³⁵ Peter said to him, “Even though I must die with you, I will not deny you.” And so said all the disciples.^(A)

³⁷ Peter said to him, “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”^(A)

¹⁷ If you invoke as Father the one who judges impartially according to each person’s work, live in fear during the time of your exile.^(A)

Shining as Lights in the World

¹² Therefore, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed me, not only in my presence but much more now in my absence, work on your own salvation with fear and trembling,^(A)

¹² So if you think you are standing, watch out that you do not fall.

²⁰ That is true. They were broken off on account of unbelief,^[a] but you stand on account of belief.^[b] So do not become arrogant, but be afraid.^(A)

²² But Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?”^[a] They said to him, “We are able.”^{(A) 23} He said to them, “You will indeed drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left, this is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.”^(B)

²⁴ When the ten heard it, they were angry with the two brothers.^(C)

⁸ The people all answered as one, “Everything that the Lord has spoken we will do.” Moses reported the words of the people to the Lord.^(A)
