²³ And you, ^(A)Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You will be brought down to ^(B)Hades. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.

¹³ And leaving ^(A)Nazareth he went and lived in ^(B)Capernaum by ^(C)the sea, in the territory of ^(D)Zebulun and Naphtali,

Jesus Heals an Official's Son

⁴⁶ So he came again to ^(A)Cana in Galilee, ^(B)where he had made the water wine. And at Capernaum there was an official whose son was ill. ⁴⁷ When this man heard that Jesus ^(C)had come from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death. ⁴⁸ So Jesus said to him, ^(D)“Unless you^[a] see signs and wonders you will not believe.” ⁴⁹ The official said to him, “Sir, come down ^(E)before my child dies.” ⁵⁰ Jesus said to him, “Go; your son will live.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went on his way. ⁵¹ As he was going down, his servants^[b] met him and told him that his son was recovering. ⁵² So he asked them the hour when he began to get better, and they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour^[c] the fever left him.” ⁵³ The father knew that was the hour when Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” And he himself believed, ^(F)and all his household. ^54 (G)This was now the second sign that Jesus did when he had come from Judea to Galilee.

⁸ and their dead bodies will lie in the street of the great city that symbolically^[a] is called ^(A)Sodom and ^(B)Egypt, where their Lord was crucified.

⁷ just as ^(A)Sodom and Gomorrah and ^(B)the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and ^(C)pursued unnatural desire,^[a] serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.

⁴ For if God did not spare ^(A)angels when they sinned, but ^(B)cast them into hell^[a] and committed them to chains^[b] of gloomy darkness ^(C)to be kept until the judgment; ⁵ if he did not spare the ancient world, but ^(D)preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought ^(E)a flood upon the world of the ungodly; ⁶ if by ^(F)turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes he condemned them to extinction, ^(G)making them an example of ^(H)what is going to happen to the ungodly;^{[c] 7} and ^(I)if he rescued righteous Lot, greatly distressed by the sensual conduct of the wicked ⁸ (for as that righteous man lived among them day after day, ^(J)he was tormenting his righteous soul over their lawless deeds that he saw and heard); ⁹ then ^(K)the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials,^[d] and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment,

¹¹ For ^(A)everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
