²³ Suddenly, a man in the synagogue who was possessed by an evil^[a] spirit cried out,

²⁵ When Jesus saw that the crowd of onlookers was growing, he rebuked the evil^[a] spirit. “Listen, you spirit that makes this boy unable to hear and speak,” he said. “I command you to come out of this child and never enter him again!”

³³ Once when he was in the synagogue, a man possessed by a demon—an evil^[a] spirit—cried out, shouting, ³⁴ “Go away! Why are you interfering with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”

³⁵ But Jesus reprimanded him. “Be quiet! Come out of the man,” he ordered. At that, the demon threw the man to the floor as the crowd watched; then it came out of him without hurting him further.

³⁶ Amazed, the people exclaimed, “What authority and power this man’s words possess! Even evil spirits obey him, and they flee at his command!” ³⁷ The news about Jesus spread through every village in the entire region.

²⁵ Right away a woman who had heard about him came and fell at his feet. Her little girl was possessed by an evil^[a] spirit,

² When Jesus climbed out of the boat, a man possessed by an evil^[a] spirit came out from the tombs to meet him.

³⁴ So Jesus healed many people who were sick with various diseases, and he cast out many demons. But because the demons knew who he was, he did not allow them to speak.

⁴³ “When an evil^[a] spirit leaves a person, it goes into the desert, seeking rest but finding none.
