⁶⁷ They said, “If you are the Messiah,^[a] tell us.” He replied, “If I tell you, you will not believe,^(A)

³⁷ Although he had performed so many signs in their presence, they did not believe in him. ³⁸ This was to fulfill the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah:

³⁹ And so they could not believe, because Isaiah also said,

⁴¹ Isaiah said this because^[a] he saw his glory and spoke about him.^{(C) 42} Nevertheless many, even of the authorities, believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they did not confess it, for fear that they would be put out of the synagogue,^{(D) 43} for they loved human glory more than the glory that comes from God.

²⁴ So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah,^[a] tell us plainly.” ²⁵ Jesus answered, “I have told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name testify to me,^{(A) 26} but you do not believe because you do not belong to my sheep.^(B)

²⁷ He answered them, “I have told you already, and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?” ²⁸ Then they reviled him, saying, “You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses.^(A)

⁴³ Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot accept my word. ⁴⁴ You are from your father the devil, and you choose to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.^{(A) 45} But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me.^[a]

³⁹ “You search the scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life, and it is they that testify on my behalf.^{(A) 40} Yet you refuse to come to me to have life. ⁴¹ I do not accept glory from humans. ⁴² But I know that you do not have the love of God in^[a] you. ⁴³ I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not accept me; if another comes in his own name, you will accept him. ⁴⁴ How can you believe when you accept glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the one who alone is God?^{[b](B) 45} Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; your accuser is Moses, on whom you have set your hope.^{(C) 46} If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me.^{(D) 47} But if you do not believe what he wrote, how will you believe what I say?”

³¹ He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’ ”

⁶¹ But he was silent and did not answer. Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah,^[a] the Son of the Blessed One?”^{(A) 62} Jesus said, “I am, and

⁶³ Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, “Why do we still need witnesses?^{(C) 64} You have heard his blasphemy! What is your decision?” All of them condemned him as deserving death.^{(D) 65} Some began to spit on him, to blindfold him, and to strike him, saying to him, “Prophesy!” The guards also took him and beat him.^(E)

Peter Denies Jesus

⁶⁶ While Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the female servants of the high priest came by.^(F)

⁶³ But Jesus was silent. Then the high priest said to him, “I put you under oath before the living God, tell us if you are the Messiah,^[a] the Son of God.”^{(A) 64} Jesus said to him, “You have said so. But I tell you,

⁶⁵ Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, “He has blasphemed! Why do we still need witnesses? You have now heard his blasphemy.^{(C) 66} What do you think?” They answered, “He deserves death.”^{(D) 67} Then they spat in his face and struck him, and some slapped him,^{(E) 68} saying, “Prophesy to us, you Messiah!^[b] Who is it that struck you?”
