Introduction^(A)

1 Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled^[a] among us,

Jesus Taken Up Into Heaven

1 In my former book,^(A) Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach^{(B) 2} until the day he was taken up to heaven,^(C) after giving instructions^(D) through the Holy Spirit to the apostles^(E) he had chosen.^{(F) 3} After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them^(G) over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.^(H)

¹⁶ For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power,^(A) but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.^{(B) 17} He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”^{[a](C) 18} We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain.^(D)

¹⁹ We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable,^(E) and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light^(F) shining in a dark place, until the day dawns^(G) and the morning star^(H) rises in your hearts.^(I)

¹⁶ Beyond all question, the mystery^(A) from which true godliness^(B) springs is great:

³¹ But these are written that you may believe^[a](A) that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God,^(B) and that by believing you may have life in his name.^(C)

¹⁷ But the Lord stood at my side^(A) and gave me strength,^(B) so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it.^(C) And I was delivered from the lion’s mouth.^(D)
