¹⁶ “Woe to you, blind guides!^(A) You say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gold of the temple is bound by that oath.’^(B)

¹⁴ Leave them; they are blind guides.^[a](A) If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.”^(B)

¹² Above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear—not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. All you need to say is a simple “Yes” or “No.” Otherwise you will be condemned.^(A)

²⁴ You blind guides!^(A) You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.

¹⁷ You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred?^(A)

Oaths

³³ “Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath,^(A) but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.’^{(B) 34} But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all:^(C) either by heaven, for it is God’s throne;^{(D) 35} or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King.^(E)

³⁹ Jesus said,^[a] “For judgment^(A) I have come into this world,^(B) so that the blind will see^(C) and those who see will become blind.”^(D)

⁴⁰ Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, “What? Are we blind too?”^(E)

⁴¹ Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.^(F)

²⁶ Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.

¹⁹ You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred?^(A)
