^9 (A)Provide neither gold nor silver nor ^(B)copper in your money belts,

Supplies for the Road

^35 (A)And He said to them, “When I sent you without money bag, knapsack, and sandals, did you lack anything?”

So they said, “Nothing.”

^3 (A)And He said to them, “Take nothing for the journey, neither staffs nor bag nor bread nor money; and do not have two tunics apiece.

^4 (B)“Whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart. ^5 (C)And whoever will not receive you, when you go out of that city, ^(D)shake off the very dust from your feet as a testimony against them.”

⁷ Who ever ^(A)goes to war at his own expense? Who ^(B)plants a vineyard and does not eat of its fruit? Or who ^(C)tends a flock and does not drink of the milk of the flock?

⁸ Do I say these things as a mere man? Or does not the law say the same also? ⁹ For it is written in the law of Moses, ^(D)“You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain.” Is it oxen God is concerned about? ¹⁰ Or does He say it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written, that ^(E)he who plows should plow in hope, and he who threshes in hope should be partaker of his hope. ^11 (F)If we have sown spiritual things for you, is it a great thing if we reap your material things? ¹² If others are partakers of this right over you, are we not even more?

^(G)Nevertheless we have not used this right, but endure all things ^(H)lest we hinder the gospel of Christ. ^13 (I)Do you not know that those who minister the holy things eat of the things of the ^(J)temple, and those who serve at the altar partake of the offerings of the altar? ¹⁴ Even so ^(K)the Lord has commanded ^(L)that those who preach the gospel should live from the gospel.

¹⁵ But ^(M)I have used none of these things, nor have I written these things that it should be done so to me; for ^(N)it would be better for me to die than that anyone should make my boasting void. ¹⁶ For if I preach the gospel, I have nothing to boast of, for ^(O)necessity is laid upon me; yes, woe is me if I do not preach the gospel! ¹⁷ For if I do this willingly, ^(P)I have a reward; but if against my will, ^(Q)I have been entrusted with a stewardship. ¹⁸ What is my reward then? That ^(R)when I preach the gospel, I may present the gospel ^[a]of Christ without charge, that I ^(S)may not abuse my authority in the gospel.

Serving All Men

¹⁹ For though I am ^(T)free from all men, ^(U)I have made myself a servant to all, ^(V)that I might win the more; ²⁰ and ^(W)to the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might win Jews; to those who are under the law, as under the ^[b]law, that I might win those who are under the law; ^21 (X)to ^(Y)those who are without law, as without law ^(Z)(not being without ^[c]law toward God, but under ^[d]law toward Christ), that I might win those who are without law; ^22 (AA)to the weak I became ^[e]as weak, that I might win the weak. ^(AB)I have become all things to all men, ^(AC)that I might by all means save some. ²³ Now this I do for the gospel’s sake, that I may be partaker of it with you.

Striving for a Crown

²⁴ Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? ^(AD)Run in such a way that you may ^[f]obtain it. ²⁵ And everyone who competes for the prize ^[g]is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for ^(AE)an imperishable crown. ²⁶ Therefore I run thus: ^(AF)not with uncertainty. Thus I fight: not as one who beats the air. ^27 (AG)But I discipline my body and ^(AH)bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become ^(AI)disqualified.

^4 (A)Carry neither money bag, knapsack, nor sandals; and ^(B)greet no one along the road. ^5 (C)But whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ ⁶ And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest on it; if not, it will return to you. ^7 (D)And remain in the same house, ^(E)eating and drinking such things as they give, for ^(F)the laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not go from house to house. ⁸ Whatever city you enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you. ^9 (G)And heal the sick there, and say to them, ^(H)‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ ¹⁰ But whatever city you enter, and they do not receive you, go out into its streets and say, ^11 (I)‘The very dust of your city which clings to ^[a]us we wipe off against you. Nevertheless know this, that the kingdom of God has come near you.’ ^12 [b]But I say to you that ^(J)it will be more tolerable in that Day for Sodom than for that city.

⁸ He commanded them to take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bag, no bread, no copper in their money belts— ⁹ but ^(A)to wear sandals, and not to put on two tunics.

^10 (B)Also He said to them, “In whatever place you enter a house, stay there till you depart from that place. ^11 (C)And ^[a]whoever will not receive you nor hear you, when you depart from there, ^(D)shake off the dust under your feet as a testimony against them. ^[b]Assuredly, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city!”
