Persecution of Disciples

“You must watch out for yourselves. You will be handed over[a] to councils[b] and beaten in the synagogues.[c] You will stand before governors and kings[d] because of me, as a witness to them. 10 First the gospel must be preached to all nations. 11 When they arrest you and hand you over for trial,[e] do not worry about what to speak. But say whatever is given you at that time,[f] for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit. 12 Brother will hand over brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rise against[g] parents and have them put to death. 13 You will be hated by everyone because of my name.[h] But the one who endures to the end will be saved.[i]

Footnotes

  1. Mark 13:9 tn Grk “They will hand you over.” “They” is an indefinite plural, referring to people in general. The parallel in Matt 10:17 makes this explicit.
  2. Mark 13:9 sn Councils in this context has a non-technical sense referring to local judicial bodies (courts) attached to the Jewish synagogue (cf. BDAG 967 s.v. συνέδριον 1.a). These courts would be responsible for meting out justice and discipline within the Jewish community.
  3. Mark 13:9 sn See the note on synagogue in 1:21.
  4. Mark 13:9 sn These statements look at persecution both from a Jewish context as the mention of councils and synagogues suggests, and from a Gentile one as the reference to governors and kings suggests. Some fulfillment of Jewish persecution can be seen in Acts.
  5. Mark 13:11 tn Or “hand you over into custody,” in particular “as a t.t. of police and courts ‘hand over into [the] custody [of]’” (BDAG 762 s.v. παραδίδωμι 1.b). In context some sort of trial is implied (cf. Luke 12:11).
  6. Mark 13:11 tn Grk “in that hour.”
  7. Mark 13:12 tn Or “will rebel against.”
  8. Mark 13:13 sn See 1 Cor 1:25-31.
  9. Mark 13:13 sn But the one who endures to the end will be saved. Jesus was not claiming here that salvation is by works, because he had already taught that it is by grace (cf. 10:15). He was simply arguing that genuine faith evidences itself in persistence through even the worst of trials.

“But [a]be on your guard; for they will (A)hand you over to the [b]courts, and you will be flogged (B)in the synagogues, and you will stand before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them. 10 (C)And the gospel must first be preached to all the nations. 11 (D)And when they [c]arrest you and hand you over, do not worry beforehand about what you are to say, but say whatever is given you at that time; for you are not the ones speaking, but it is the Holy Spirit. 12 And brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and [d]have them put to death. 13 And (E)you will be hated by everyone because of My name, but it is the one who has endured to the end who will be saved.
