⁴ and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah^[a] was to be born.

⁹ Then a great clamor arose, and certain scribes of the Pharisees’ group stood up and contended, “We find nothing wrong with this man. What if a spirit or an angel has spoken to him?”^(A)

¹² They stirred up the people as well as the elders and the scribes; then they suddenly confronted him, seized him, and brought him before the council.

Officers Are Sent to Arrest Jesus

³² The Pharisees heard the crowd muttering such things about him, and the chief priests and Pharisees sent temple police to arrest him.

¹⁰ Jesus answered him, “Are you the teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things?

¹⁰ The chief priests and the scribes stood by vehemently accusing him.

¹⁹ When the scribes and chief priests realized that he had told this parable against them, they wanted to lay hands on him at that very hour, but they feared the people.^(A)
