¹⁶ “Woe to you, ^(A)blind guides, who say, ^(B)‘Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple, he is obliged to perform it.’

¹⁴ Let them alone. ^(A)They are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a ditch.”

¹² But above all, my brethren, ^(A)do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath. But let your “Yes” be “Yes,” and your “No,” “No,” lest you fall into ^[a]judgment.

²⁴ Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!

¹⁷ Fools and blind! For which is greater, the gold ^(A)or the temple that ^[a]sanctifies the gold?

Jesus Forbids Oaths

³³ “Again you have heard that ^(A)it was said to those of ^[a]old, ^(B)‘You shall not swear falsely, but ^(C)shall perform your oaths to the Lord.’ ³⁴ But I say to you, ^(D)do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is ^(E)God’s throne; ³⁵ nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of ^(F)the great King.

³⁹ And Jesus said, ^(A)“For judgment I have come into this world, ^(B)that those who do not see may see, and that those who see may be made blind.”

⁴⁰ Then some of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these words, ^(C)and said to Him, “Are we blind also?”

⁴¹ Jesus said to them, ^(D)“If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you say, ‘We see.’ Therefore your sin remains.

²⁶ Blind Pharisee, first cleanse the inside of the cup and dish, that the outside of them may be clean also.
