Scripture Must Be Fulfilled in Jesus

35 And he said to them, (A)“When I sent you out with no moneybag or knapsack or sandals, did you lack anything?” They said, “Nothing.”

(A)And he said to them, “Take nothing for your journey, (B)no staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money; and do not have two tunics.[a] And whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart. And wherever they do not receive you, when you leave that town (C)shake off the dust from your feet (D)as a testimony (E)against them.”

  1. Luke 9:3 Greek chiton, a long garment worn under the cloak next to the skin

(A)Who serves as a soldier at his own expense? (B)Who plants a vineyard without eating any of its fruit? Or who tends a flock without getting some of the milk?

Do I say these things on human authority? Does not the Law say the same? For it is written in the Law of Moses, (C)“You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain.” Is it for oxen that God is concerned? 10 Does he not certainly speak for our sake? It was written (D)for our sake, because (E)the plowman should plow in hope and the thresher thresh in hope of sharing in the crop. 11 (F)If we have sown spiritual things among you, is it too much if we reap material things from you? 12 If others share this rightful claim on you, do not we even more?

Nevertheless, (G)we have not made use of this right, but we endure anything (H)rather than put an obstacle in the way of the gospel of Christ. 13 Do you not know that (I)those who are employed in the temple service get their food from the temple, and those who serve at the altar share in the sacrificial offerings? 14 In the same way, the Lord commanded that (J)those who proclaim the gospel should get their living by the gospel.

15 But (K)I have made no use of any of these rights, nor am I writing these things to secure any such provision. For I would rather die than have anyone (L)deprive me of my ground for boasting. 16 For if I preach the gospel, that gives me no ground for boasting. For (M)necessity is laid upon me. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! 17 For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward, but if not of my own will, I am still entrusted with (N)a stewardship. 18 What then is my reward? That in my preaching (O)I may present the gospel free of charge, so as not to make full use of my right in the gospel.

19 For (P)though I am free from all, (Q)I have made myself a servant to all, that I might (R)win more of them. 20 (S)To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though not being myself under the law) that I might win those under the law. 21 To (T)those outside the law I became (U)as one outside the law (not being outside the law of God but (V)under the law of Christ) that I might win those outside the law. 22 (W)To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. (X)I have become all things to all people, that (Y)by all means I might save some. 23 I do it all for the sake of the gospel, (Z)that I may share with them in its blessings.

24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives (AA)the prize? So (AB)run that you may obtain it. 25 Every (AC)athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we (AD)an imperishable. 26 So I do not run aimlessly; I (AE)do not box as one (AF)beating the air. 27 But I discipline my body and (AG)keep it under control,[a] lest after preaching to others (AH)I myself should be (AI)disqualified.

  1. 1 Corinthians 9:27 Greek I pummel my body and make it a slave

(A)Carry no moneybag, no knapsack, no sandals, and (B)greet no one on the road. Whatever house you enter, first say, (C)‘Peace be to this house!’ And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him. But if not, (D)it will return to you. And remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for (E)the laborer deserves his wages. Do not go from house to house. Whenever you enter a town and they receive you, eat what is set before you. Heal the sick in it and say to them, (F)‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ 10 But whenever you enter a town and they do not receive you, go into its streets and say, 11 (G)‘Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet we wipe off against you. Nevertheless know this, that (H)the kingdom of God has come near.’ 12 I tell you, (I)it will be more bearable on (J)that day for Sodom than for that town.

He charged them to take nothing for their journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in their belts— but to (A)wear sandals and not put on two tunics.[a] 10 And he said to them, “Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you depart from there. 11 And if any place will not receive you and they will not listen to you, when you leave, (B)shake off the dust that is on your feet (C)as a testimony against them.”
