Eye for Eye

38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’[a](A) 39 But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.(B) 40 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. 41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.(C)

Love for Enemies

43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor[b](D) and hate your enemy.’(E) 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,(F) 45 that you may be children(G) of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.(H) 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get?(I) Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.(J)

Giving to the Needy

“Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them.(K) If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.

“So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.(L)

Prayer(M)

“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing(N) in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father,(O) who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling(P) like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.(Q) Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need(R) before you ask him.

“This, then, is how you should pray:

“‘Our Father(S) in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom(T) come,
your will be done,(U)
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.(V)
12 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.(W)
13 And lead us not into temptation,[c](X)
but deliver us from the evil one.[d](Y)

14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.(Z) 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.(AA)

Fasting

16 “When you fast,(AB) do not look somber(AC) as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18 so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.(AD)
