¹⁰ And the disciples asked him, “Then why do the scribes say ^(A)that first Elijah must come?”

^5 (A)“Behold, I will send you ^(B)Elijah the prophet ^(C)before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. ⁶ And he will ^(D)turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and ^(E)strike the land with a decree of utter destruction.”^[a]

¹⁴ and if you are willing to accept it, he is ^(A)Elijah who is to come.

²¹ And they asked him, “What then? ^(A)Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you ^(B)the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.”

¹¹ And they asked him, “Why do the scribes say ^(A)that first Elijah must come?”

²⁵ They asked him, ^(A)“Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”

³ And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. ⁴ And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for ^(A)Elijah.”

⁴⁷ And some of the bystanders, hearing it, said, “This man is calling Elijah.” ⁴⁸ And one of them at once ran and took a sponge, filled it with ^(A)sour wine, and put it on a reed and ^(B)gave it to him to drink. ⁴⁹ But the others said, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him.”
