³¹ “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked^(A) to sift all of you as wheat.^(B)

⁸ Be alert and of sober mind.^(A) Your enemy the devil prowls around^(B) like a roaring lion^(C) looking for someone to devour.

Clean Garments for the High Priest

3 Then he showed me Joshua^(A) the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan^[a](B) standing at his right side to accuse him.

⁶ One day the angels^[a](A) came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan^[b](B) also came with them.^{(C) 7} The Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?”

Satan answered the Lord, “From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it.”^(D)

⁸ Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job?^(E) There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God^(F) and shuns evil.”^(G)

⁹ “Does Job fear God for nothing?”^(H) Satan replied. ¹⁰ “Have you not put a hedge^(I) around him and his household and everything he has?^(J) You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land.^{(K) 11} But now stretch out your hand and strike everything he has,^(L) and he will surely curse you to your face.”^(M)

¹² The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he has^(N) is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.”^(O)

Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.

2 On another day the angels^[a](A) came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came with them^(B) to present himself before him. ² And the Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?”

Satan answered the Lord, “From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it.”^(C)

³ Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.^(D) And he still maintains his integrity,^(E) though you incited me against him to ruin him without any reason.”^(F)

⁴ “Skin for skin!” Satan replied. “A man will give all he has^(G) for his own life. ⁵ But now stretch out your hand and strike his flesh and bones,^(H) and he will surely curse you to your face.”^(I)

⁶ The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, he is in your hands;^(J) but you must spare his life.”^(K)

¹⁰ Then I heard a loud voice in heaven^(A) say:

⁴ He fell to the ground and heard a voice^(A) say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?”

⁴¹ “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried^(A) and upset about many things,
