¹⁶ “Woe to you, blind guides who say, ‘Whoever swears by the sanctuary is bound by nothing, but whoever swears by the gold of the sanctuary is bound by the oath.’^(A)

¹⁴ Let them alone; they are blind guides of the blind.^[a] And if one blind person guides another, both will fall into a pit.”^(A)

¹² Above all, brothers and sisters, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your “Yes” be yes and your “No” be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation.^[a]

²⁴ You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel!

¹⁷ You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the sanctuary that has made the gold sacred?^(A)

Concerning Oaths

³³ “Again, you have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but carry out the vows you have made to the Lord.’^{(A) 34} But I say to you: Do not swear at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God,^{(B) 35} or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.

³⁹ Jesus said, “I came into this world for judgment, so that those who do not see may see and those who do see may become blind.”^{(A) 40} Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard this and said to him, “Surely we are not blind, are we?”^{(B) 41} Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would not have sin. But now that you say, ‘We see,’ your sin remains.^(C)

²⁶ You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and of the plate,^[a] so that the outside also may become clean.

¹⁹ How blind you are! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred?^(A)

⁵ But you say that whoever tells father or mother, ‘Whatever support you might have had from me is given to God,’^[a] then that person need not honor the father.^{[b](A) 6} So, for the sake of your tradition, you nullify the word^[c] of God.
