Jesus Heals a Centurion’s Servant(A)

When Jesus[a] returned to Capernaum, a centurion[b] came up to him and begged him repeatedly, “Sir,[c] my servant is lying at home paralyzed and in terrible pain.”

Jesus[d] told him, “I will come and heal him.”

The centurion replied, “Sir,[e] I am not worthy to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed, because I, too, am a man under authority and I have soldiers under me. I say to one of them[f] ‘Go’ and he goes, to another ‘Come’ and he comes, and to my servant ‘Do this’ and he does it.”

10 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and told those who were following him, “I tell all of you[g] with certainty, not even[h] in Israel have I found this kind of faith! 11 I tell all of you,[i] many will come from east and west and will feast with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom from[j] heaven. 12 But the unfaithful heirs[k] of that kingdom will be thrown into the darkness outside. In that place there will be wailing and gnashing of teeth.”[l]

13 “Go,” Jesus told the centurion, “and it will be done for you, just as you have believed.” And his servant was healed that very hour.

The Faith of the Centurion(A)

When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. “Lord,” he said, “my servant lies at home paralyzed,(B) suffering terribly.”

Jesus said to him, “Shall I come and heal him?”

The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed.(C) For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”

10 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.(D) 11 I say to you that many will come from the east and the west,(E) and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.(F) 12 But the subjects of the kingdom(G) will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”(H)

13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go! Let it be done just as you believed it would.”(I) And his servant was healed at that moment.

Jesus Heals an Official’s Son(A)

43 Two days later, Jesus[a] left for Galilee from there, 44 since Jesus himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country. 45 When he arrived in Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him because they had seen everything that he had done in Jerusalem during the festival and because they, too, had gone to the festival. 46 So Jesus[b] returned to Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. Meanwhile, in Capernaum there was a government official whose son was ill. 47 When this man heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and asked him repeatedly to come down and heal his son, because he was about to die.

48 Jesus told him, “Unless you people[c] see signs and wonders, you will never believe.”

49 The official told him, “Sir,[d] please come down before my little boy dies.”

50 Jesus told him, “Go home. Your son will live.” The man believed what Jesus told him and started back home.

51 While he was on his way, his servants met him and told him that his child[e] was alive. 52 So he asked them at what hour he had begun to recover, and they told him, “The fever left him yesterday at one o’clock in the afternoon.”[f]

53 Then the father realized that this was the very hour when Jesus had told him, “Your son will live.” So he himself believed, along with his whole family.

54 Now this was the second sign that Jesus did after coming from Judea to Galilee.

Jesus Heals an Official’s Son

43 After the two days(A) he left for Galilee. 44 (Now Jesus himself had pointed out that a prophet has no honor in his own country.)(B) 45 When he arrived in Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him. They had seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival,(C) for they also had been there.

46 Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine.(D) And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum. 47 When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea,(E) he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death.

48 “Unless you people see signs and wonders,”(F) Jesus told him, “you will never believe.”

49 The royal official said, “Sir, come down before my child dies.”

50 “Go,” Jesus replied, “your son will live.”

The man took Jesus at his word and departed. 51 While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living. 52 When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, “Yesterday, at one in the afternoon, the fever left him.”

53 Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” So he and his whole household(G) believed.

54 This was the second sign(H) Jesus performed after coming from Judea to Galilee.
