Jesus’ genealogy

The book of the family tree of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

Abraham became the father of Isaac, Isaac of Jacob, Jacob of Judah and his brothers, Judah of Peres and Zara (by Tamar), Peres of Esrom, Esrom of Aram, Aram of Aminadab, Aminadab of Naason, Naason of Salmon, Salmon of Boaz (by Rahab), Boaz of Obed (by Ruth), Obed of Jesse, and Jesse of David the king.

David was the father of Solomon (by the wife of Uriah), Solomon of Rehoboam, Rehoboam of Abijah, Abijah of Asaph, Asaph of Jehosaphat, Jehosaphat of Joram, Joram of Uzziah, Uzziah of Joatham, Joatham of Ahaz, Ahaz of Hezekiah, 10 Hezekiah of Manasseh, Manasseh of Amoz, Amoz of Josiah, 11 Josiah of Jeconiah and his brothers, at the time of the exile in Babylon.

12 After the Babylonian exile, Jeconiah became the father of Salathiel, Salathiel of Zerubbabel, 13 Zerubbabel of Abioud, Abioud of Eliakim, Eliakim of Azor, 14 Azor of Sadok, Sadok of Achim, Achim of Elioud, 15 Elioud of Eleazar, Eleazar of Matthan, Matthan of Jacob, 16 and Jacob of Joseph the husband of Mary, from whom was born Jesus, who is called “Messiah.”

17 So all the generations from Abraham to David add up to fourteen; from David to the Babylonian exile, fourteen generations; and from the Babylonian exile to the Messiah, fourteen generations.

The birth of Jesus

18 This was how the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place. His mother, Mary, was engaged to Joseph; but before they came together she turned out to be pregnant—by the holy spirit. 19 Joseph, her husband-to-be, was an upright man. He didn’t want to make a public example of her. So he decided to set the marriage aside privately. 20 But, while he was considering this, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared to him in a dream.

“Joseph, son of David,” said the angel, “don’t be afraid to get married to Mary. The child she is carrying is from the holy spirit. 21 She is going to have a son. You are to give him the name Jesus; he is the one who will save his people from their sins.”

22 All this happened so that what the Lord said through the prophet might be fulfilled: 23 “Look: the virgin is pregnant, and will have a son, and they shall give him the name Emmanuel,”—which means, in translation, “God with us.”

24 When Joseph woke up from his sleep he did what the Lord’s angel had told him to. He married his wife, 25 but he didn’t have sexual relations with her until after the birth of her son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

Joseph Accepts Jesus as His Son

18 This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about[d]: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.(S) 19 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet[e] did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce(T) her quietly.

20 But after he had considered this, an angel(U) of the Lord appeared to him in a dream(V) and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,[f](W) because he will save his people from their sins.”(X)

22 All this took place to fulfill(Y) what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”[g](Z) (which means “God with us”).

24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel(AA) of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. 25 But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.(AB)
