Matthew 27:33-61

The Crucifixion

33 (A)And when they came to a place called (B)Golgotha, which means Place of a Skull, 34 (C)they gave Him (D)wine mixed with [a]bile to drink; and after tasting it, He was unwilling to drink it.

35 And when they had crucified Him, (E)they divided His garments among themselves by casting [b]lots. 36 And sitting down, they began to (F)keep watch over Him there. 37 And above His head they put up the charge against Him [c]which read, “(G)THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

38 At that time two [d]rebels *were being crucified with Him, one on the right and one on the left. 39 And those passing by were [e]speaking abusively to Him, (H)shaking their heads, 40 and saying, “(I)You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! (J)If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.” 41 In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking Him and saying, 42 “(K)He saved others; [f]He cannot save Himself! (L)He is the King of Israel; let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in Him. 43 (M)He has trusted in God; let God rescue Him now, if He [g]takes pleasure in Him; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” 44 (N)And the [h]rebels who had been crucified with Him were also insulting Him in the same way.

45 (O)Now from the [i]sixth hour darkness [j]fell upon all the land until the [k]ninth hour. 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “(P)Eli, Eli, lema sabaktanei?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” 47 And some of those who were standing there, when they heard it, said, “This man is calling for Elijah.” 48 And (Q)immediately one of them ran, and taking a sponge, he filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink. 49 But the rest of them said, “[l]Let us see if Elijah comes to save Him[m].” 50 And Jesus (R)cried out again with a loud voice, and gave up His spirit. 51 (S)And behold, (T)the [n]veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and (U)the earth shook and the rocks were split. 52 Also the tombs were opened, and many bodies of the [o]saints who had (V)fallen asleep were raised; 53 and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection, they entered (W)the holy city and appeared to many. 54 (X)Now as for the centurion and those who were with him (Y)keeping guard over Jesus, when they saw (Z)the earthquake and the other things that were happening, they became extremely frightened and said, “Truly this was [p](AA)the Son of God!”

55 (AB)And many women were there watching from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee while (AC)caring for Him. 56 Among them were (AD)Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and (AE)the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

Jesus Is Buried

57 (AF)Now when it was evening, a rich man from Arimathea came, named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus. 58 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. 59 And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut out in the rock; and he rolled (AG)a large stone against the entrance of the tomb and went away. 61 And (AH)Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting opposite the tomb.

Matthew 27:33-61
New International Version

33 They came to a place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”).(A) 34 There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall;(B) but after tasting it, he refused to drink it. 35 When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots.(C) 36 And sitting down, they kept watch(D) over him there. 37 Above his head they placed the written charge against him: this is jesus, the king of the jews.

38 Two rebels were crucified with him,(E) one on his right and one on his left. 39 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads(F) 40 and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,(G) save yourself!(H) Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!”(I) 41 In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. 42 “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the king of Israel!(J) Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe(K) in him. 43 He trusts in God. Let God rescue him(L) now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” 44 In the same way the rebels who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

The Death of Jesus(M)

45 From noon until three in the afternoon darkness(N) came over all the land. 46 About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli,[a] lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).[b](O)

47 When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He’s calling Elijah.”

48 Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar,(P) put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. 49 The rest said, “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.”

50 And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.(Q)

51 At that moment the curtain of the temple(R) was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split(S) 52 and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. 53 They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and[c] went into the holy city(T) and appeared to many people.

54 When the centurion and those with him who were guarding(U) Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!”(V)

55 Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to care for his needs.(W) 56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph,[d] and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.(X)

The Burial of Jesus(Y)

57 As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. 58 Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. 59 Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 and placed it in his own new tomb(Z) that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away. 61 Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there opposite the tomb.

Jesus Is Buried

42 (X)When evening had already come, since it was (Y)the preparation day, that is, the day before the Sabbath, 43 Joseph of Arimathea came, a (Z)prominent member of the Council, who was himself also (AA)waiting for the kingdom of God; and he (AB)gathered up courage and went in before Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus. 44 Now Pilate wondered if He was dead by this time, and summoning the centurion, he questioned him as to whether He was already dead. 45 And after learning this from (AC)the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph. 46 Joseph bought a linen cloth, took Him down, wrapped Him in the linen cloth, and laid Him in a tomb which had been cut out in the rock; and he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. 47 (AD)Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were watching to see where He was laid.

25 It was nine in the morning when they crucified him. 26 The written notice of the charge against him read: the king of the jews.(C)

27 They crucified two rebels with him, one on his right and one on his left. [28] [a] 29 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads(D) and saying, “So! 40 Some women were watching from a distance.(Q) Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joseph,[d] and Salome.(R) 41 In Galilee these women had followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there.(S)

50 (V)And a man named Joseph, who was a (W)member of the Council, a good and righteous man 51 (he had not consented to their plan and action), a man from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who was (X)waiting for the kingdom of God— 52 this man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 53 And he took it down and wrapped it in a linen cloth, and laid Him in a tomb cut into the rock, where no one had ever lain. 54 It was a [n](Y)preparation day, and a Sabbath was about to [o]begin. 55 Now (Z)the women who had come with Him from Galilee followed, and they saw the tomb and how His body was laid. 56 And then they returned and (AA)prepared spices and perfumes.

