⁴ Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “I find no basis for an accusation against this man.”^(A)

³⁸ Pilate asked him, “What is truth?”

Jesus Sentenced to Death

After he had said this, he went out to the Jews again and told them, “I find no case against him.^(A)

²² A third time he said to them, “Why, what evil has he done? I have found in him no ground for the sentence of death; I will therefore have him flogged and then release him.”^(A)

¹⁴ and said to them, “You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people, and here I have examined him in your presence and have not found this man guilty of any of your charges against him.^{(A) 15} Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us. Indeed, he has done nothing to deserve death.

¹⁴ Pilate asked them, “Why, what evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him!”

¹⁸ For Christ also suffered^[a] for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you^[b] to God. He was put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit,^(A)

¹⁹ but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without defect or blemish.^(A)

²⁶ For it was fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, blameless, undefiled, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens.^(A)

⁴ Pilate went out again and said to them, “Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no case against him.”^{(A) 5} So Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate^[a] said to them, “Behold the man!”^{(B) 6} When the chief priests and the police saw him, they shouted, “Crucify him! Crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him; I find no case against him.”^(C)
