Jesus Weeps over Jerusalem

41 Now as He drew near, He saw the city and (A)wept over it, 42 saying, “If you had known, even you, especially in this (B)your day, the things that (C)make for your (D)peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. 43 For days will come upon you when your enemies will (E)build an embankment around you, surround you and close you in on every side, 44 (F)and level you, and your children within you, to the ground; and (G)they will not leave in you one stone upon another, (H)because you did not know the time of your visitation.”

Jesus Cleanses the Temple(I)

45 (J)Then He went into the temple and began to drive out those who [a]bought and sold in it, 46 saying to them, “It is written, (K)‘My house [b]is a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a (L)‘den of thieves.’

47 And He (M)was teaching daily in the temple. But (N)the chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people sought to destroy Him, 48 and were unable to do anything; for all the people were very attentive to (O)hear Him.

Jesus’ Authority Questioned(P)

20 Now (Q)it happened on one of those days, as He taught the people in the temple and preached the gospel, that the chief priests and the scribes, together with the elders, confronted Him and spoke to Him, saying, “Tell us, (R)by what authority are You doing these things? Or who is he who gave You this authority?”

But He answered and said to them, “I also will ask you one thing, and answer Me: The (S)baptism of John—was it from heaven or from men?”

And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Why [c]then did you not believe him?’ But if we say, ‘From men,’ all the people will stone us, (T)for they are persuaded that John was a prophet.” So they answered that they did not know where it was from.

And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

41 And when he came nigh, having seen the city, he wept over it,

42 saying -- `If thou didst know, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things for thy peace; but now they were hid from thine eyes.

43 `Because days shall come upon thee, and thine enemies shall cast around thee a rampart, and compass thee round, and press thee on every side,

44 and lay thee low, and thy children within thee, and they shall not leave in thee a stone upon a stone, because thou didst not know the time of thy inspection.'

45 And having entered into the temple, he began to cast forth those selling in it, and those buying,

46 saying to them, `It hath been written, My house is a house of prayer -- but ye made it a den of robbers.'

47 And he was teaching daily in the temple, but the chief priests and the scribes were seeking to destroy him -- also the chiefs of the people --

48 and they were not finding what they shall do, for all the people were hanging on him, hearing him.

20 And it came to pass, on one of those days, as he is teaching the people in the temple, and proclaiming good news, the chief priests and the scribes, with the elders, came upon [him],

and spake unto him, saying, `Tell us by what authority thou dost these things? or who is he that gave to thee this authority?'

And he answering said unto them, `I will question you -- I also -- one thing, and tell me:

the baptism of John, from heaven was it, or from men?'

And they reasoned with themselves, saying -- `If we may say, From heaven, he will say, Wherefore, then, did ye not believe him?

and if we may say, From men, all the people will stone us, for they are having been persuaded John to be a prophet.'

And they answered, that they knew not whence [it was],

and Jesus said to them, `Neither do I say to you by what authority I do these things.'

41 When He approached Jerusalem, He saw the city and (A)wept over it, 42 saying, “If you had known on this day, even you, the conditions for peace! But now they have been hidden from your eyes. 43 For the days will come upon you [a]when your enemies will (B)put up a [b]barricade against you, and (C)surround you and hem you in on every side, 44 and they will level you to the ground, and throw down your children within you, and (D)they will not leave in you one stone upon [c]another, because you did not recognize (E)the time of your visitation.”

Traders Driven from the Temple

45 (F)And Jesus entered the temple grounds and began to drive out those who were selling, 46 saying to them, “It is written: ‘(G)And My house will be a house of prayer,’ (H)but you have made it a den of robbers.”

47 And (I)He was teaching daily in the temple; but the chief priests and the scribes and the leading men among the people (J)were trying to put Him to death, 48 and yet they could not find [d]anything that they might do, for all the people were hanging on to [e]every word He said.

Jesus’ Authority Questioned

20 (K)On one of the days while (L)He was teaching the people in the temple and (M)preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes with the elders (N)confronted Him, and they declared, saying to Him, “Tell us by what authority You are doing these things, or who is the one who gave You this authority?” But He replied to them, “I will also ask you a [f]question, and you tell Me: Was the baptism of John from heaven or from men?” They discussed among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Why did you not believe him?’ But if we say, ‘From men,’ all the people will stone us to death, since they are convinced that John was a (O)prophet.” And so they answered that they did not know where it came from. And Jesus said to them, “Neither am I telling you by what authority I do these things.”
