Some Pharisees(A) came to test(B) him, asking, “Is it lawful(C) for a man to divorce(D) his wife?” (E)

He replied to them, “What did Moses(F) command you?”

They said, “Moses permitted us to write divorce papers(G) and send her away.”(H)

But Jesus told them, “He wrote this command for you because of the hardness of your hearts. (I) But from the beginning(J) of creation(K) God[a] made them male and female.[b](L) For this reason a man will leave (M) his father and mother [c] and the two will become one flesh.[d](N) So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”(O)

10 When they were in the house again, the disciples questioned him about this matter. 11 He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife(P) and marries(Q) another commits adultery(R) against her. 12 Also, if she divorces her husband(S) and marries another, she commits adultery.”

Some Pharisees came and, trying to test him, they asked, “Does the Law allow a man to divorce his wife?”

Jesus answered, “What did Moses command you?”

They said, “Moses allowed a man to write a divorce certificate and to divorce his wife.”

Jesus said to them, “He wrote this commandment for you because of your unyielding hearts. At the beginning of creation, God made them male and female.[a] Because of this, a man should leave his father and mother and be joined together with his wife, and the two will be one flesh.[b] So they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore, humans must not pull apart what God has put together.”

10 Inside the house, the disciples asked him again about this. 11 He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her; 12 and if a wife divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”
