¹⁸ “We are going up to Jerusalem,^(A) and the Son of Man^(B) will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law.^(C) They will condemn him to death ¹⁹ and will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged^(D) and crucified.^(E) On the third day^(F) he will be raised to life!”^(G)

¹⁸ One of them, named Cleopas,^(A) asked him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”

¹⁹ “What things?” he asked.

“About Jesus of Nazareth,”^(B) they replied. “He was a prophet,^(C) powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. ²⁰ The chief priests and our rulers^(D) handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him;

²⁰ Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city,^(A) and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek.
