Feeding the Five Thousand^(A)

^13 (B)When Jesus heard it, He departed from there by boat to a deserted place by Himself. But when the multitudes heard it, they followed Him on foot from the cities. ¹⁴ And when Jesus went out He saw a great multitude; and He ^(C)was moved with compassion for them, and healed their sick. ^15 (D)When it was evening, His disciples came to Him, saying, “This is a deserted place, and the hour is already late. Send the multitudes away, that they may go into the villages and buy themselves food.”

The Compassion of Jesus^(A)

³⁵ Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, ^(B)teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease ^[a]among the people. ^36 (C)But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were ^[b]weary and scattered, ^(D)like sheep having no shepherd. ³⁷ Then He said to His disciples, ^(E)“The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few.

³³ But ^[a]the multitudes saw them departing, and many ^(A)knew Him and ran there on foot from all the cities. They arrived before them and came together to Him. ^34 (B)And Jesus, when He came out, saw a great multitude and was moved with compassion for them, because they were like ^(C)sheep not having a shepherd. So ^(D)He began to teach them many things. ^35 (E)When the day was now far spent, His disciples came to Him and said, “This is a deserted place, and already the hour is late.

¹² And when He came near the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother; and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the city was with her. ¹³ When the Lord saw her, He had ^(A)compassion on her and said to her, ^(B)“Do not weep.” ¹⁴ Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, ^(C)arise.” ¹⁵ So he who was dead ^(D)sat up and began to speak. And He ^(E)presented him to his mother.

¹⁸ I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, “Father, ^(A)I have sinned against heaven and before you, ¹⁹ and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants.” ’

²⁰ “And he arose and came to his father. But ^(B)when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him. ²¹ And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven ^(C)and in your sight, and am no longer worthy to be called your son.’

²² “But the father said to his servants, ^[a]‘Bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet.
