^11 (A)“I baptize you with water ^(B)for repentance, but ^(C)he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you ^(D)with the Holy Spirit and ^(E)fire.

⁴ when ^(A)the Lord shall have washed away the filth of ^(B)the daughters of Zion and cleansed the bloodstains of Jerusalem from its midst by a spirit of judgment and by ^(C)a spirit of burning.^[a]

^16 (A)John answered them all, saying, “I baptize you with water, but ^(B)he who is mightier than I is coming, ^(C)the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you ^(D)with the Holy Spirit and ^(E)fire.

⁵ for ^(A)John baptized with water, ^(B)but you will be baptized ^(C)with^[a] the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

² And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like ^(A)a mighty rushing wind, and ^(B)it filled the entire house where they were sitting. ³ And divided tongues ^(C)as of fire appeared to them and rested^[a] on each one of them. ⁴ And they were all ^(D)filled with the Holy Spirit and began ^(E)to speak in other tongues ^(F)as the Spirit gave them utterance.

² But ^(A)who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For ^(B)he is like a refiner's fire and like fullers' soap. ³ He will sit ^(C)as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, and they will bring ^(D)offerings in righteousness to the Lord.^{[a] 4 (E)}Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lord as in the days of old and as in former years.

⁵ he saved us, ^(A)not because of works done by us in righteousness, but ^(B)according to his own mercy, by ^(C)the washing of regeneration and ^(D)renewal of the Holy Spirit,

⁷ And he preached, saying, ^(A)“After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. ^8 (B)I have baptized you with water, but ^(C)he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
