⁶ And he said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you ^(A)hypocrites, as it is written,

^16 (A)They profess to know God, but they ^(B)deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, ^(C)unfit for any good work.

^31 (A)And they come to you as people come, and they sit before you as my people, and they hear what you say but they will not do it; for ^(B)with lustful talk in their mouths they act; their heart is set on their gain.

^7 (A)You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said:

¹³ “But woe ^(A)to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you ^(B)shut the kingdom of heaven in people's faces. For you ^(C)neither enter yourselves nor allow those who would enter to go in.^{[a] 15} Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel across sea and land to make a single ^(D)proselyte, and when he becomes a proselyte, you make him twice as much a ^(E)child of ^(F)hell^[b] as yourselves.

⁵ having the appearance of godliness, but ^(A)denying its power. ^(B)Avoid such people.

Faith Without Works Is Dead

¹⁴ What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith ^(A)but does not have works? Can that faith save him? ^15 (B)If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, ^16 (C)and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good^[a] is that? ¹⁷ So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

³⁹ And the Lord said to him, ^(A)“Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you are full of ^(B)greed and wickedness. ^40 (C)You fools! ^(D)Did not he who made the outside make the inside also? ⁴¹ But ^(E)give as alms those things that are within, and behold, ^(F)everything is clean for you.

^42 (G)“But woe to you Pharisees! For ^(H)you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect ^(I)justice and ^(J)the love of God. ^(K)These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. ⁴³ Woe to you Pharisees! For ^(L)you love the best seat in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. ⁴⁴ Woe to you! ^(M)For you are like unmarked graves, and people walk over them without knowing it.”
