Jesus Rejoices in the Father's Will

21 (A)In that same hour (B)he rejoiced (C)in the Holy Spirit and said, “I thank you, Father, (D)Lord of heaven and earth, that (E)you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and (F)revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for (G)such was your gracious will.[a]

Wisdom from the Spirit

Yet among (A)the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not (B)a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, (C)who are doomed to pass away. But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, (D)which God decreed before the ages for our glory. None of (E)the rulers of this age understood this, for (F)if they had, they would not have crucified (G)the Lord of glory.

that (A)their hearts may be encouraged, being (B)knit together in love, to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of (C)God's mystery, which is Christ, (D)in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

11 And he answered them, (A)“To you it has been given to know (B)the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. 12 (C)For to the one who has, more will be given, and he will have an abundance, but from the one who has not, (D)even what he has will be taken away. 13 This is why I speak to them in parables, because (E)seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, (F)nor do they understand. 14 Indeed, in their case the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled that says:

(G)“‘“You will indeed hear but never understand,
and you will indeed see but never perceive.”
15 For this people's heart has grown dull,
and with their ears (H)they can barely hear,
and (I)their eyes they have closed,
lest they should see with their eyes
    and hear with their ears
and (J)understand with their heart
and (K)turn, and I would heal them.’

16 But (L)blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear.

Come to Me, and I Will Give You Rest

25 (A)At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, (B)Lord of heaven and earth, that (C)you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and (D)revealed them to little children; 26 yes, Father, for such was your (E)gracious will.[a] 27 (F)All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son (G)except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone (H)to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

Divisions in the Church

10 I appeal to you, brothers,[a] by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no (C)divisions among you, but that you be united (D)in the same mind and the same judgment. 11 For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there is (E)quarreling among you, my brothers. 12 What I mean is that (F)each one of you says, “I follow Paul,” or “I follow (G)Apollos,” or “I follow (H)Cephas,” or “I follow Christ.” 13 (I)Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you (J)baptized in the name of Paul? 14 I thank God that I baptized none of you except (K)Crispus and (L)Gaius, 15 so that no one may say that you were baptized in my name. 16 (I did baptize also (M)the household of Stephanas. Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized anyone else.) 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and (N)not with words of eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

Christ the Wisdom and Power of God

18 For the word of the cross is (O)folly to (P)those who are perishing, but to us (Q)who are being saved it is (R)the power of God. 19 For it is written,

(S)“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.”

20 (T)Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? (U)Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach[b] to save those who believe. 22 For (V)Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ (W)crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, 24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ (X)the power of God and (Y)the wisdom of God. 25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

26 For consider your calling, brothers: (Z)not many of you were wise according to worldly standards,[c] not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. 27 But (AA)God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; (AB)God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; 28 God chose what is low and despised in the world, even (AC)things that are not, to (AD)bring to nothing things that are, 29 so (AE)that no human being[d] might boast in the presence of God.
