¹² saying, ‘These last men have worked only one hour, and you made them equal to us who have borne the burden and the heat of the day.’

^5 (A)Even so then, at this present time there is a remnant according to the election of grace. ⁶ And ^(B)if by grace, then it is no longer of works; otherwise grace is no longer grace. ^[a]But if it is of works, it is no longer grace; otherwise work is no longer work.

²³ Are they ministers of Christ?—I speak as a fool—I am more: ^(A)in labors more abundant, ^(B)in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequently, ^(C)in deaths often. ²⁴ From the Jews five times I received ^(D)forty ^(E)stripes minus one. ²⁵ Three times I was ^(F)beaten with rods; ^(G)once I was stoned; three times I ^(H)was shipwrecked; a night and a day I have been in the deep; ²⁶ in journeys often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, ^(I)in perils of my own countrymen, ^(J)in perils of the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; ²⁷ in weariness and toil, ^(K)in sleeplessness often, ^(L)in hunger and thirst, in ^(M)fastings often, in cold and nakedness— ²⁸ besides the other things, what comes upon me daily: ^(N)my deep concern for all the churches.

^10 (A)But when you are invited, go and sit down in the lowest place, so that when he who invited you comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, go up higher.’ Then you will have glory in the presence of those who sit at the table with you. ^11 (B)For whoever exalts himself will be ^[a]humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

⁵⁵ And when you see the ^(A)south wind blow, you say, ‘There will be hot weather’; and there is.

¹¹ For no sooner has the sun risen with a burning heat than it withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beautiful appearance perishes. So the rich man also will fade away in his pursuits.

⁶ that the Gentiles ^(A)should be fellow heirs, of the same body, and partakers of His promise in Christ through the gospel,

¹¹ To the present hour we both hunger and thirst, and we are poorly clothed, and beaten, and homeless.

Israel Needs the Gospel

10 Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for ^[a]Israel is that they may be saved. ² For I bear them witness ^(A)that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. ³ For they being ignorant of ^(B)God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own ^(C)righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God.
