28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together (A)for good,[a] for (B)those who are called according to his purpose. 29 For those whom he (C)foreknew he also (D)predestined (E)to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be (F)the firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also (G)justified, and those whom he justified he also (H)glorified.

God's Everlasting Love

31 What then shall we say to these things? (I)If God is for us, who can be[b] against us? 32 (J)He who did not spare his own Son but (K)gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? 33 Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? (L)It is God who justifies. 34 (M)Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—(N)who is at the right hand of God, (O)who indeed is interceding for us.[c] 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written,

(P)“For your sake (Q)we are being killed all the day long;
we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”

37 No, in all these things we are more than (R)conquerors through (S)him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

God's Sovereign Choice

(T)I am speaking the truth in Christ—I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit— that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. For (U)I could wish that I myself were (V)accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers,[d] my kinsmen (W)according to the flesh. They are (X)Israelites, and to them belong (Y)the adoption, (Z)the glory, (AA)the covenants, (AB)the giving of the law, (AC)the worship, and (AD)the promises. To them belong (AE)the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ, (AF)who is God over all, (AG)blessed forever. Amen.

But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel, and not all are children of Abraham (AH)because they are his offspring, but (AI)“Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.” This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but (AJ)the children of the promise are counted as offspring. For this is what the promise said: (AK)“About this time next year I will return, and Sarah shall have a son.” 10 And not only so, but (AL)also when Rebekah had conceived children by one man, our forefather Isaac, 11 though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad—in order that God's purpose of election might continue, not because of works but because of (AM)him who calls— 12 she was told, (AN)“The older will serve the younger.” 13 As it is written, (AO)“Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”

14 What shall we say then? (AP)Is there injustice on God's part? By no means! 15 For he says to Moses, (AQ)“I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” 16 So then it depends not on human will or exertion,[e] but on God, who has mercy. 17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, (AR)“For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I might show my power in you, and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.” 18 So then he has mercy on whomever he wills, and he hardens whomever he wills.

19 You will say to me then, “Why does he still find fault? For (AS)who can resist his will?” 20 But who are you, O man, (AT)to answer back to God? (AU)Will what is molded say to its molder, “Why have you made me like this?” 21 (AV)Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump (AW)one vessel for honorable use and another for dishonorable use? 22 What if God, desiring to show his wrath and to make known his power, has endured with much patience (AX)vessels of wrath (AY)prepared for destruction, 23 in order to make known (AZ)the riches of his glory for vessels of mercy, which he (BA)has prepared beforehand for glory— 24 even us whom he (BB)has called, (BC)not from the Jews only but also from the Gentiles?

Greeting

Paul, (A)an apostle of Christ Jesus (B)by the will of God,

To the saints who are in Ephesus, and (C)are faithful[a] in Christ Jesus:

(D)Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Spiritual Blessings in Christ

(E)Blessed be (F)the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing (G)in the heavenly places, (H)even as he (I)chose us in him (J)before the foundation of the world, that we should be (K)holy and blameless before him. In love (L)he predestined us[b] for (M)adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, (N)according to the purpose of his will, (O)to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in (P)the Beloved. (Q)In him we have (R)redemption (S)through his blood, (T)the forgiveness of our trespasses, (U)according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight (V)making known[c] to us the mystery of his will, (W)according to his purpose, which he (X)set forth in Christ 10 as a plan for (Y)the fullness of time, (Z)to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.

11 In him we have obtained (AA)an inheritance, (AB)having been predestined (AC)according to the purpose of him who works all things according to (AD)the counsel of his will, 12 so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be (AE)to the praise of his glory. 13 In him you also, when you heard (AF)the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, (AG)were sealed with the (AH)promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is (AI)the guarantee[d] of our (AJ)inheritance until (AK)we acquire (AL)possession of it,[e] (AM)to the praise of his glory.

Thanksgiving and Prayer

15 For this reason, (AN)because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love[f] toward all the saints, 16 I (AO)do not cease to give thanks for you, (AP)remembering you in my prayers, 17 that (AQ)the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, (AR)may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, 18 (AS)having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is (AT)the hope to which he has called you, what are (AU)the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, (AV)according to the working of (AW)his great might 20 that he worked in Christ (AX)when he raised him from the dead and (AY)seated him at his right hand (AZ)in the heavenly places, 21 (BA)far above (BB)all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above (BC)every name that is named, not only in (BD)this age but also in the one to come. 22 And (BE)he put all things under his feet and gave him as (BF)head over all things to the church, 23 (BG)which is his body, (BH)the fullness of him (BI)who fills (BJ)all in all.

By Grace Through Faith

(BK)And you were (BL)dead in the trespasses and sins (BM)in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following (BN)the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in (BO)the sons of disobedience— among whom we all once lived in (BP)the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body[g] and the mind, and (BQ)were by nature (BR)children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.[h] But[i] God, being (BS)rich in mercy, (BT)because of the great love with which he loved us, even (BU)when we were dead in our trespasses, (BV)made us alive together with Christ—(BW)by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and (BX)seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable (BY)riches of his grace in (BZ)kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For (CA)by grace you have been saved (CB)through faith. And this is (CC)not your own doing; (CD)it is the gift of God, (CE)not a result of works, (CF)so that no one may boast. 10 For (CG)we are his workmanship, (CH)created in Christ Jesus (CI)for good works, (CJ)which God prepared beforehand, (CK)that we should walk in them.

And (G)you became imitators of us (H)and of the Lord, for (I)you received the word in much affliction, (J)with the (K)joy of the Holy Spirit, so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. For not only has the word of the Lord (L)sounded forth from you in Macedonia and Achaia, but your faith in God has gone forth (M)everywhere, so that we need not say anything. For they themselves report concerning us the kind of (N)reception we had among you, and how (O)you turned to God (P)from idols to serve the living and (Q)true God, 10 and (R)to wait for his Son (S)from heaven, (T)whom he raised from the dead, Jesus (U)who delivers us from (V)the wrath to come.
