³⁸ Two rebels were crucified with him,^(A) one on his right and one on his left.

¹⁸ There they crucified him, and with him two others^(A)—one on each side and Jesus in the middle.

³¹ Now it was the day of Preparation,^(A) and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses^(B) during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. ³² The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other.^{(C) 33} But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. ³⁴ Instead, one of the soldiers pierced^(D) Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.^{(E) 35} The man who saw it^(F) has given testimony, and his testimony is true.^(G) He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe.

³⁹ One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”^(A)

⁴⁰ But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? ⁴¹ We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”^(B)

⁴² Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.^[a]”^(C)

⁴³ Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”^(D)

³² Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed.^{(A) 33} When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left.

²⁷ They crucified two rebels with him, one on his right and one on his left.

⁴⁴ In the same way the rebels who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

³⁷ It is written: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors’^[a];^(A) and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment.”
