²⁷ As he stepped out on shore, a man from the city who had demons met him. For a long time he had not worn^[a] any clothes, and he did not live in a house but in the tombs.

² And when he had stepped out of the boat, immediately a man from the tombs with an unclean spirit met him.^{(A) 3} He lived among the tombs, and no one could restrain him any more, even with a chain, ⁴ for he had often been restrained with shackles and chains, but the chains he wrenched apart, and the shackles he broke in pieces, and no one had the strength to subdue him. ⁵ Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always howling and bruising himself with stones.

²⁴ He, too, stripped off his clothes, and he, too, fell into a frenzy before Samuel. He lay naked all that day and all that night. Therefore it is said, “Is Saul also among the prophets?”

¹⁶ Whoever in the open field touches one who has been killed by a sword or who has died naturally,^[a] or a human bone, or a grave shall be unclean seven days.^(A)
