Jesus Begins His Ministry

14 (A)Now after John was arrested, Jesus (B)came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, 15 and saying, (C)“The time is fulfilled, and (D)the kingdom of God is at hand;[a] (E)repent and believe in the gospel.”

Jesus Calls the First Disciples

16 (F)Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 17 And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become (G)fishers of men.”[b] 18 And immediately they left their nets and followed him. 19 And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets. 20 And immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him.

Jesus Heals a Man with an Unclean Spirit

21 (H)And they went into Capernaum, and immediately (I)on the Sabbath (J)he entered the synagogue and was teaching. 22 And (K)they were astonished at his teaching, (L)for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes. 23 And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, 24 (M)“What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? (N)I know who you are—(O)the Holy One of God.” 25 But Jesus (P)rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” 26 And the unclean spirit, (Q)convulsing him and (R)crying out with a loud voice, came out of him. 27 And they were all (S)amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? (T)A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.” 28 And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.

Jesus Heals Many

29 (U)And immediately he[c] (V)left the synagogue and entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. 30 Now (W)Simon's mother-in-law lay ill with a fever, and immediately they told him about her. 31 And he came and (X)took her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her, and she began to serve them.

32 That evening at sundown they brought to him all who were sick or (Y)oppressed by demons. 33 And the whole city was gathered together at the door. 34 (Z)And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons. And (AA)he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.

Jesus Preaches in Galilee

35 (AB)And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and (AC)there he prayed. 36 And Simon and those who were with him searched for him, 37 and they found him and said to him, (AD)“Everyone is looking for you.” 38 And he said to them, “Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for (AE)that is why I came out.” 39 (AF)And (AG)he went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons.

Jesus Cleanses a Leper

40 (AH)And a leper[d] came to him, imploring him, and (AI)kneeling said to him, (AJ)“If you will, you can make me clean.” 41 Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand and touched him and said to him, “I will; be clean.” 42 And immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean. 43 And (AK)Jesus[e] sternly charged him and sent him away at once, 44 and said to him, (AL)“See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, (AM)show yourself to the priest and (AN)offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, (AO)for a proof to them.” 45 (AP)But he went out and began to talk freely about it, and to spread the news, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter (AQ)a town, but was out in (AR)desolate places, and (AS)people were coming to him from every quarter.

14 After John(B) was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee,(C) proclaiming the good news of God.(D) 15 “The time has come,”(E) he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe(F) the good news!”(G)

Jesus Calls His First Disciples

16 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 17 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 18 At once they left their nets and followed him.(H)

19 When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. 20 Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.

Jesus Drives Out an Impure Spirit(I)

21 They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach.(J) 22 The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law.(K) 23 Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out, 24 “What do you want with us,(L) Jesus of Nazareth?(M) Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”(N)

25 “Be quiet!” said Jesus sternly. “Come out of him!”(O) 26 The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.(P)

27 The people were all so amazed(Q) that they asked each other, “What is this? A new teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him.” 28 News about him spread quickly over the whole region(R) of Galilee.

Jesus Heals Many(S)(T)

29 As soon as they left the synagogue,(U) they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. 30 Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they immediately told Jesus about her. 31 So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up.(V) The fever left her and she began to wait on them.

32 That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed.(W) 33 The whole town gathered at the door, 34 and Jesus healed many who had various diseases.(X) He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was.(Y)

Jesus Prays in a Solitary Place(Z)

35 Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.(AA) 36 Simon and his companions went to look for him, 37 and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!”

38 Jesus replied, “Let us go somewhere else—to the nearby villages—so I can preach there also. That is why I have come.”(AB) 39 So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues(AC) and driving out demons.(AD)

Jesus Heals a Man With Leprosy(AE)

40 A man with leprosy[a] came to him and begged him on his knees,(AF) “If you are willing, you can make me clean.”

41 Jesus was indignant.[b] He reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” 42 Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed.

43 Jesus sent him away at once with a strong warning: 44 “See that you don’t tell this to anyone.(AG) But go, show yourself to the priest(AH) and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing,(AI) as a testimony to them.” 45 Instead he went out and began to talk freely, spreading the news. As a result, Jesus could no longer enter a town openly but stayed outside in lonely places.(AJ) Yet the people still came to him from everywhere.(AK)
