¹⁶ He went to Nazareth,^(A) where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue,^(B) as was his custom. He stood up to read,^(C)

² As was his custom, Paul went into the synagogue,^(A) and on three Sabbath^(B) days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures,^(C)

¹⁴ From Perga they went on to Pisidian Antioch.^(A) On the Sabbath^(B) they entered the synagogue^(C) and sat down. ¹⁵ After the reading from the Law^(D) and the Prophets, the leaders of the synagogue sent word to them, saying, “Brothers, if you have a word of exhortation for the people, please speak.”

¹⁶ Standing up, Paul motioned with his hand^(E) and said: “Fellow Israelites and you Gentiles who worship God, listen to me!

A Prophet Without Honor^(A)

6 Jesus left there and went to his hometown,^(B) accompanied by his disciples. ² When the Sabbath came,^(C) he began to teach in the synagogue,^(D) and many who heard him were amazed.^(E)

“Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing? ³ Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph,^[a] Judas and Simon?^(F) Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.^(G)

⁵⁴ Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue,^(A) and they were amazed.^(B) “Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?” they asked. ⁵⁵ “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son?^(C) Isn’t his mother’s^(D) name Mary, and aren’t his brothers^(E) James, Joseph, Simon and Judas?

²³ and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth.^(A) So was fulfilled^(B) what was said through the prophets, that he would be called a Nazarene.^(C)

⁵¹ Then he went down to Nazareth with them^(A) and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart.^(B)

⁴² When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom.

²⁰ “I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus replied. “I always taught in synagogues^(A) or at the temple,^(B) where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret.^(C)
