²⁶ It will not be so among you, but whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant,^(A)

⁴³ But it is not so among you; instead, whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant,^(A)

⁴⁵ For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve and to give his life a ransom for many.”^(A)

³⁵ He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, “Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all.”^(A)

³ Do not lord it over those in your charge, but be examples to the flock.^(A)

¹⁴ I tell you, this man went down to his home justified rather than the other, for all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted.”^(A)

¹¹ Whoever speaks must do so as one speaking the very words of God; whoever serves must do so with the strength that God supplies, so that God may be glorified in all things through Jesus Christ. To him belong the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen.^(A)

Humility and Hospitality

⁷ When he noticed how the guests chose the places of honor, he told them a parable.^{(A) 8} “When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not sit down at the place of honor, in case someone more distinguished than you has been invited by your host,^{(B) 9} and the host who invited both of you may come and say to you, ‘Give this person your place,’ and then in disgrace you would start to take the lowest place. ¹⁰ But when you are invited, go and sit down at the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he may say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher’; then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at the table with you.^{(C) 11} For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”^(D)

⁴⁴ Then they also will answer, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison and did not take care of you?’

⁸ But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all brothers and sisters.^{(A) 9} And call no one your father on earth, for you have one Father, the one in heaven.^{(B) 10} Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one instructor, the Messiah.^{[a] 11} The greatest among you will be your servant.^{(C) 12} All who exalt themselves will be humbled, and all who humble themselves will be exalted.^(D)
