The King on a Cross(A)

21 (B)Then they compelled a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, the father of Alexander and Rufus, as he was coming out of the country and passing by, to bear His cross. 22 (C)And they brought Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull. 23 (D)Then they gave Him wine mingled with myrrh to drink, but He did not take it. 24 And when they crucified Him, (E)they divided His garments, casting lots for them to determine what every man should take.

26 (B)Now as they led Him away, they laid hold of a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, who was coming from the country, and on him they laid the cross that he might bear it after Jesus.

27 And a great multitude of the people followed Him, and women who also mourned and lamented Him. 28 But Jesus, turning to them, said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29 (C)For indeed the days are coming in which they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren, wombs that never bore, and breasts which never nursed!’ 30 Then they will begin (D)‘to say to the mountains, “Fall on us!” and to the hills, “Cover us!” ’ 31 (E)For if they do these things in the green wood, what will be done in the dry?”

29 And (E)those who passed by blasphemed Him, (F)wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! (G)You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, 30 save Yourself, and come down from the cross!”

31 Likewise the chief priests also, (H)mocking among themselves with the scribes, said, “He saved (I)others; Himself He cannot save. 32 Let the Christ, the King of Israel, descend now from the cross, that we may see and [c]believe.”

Even (J)those who were crucified with Him reviled Him.

32 (A)There were also two others, criminals, led with Him to be put to death. 33 And (B)when they had come to the place called Calvary, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right hand and the other on the left. 34 [a]Then Jesus said, “Father, (C)forgive them, for (D)they do not know what they do.”

And (E)they divided His garments and cast lots. 35 And (F)the people stood looking on. But even the (G)rulers with them sneered, saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ, the chosen of God.”

36 The soldiers also mocked Him, coming and offering Him (H)sour wine, 37 and saying, “If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself.”

38 (I)And an inscription also was [b]written over Him in letters of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew:

39 (J)Then one of the criminals who were hanged blasphemed Him, saying, [c]“If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us.”

40 But the other, answering, rebuked him, saying, “Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation? 41 And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done (K)nothing wrong.” 42 Then he said [d]to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.”

JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

20 Then many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.

21 Therefore the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but, ‘He said, “I am the King of the Jews.” ’ ”

22 Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

23 (C)Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece. 24 They said therefore among themselves, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be,” that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says:

(D)“They divided My garments among them,
And for My clothing they cast lots.”

Therefore the soldiers did these things.

Behold Your Mother

25 (E)Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of (F)Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and (G)the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, (H)“Woman, behold your son!” 27 Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And from that hour that disciple took her (I)to his own home.

33 Now (B)when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. 34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which is translated, (C)“My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”

35 Some of those who stood by, when they heard that, said, “Look, He is calling for Elijah!” 36 Then (D)someone ran and filled a sponge full of sour wine, put it on a reed, and (E)offered it to Him to drink, saying, “Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to take Him down.”

37 (F)And Jesus cried out with a loud voice, and breathed His last.

38 Then (G)the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. 39 So (H)when the centurion, who stood opposite Him, saw that [a]He cried out like this and breathed His last, he said, “Truly this Man was the Son of God!”

40 (I)There were also women looking on (J)from afar, among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the Less and of Joses, and Salome, 41 who also (K)followed Him and ministered to Him when He was in Galilee, and many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.

45 (B)Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land. 46 And about the ninth hour (C)Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, (D)“My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”

47 Some of those who stood there, when they heard that, said, “This Man is calling for Elijah!” 48 Immediately one of them ran and took a sponge, (E)filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and offered it to Him to drink.

49 The rest said, “Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to save Him.”

50 And Jesus (F)cried out again with a loud voice, and (G)yielded up His spirit.

51 Then, behold, (H)the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, 52 and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; 53 and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many.

54 (I)So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, (J)“Truly this was the Son of God!”

55 And many women (K)who followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to Him, were there looking on from afar, 56 (L)among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and [a]Joses, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.

It Is Finished

28 After this, Jesus, [a]knowing that all things were now accomplished, (A)that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!” 29 Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and (B)they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. 30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, (C)“It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.

Jesus’ Side Is Pierced

31 (D)Therefore, because it was the Preparation Day, (E)that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a (F)high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. 32 Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who was crucified with Him. 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately (G)blood and water came out. 35 And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is (H)true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may (I)believe. 36 For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled, (J)“Not one of His bones shall be broken.” 37 And again another Scripture says, (K)“They shall look on Him whom they pierced.”
