The Sign of Jonah

³⁸ Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying, “Teacher, ^(A)we wish to see a sign from you.”

²² For ^(A)Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom,

The Pharisees Demand a Sign

^11 (A)The Pharisees came and began to argue with him, ^(B)seeking from him ^(C)a sign from heaven ^(D)to test him. ¹² And ^(E)he sighed deeply ^(F)in his spirit and said, “Why does this generation seek a sign? Truly, I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation.”

¹⁸ So the Jews said to him, ^(A)“What sign do you show us for doing these things?”

¹⁶ while others, ^(A)to test him, kept seeking from him a sign from heaven.

⁴⁸ So Jesus said to him, ^(A)“Unless you^[a] see signs and wonders you will not believe.”

The Sign of Jonah

^29 (A)When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, ^(B)“This generation is an evil generation. ^(C)It seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.

³⁰ So they said to him, ^(A)“Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform?

The Pharisees and Sadducees Demand Signs

16 ^(A)And the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and ^(B)to test him ^(C)they asked him to show them ^(D)a sign from heaven. ² He answered them,^{[a] (E)}“When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ ³ And in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ ^(F)You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret ^(G)the signs of the times. ^4 (H)An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” So ^(I)he left them and departed.
