Luke 23:28-31 GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

28 Jesus turned to them and said, “You women of Jerusalem, don’t cry for me! Rather, cry for yourselves and your children! 29 The time is coming when people will say, ‘Blessed are the women who couldn’t get pregnant, who couldn’t give birth, and who couldn’t nurse a child.’ 30 Then people will say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us!’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us!’ 31 If people do this to a green tree, what will happen to a dry one?”

Luke 23:28-31 International Children’s Bible (ICB)

28 But Jesus turned and said to them, “Women of Jerusalem, don’t cry for me. Cry for yourselves and for your children too! 29 The time is coming when people will say, ‘Happy are the women who cannot have children! Happy are the women who have no babies to nurse.’ 30 Then people will say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us!’ And they will say to the hills, ‘Cover us!’ 31 If they act like this now when life is good, what will happen when bad times come?”[a]

Luke 23:28-31 The Passion Translation (TPT)

28 Jesus turned to them and said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me. You should be weeping for yourselves and your children. 29 For the day is coming when it will not be the women with children who are blessed but the childless. Then you will say, ‘The barren women are the most fortunate! Those who have never given birth and never nursed a child—they are more fortunate than we are, for they will never see their children put to death!’ 30 And the people will cry out for the mountains and hills to fall on top of them to hide them from all that is to come.[a] 31 For if this is what they do to the living Branch,[b] what will they do with the dead ones?”

Footnotes:

  1. Luke 23:30 See Hos. 10:8.
  2. Luke 23:31 The Aramaic is literally “a green tree.” This could be a figure of speech for “an innocent man.” The “dead” could be a figure of speech for “an evil man.”

Luke 23:28-31 New Living Translation (NLT)

28 But Jesus turned and said to them, “Daughters of Jerusalem, don’t weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29 For the days are coming when they will say, ‘Fortunate indeed are the women who are childless, the wombs that have not borne a child and the breasts that have never nursed.’ 30 People will beg the mountains, ‘Fall on us,’ and plead with the hills, ‘Bury us.’[a] 31 For if these things are done when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?[b]

  1. 23:30 Hos 10:8.
  2. 23:31 Or If these things are done to me, the living tree, what will happen to you, the dry tree?
