^26 (A)It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant,^{[a] 27} and whoever would be first among you must be your slave,^[b]

⁴ rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, ^(A)tied it round his waist. ⁵ Then he ^(B)poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped round him.

¹⁴ If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, ^(A)you also ought to wash one another's feet.
