¹⁰ And the disciples asked him, “Why, then, do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”^(A)

⁵ See, I will send you the prophet Elijah before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes.^{(A) 6} He will turn the hearts of parents to their children and the hearts of children to their parents, so that I will not come and strike the land with a curse.^[a]

¹⁴ and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is to come.^(A)

²¹ And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the prophet?” He answered, “No.”^(A)

¹¹ Then they asked him, “Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”

²⁵ They asked him, “Why, then, are you baptizing if you are neither the Messiah,^[a] nor Elijah, nor the prophet?”

³ Suddenly there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. ⁴ Then Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I^[a] will set up three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”

⁴⁷ When some of the bystanders heard it, they said, “This man is calling for Elijah.” ⁴⁸ At once one of them ran and got a sponge, filled it with sour wine, put it on a stick, and gave it to him to drink.^{(A) 49} But the others said, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him.”^[a]
