⁵⁶ But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.”^(A) Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.

The Shepherd Struck, the Sheep Scattered

³² “A time is coming^(A) and in fact has come when you will be scattered,^(B) each to your own home. You will leave me all alone.^(C) Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.^(D)

⁵⁴ But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled^(A) that say it must happen in this way?”

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial^(A)

³¹ Then Jesus told them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of me,^(B) for it is written:

¹⁶ and said, “Brothers and sisters,^[a](A) the Scripture had to be fulfilled^(B) in which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through David concerning Judas,^(C) who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus.

Peter’s First Denial^(A)

¹⁵ Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest,^(B) he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard,^{(C) 16} but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the servant girl on duty there and brought Peter in.

⁵⁰ Then everyone deserted him and fled.^(A)

⁵¹ A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him, ⁵² he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.

¹⁶ At my first defense, no one came to my support, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them.^(A)