33 When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. 34 Jesus said, “Father,(A) forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”[a](B) And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.(C)

35 The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him.(D) They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.”(E)

44 It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon,(O) 45 for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple(P) was torn in two.(Q) 46 Jesus called out with a loud voice,(R) “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”[c](S) When he had said this, he breathed his last.(T)

47 The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God(U) and said, “Surely this was a righteous man.” 48 When all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place, they beat their breasts(V) and went away. 49 But all those who knew him, including the women who had followed him from Galilee,(W) stood at a distance,(X) watching these things.

50 Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the Council, a good and upright man, 51 who had not consented to their decision and action. He came from the Judean town of Arimathea, and he himself was waiting for the kingdom of God.(Z) 52 Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body. 53 Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen cloth and placed it in a tomb cut in the rock, one in which no one had yet been laid. 54 It was Preparation Day,(AA) and the Sabbath was about to begin.

The Crucifixion

16 So he then (A)handed Him over to them to be crucified.

17 (B)They took Jesus, therefore, and He went out, [a](C)carrying His own cross, to the place called (D)the Place of a Skull, which (E)in [b]Hebrew is called, Golgotha. 18 There they crucified Him, and with Him (F)two other men, one on either side, and Jesus in between. 19 Now Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It was written: “(G)JESUS THE NAZARENE, (H)THE KING OF THE JEWS.” 20 Therefore many of the Jews read this inscription, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written (I)in [c]Hebrew, Latin, and in Greek. 21 So the chief priests of the Jews were saying to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘(J)The King of the Jews’; rather, write that He said, ‘I am (K)King of the Jews.’” 22 Pilate answered, “(L)What I have written, I have written.”

23 Then (M)the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His outer garments and made (N)four parts: a part to each soldier, and the [d]tunic also; but the tunic was seamless, woven [e]in one piece. 24 So they said to one another, “(O)Let’s not tear it, but cast lots for it, to decide whose it shall be.” (P)This happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled: “They (Q)divided My garments among themselves, and they cast [f]lots for My clothing.” Therefore the soldiers did these things.

25 (R)Now beside the cross of Jesus stood (S)His mother, His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and (T)Mary Magdalene. 26 So when Jesus saw His mother, and (U)the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He *said to His mother, “(V)Woman, behold, your son!” 27 Then He *said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her into (W)his own household.

28 After this, Jesus, (X)knowing that all things had already been accomplished, (Y)in order that the Scripture would be fulfilled, *said, “(Z)I am thirsty.” 29 A jar full of sour wine was standing there; so (AA)they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth. 30 Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “(AB)It is finished!” And He bowed His head and (AC)gave up His spirit.

Care of the Body of Jesus

31 Now then, since it was (AD)the day of preparation, to prevent (AE)the bodies from remaining on the cross on the Sabbath ([g]for that Sabbath was a (AF)high day), the Jews requested of Pilate that their legs be broken, and the bodies be taken away. 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man, and of the other who was (AG)crucified with Him; 33 but after they came to Jesus, when they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. 34 Yet one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately (AH)blood and water came out. 35 And he who has seen has (AI)testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe. 36 For these things took place (AJ)so that the Scripture would be fulfilled: “(AK)Not a bone of Him shall be [h]broken.” 37 And again another Scripture says, “(AL)They will look at Him whom they pierced.”

38 Now (AM)after these things Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but a (AN)secret one for (AO)fear of the [i]Jews, requested of Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate granted permission. So he came and took away His body. 39 (AP)Nicodemus, who had first come to Him by night, also came, (AQ)bringing a [j]mixture of (AR)myrrh and aloes, about a [k](AS)hundred litras weight. 40 So they took the body of Jesus and (AT)bound it in (AU)linen wrappings with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. 41 Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden was a (AV)new tomb (AW)in which no one had yet been laid. 42 Therefore because of the Jewish day of (AX)preparation, since the tomb was (AY)nearby, they laid Jesus there.

John 19:16-42

16 Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.(A)

The Crucifixion of Jesus(B)

So the soldiers took charge of Jesus. 17 Carrying his own cross,(C) he went out to the place of the Skull(D) (which in Aramaic(E) is called Golgotha). 18 There they crucified him, and with him two others(F)—one on each side and Jesus in the middle.

19 Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: jesus of nazareth,(G) the king of the jews.(H) 20 Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city,(I) and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek. 21 The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, “Do not write ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews.”(J)

22 Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

23 When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.

24 “Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get it.”

This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled(K) that said,

“They divided my clothes among them
    and cast lots for my garment.”[a](L)

So this is what the soldiers did.

25 Near the cross(M) of Jesus stood his mother,(N) his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.(O) 26 When Jesus saw his mother(P) there, and the disciple whom he loved(Q) standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman,[b] here is your son,” 27 and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.

The Death of Jesus(R)

28 Later, knowing that everything had now been finished,(S) and so that Scripture would be fulfilled,(T) Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” 29 A jar of wine vinegar(U) was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. 30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.”(V) With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

31 Now it was the day of Preparation,(W) and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses(X) during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. 32 The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other.(Y) 33 But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 Instead, one of the soldiers pierced(Z) Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.(AA) 35 The man who saw it(AB) has given testimony, and his testimony is true.(AC) He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe. 36 These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled:(AD) “Not one of his bones will be broken,”[c](AE) 37 and, as another scripture says, “They will look on the one they have pierced.”[d](AF)

The Burial of Jesus(AG)

38 Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders.(AH) With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away. 39 He was accompanied by Nicodemus,(AI) the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds.[e] 40 Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen.(AJ) This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs.(AK) 41 At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid. 42 Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation(AL) and since the tomb was nearby,(AM) they laid Jesus there.
