Birth of Jesus Foretold

²⁶ In the sixth month the angel ^(A)Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named ^(B)Nazareth, ^27 (C)to a virgin betrothed^[a] to a man whose name was Joseph, ^(D)of the house of David. And the virgin's name was Mary. ²⁸ And he came to her and said, “Greetings, ^(E)O favored one, ^(F)the Lord is with you!”^{[b] 29} But ^(G)she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. ³⁰ And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for ^(H)you have found favor with God. ³¹ And behold, ^(I)you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and ^(J)you shall call his name Jesus. ³² He will be great and will be called the Son of ^(K)the Most High. And the Lord God ^(L)will give to him the throne of ^(M)his father David, ³³ and he will reign over the house of Jacob ^(N)forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”

³⁴ And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?”^[c]

³⁵ And the angel answered her, ^(O)“The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of ^(P)the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born^[d] will be called ^(Q)holy—^(R)the Son of God.

The Word Became Flesh

1 ^(A)In the beginning was ^(B)the Word, and ^(C)the Word was with God, and ^(D)the Word was God. ² He was in the beginning with God. ^3 (E)All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. ^4 (F)In him was life,^[a] and ^(G)the life was the light of men.

¹¹ He came to ^(A)his own,^[a] and ^(B)his own people^{[b] (C)}did not receive him. ¹² But to all who did receive him, ^(D)who believed in his name, ^(E)he gave the right ^(F)to become ^(G)children of God, ¹³ who ^(H)were born, ^(I)not of blood ^(J)nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

¹⁴ And ^(K)the Word ^(L)became flesh and ^(M)dwelt among us, ^(N)and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son^[c] from the Father, full of ^(O)grace and ^(P)truth.

¹⁵ For we do not have a high priest ^(A)who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been ^(B)tempted as we are, ^(C)yet without sin.

²¹ For ^(A)to this you have been called, ^(B)because Christ also suffered for you, ^(C)leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. ^22 (D)He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. ^23 (E)When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, ^(F)but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. ^24 (G)He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we ^(H)might die to sin and ^(I)live to righteousness. ^(J)By his wounds you have been healed.

⁸ but ^(A)God shows his love for us in that ^(B)while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

¹⁸ For Christ also ^(A)suffered^{[a] (B)}once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, ^(C)that he might bring us to God, being put to death ^(D)in the flesh but made alive ^(E)in the spirit,

³ For ^(A)I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died ^(B)for our sins ^(C)in accordance with the Scriptures, ⁴ that he was buried, that he was raised ^(D)on the third day ^(E)in accordance with the Scriptures,
