¹⁶ “Woe to ^(A)you, ^(B)blind guides, who say, ^(C)‘If anyone swears by the temple, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.’

¹⁴ Let them alone; ^(A)they are blind guides.^[a] And ^(B)if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.”

¹² But above all, my brothers, ^(A)do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation.

²⁴ You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing ^(A)a camel!

¹⁷ You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or ^(A)the temple that has made the gold sacred?

Oaths

³³ “Again ^(A)you have heard that it was said to those of old, ^(B)‘You shall not swear falsely, but ^(C)shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’ ³⁴ But I say to you, ^(D)Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for ^(E)it is the throne of God, ³⁵ or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is ^(F)the city of the great King.

³⁹ Jesus said, ^(A)“For judgment I came into this world, ^(B)that those who do not see may see, and ^(C)those who see may become blind.” ⁴⁰ Some of the Pharisees near him heard these things, and said to him, ^(D)“Are we also blind?” ⁴¹ Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, ^(E)you would have no guilt;^[a] but now that you say, ‘We see,’ your guilt remains.

²⁶ You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of ^(A)the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean.

¹⁹ You blind men! For which is greater, the gift or ^(A)the altar that makes the gift sacred?
