The Temptation of Jesus

(A)And Jesus, (B)full of the Holy Spirit, (C)returned from the Jordan and was led (D)by the Spirit in the wilderness for (E)forty days, (F)being tempted by the devil. (G)And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, (H)he was hungry. The devil said to him, “If you are (I)the Son of God, command (J)this stone to become bread.” And Jesus answered him, (K)“It is written, (L)‘Man shall not live by bread alone.’” (M)And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, and said to him, “To you (N)I will give all this authority and their glory, (O)for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.” And Jesus answered him, (P)“It is written,

(Q)“‘You shall worship the Lord your God,
and (R)him only shall you serve.’”

(S)And he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are (T)the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, 10 for it is written,

(U)“‘He will command his angels concerning you,
    to guard you,’

11 and

(V)“‘On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”

12 And Jesus answered him, “It is said, (W)‘You shall not (X)put the Lord your God to the test.’” 13 And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him (Y)until an opportune time.

Jesus Begins His Ministry

14 (Z)And Jesus returned (AA)in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and (AB)a report about him went out through all the surrounding country. 15 And (AC)he taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

16 (AD)And he came to (AE)Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And (AF)as was his custom, (AG)he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up (AH)to read. 17 And (AI)the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,

18 (AJ)“The Spirit of the Lord (AK)is upon me,
    because he has anointed me
to (AL)proclaim good news to the poor.
(AM)He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and (AN)recovering of sight to the blind,
(AO)to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
19 (AP)to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.”

20 And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and (AQ)sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were (AR)fixed on him. 21 And he began to say to them, “Today (AS)this Scripture (AT)has been fulfilled in your hearing.” 22 And all spoke well of him and marveled at (AU)the gracious words that were coming from his mouth. And they said, (AV)“Is not this (AW)Joseph's son?” 23 And he said to them, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, (AX)‘“Physician, heal yourself.” What we have heard you did (AY)at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.’” 24 And he said, “Truly, I say to you, (AZ)no prophet is acceptable in his hometown. 25 But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when (BA)the heavens were shut up three years and six months, and a great famine came over all the land, 26 and Elijah was sent to none of them (BB)but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27 And (BC)there were many lepers[a] in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed, (BD)but only Naaman the Syrian.” 28 When they heard these things, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. 29 And they rose up and (BE)drove him out of the town and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff. 30 But (BF)passing through their midst, he went away.

Jesus Heals a Man with an Unclean Demon

31 (BG)And he (BH)went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And (BI)he was teaching them (BJ)on the Sabbath, 32 and (BK)they were astonished at his teaching, (BL)for his word possessed authority. 33 And (BM)in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, 34 “Ha![b] (BN)What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? (BO)I know who you are—(BP)the Holy One of God.” 35 But Jesus (BQ)rebuked him, saying, “Be silent and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in their midst, he came out of him, having done him no harm. 36 And (BR)they were all amazed and said to one another, “What is this word? (BS)For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!” 37 And (BT)reports about him went out into every place in the surrounding region.

Jesus Heals Many

38 (BU)And he arose and left the synagogue and entered Simon's house. Now (BV)Simon's mother-in-law was ill with a high fever, and they appealed to him on her behalf. 39 And he stood over her and (BW)rebuked the fever, and it left her, and immediately she rose and began to serve them.

40 Now when the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to him, and (BX)he laid his hands on every one of them and healed them. 41 (BY)And demons also came out of many, (BZ)crying, “You are (CA)the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and (CB)would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was (CC)the Christ.

Jesus Preaches in Synagogues

42 (CD)And when it was day, he departed and went (CE)into a desolate place. And (CF)the people sought him and came to him, and would have kept him from leaving them, 43 but he said to them, (CG)“I must (CH)preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well; for I was sent for this purpose.” 44 And he was preaching (CI)in the synagogues of Judea.[c]

Jesus Calls the First Disciples

On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by (CJ)the lake of Gennesaret, (CK)and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were (CL)washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And (CM)he sat down and taught the people from the boat. And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, (CN)“Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” And Simon answered, “Master, (CO)we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” And when they had done this, (CP)they enclosed a large number of fish, and (CQ)their nets were breaking. They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. (CR)And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, (CS)“Depart from me, for (CT)I am a sinful man, O Lord.” For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken, 10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.”[d] 11 And when they had brought their boats to land, (CU)they left everything and followed him.

Jesus Cleanses a Leper

12 While he was in one of the cities, (CV)there came a man full of leprosy.[e] And when he saw Jesus, he (CW)fell on his face and begged him, “Lord, (CX)if you will, you can make me clean.” 13 And Jesus[f] stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately the leprosy left him. 14 And he charged him (CY)to tell no one, but “go and show (CZ)yourself to the priest, and (DA)make an offering for your cleansing, as Moses commanded, (DB)for a proof to them.” 15 (DC)But now even more the report about him went abroad, and great crowds gathered to hear him and to be healed of their infirmities. 16 But (DD)he would withdraw to desolate places and (DE)pray.

Jesus Heals a Paralytic

17 On one of those days, as he was teaching, Pharisees and (DF)teachers of the law were sitting there, who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem. And (DG)the power of the Lord was with him to heal.[g] 18 (DH)And behold, some men were bringing (DI)on a bed a man who was paralyzed, and they were seeking to bring him in and lay him before Jesus, 19 but finding no way to bring him in, because of the crowd, they went up on (DJ)the roof and let him down with his bed (DK)through the tiles into the midst before Jesus. 20 And (DL)when he saw their faith, he said, “Man, (DM)your sins are forgiven you.” 21 And the scribes and the Pharisees began to question, saying, “Who is this who speaks (DN)blasphemies? (DO)Who can forgive sins but God alone?” 22 When Jesus (DP)perceived their thoughts, he answered them, “Why do you question in your hearts? 23 Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? 24 But that you may know that (DQ)the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the man who was paralyzed—“I say to you, rise, pick up your bed and go home.” 25 And immediately he rose up before them and picked up what he had been lying on and went home, (DR)glorifying God. 26 And amazement seized them all, and they (DS)glorified God and were filled (DT)with awe, saying, “We have seen extraordinary things today.”

Jesus Calls Levi

27 (DU)After this he went out and saw (DV)a tax collector named (DW)Levi, sitting at the tax booth. And he said to him, “Follow me.” 28 And (DX)leaving everything, he rose and followed him.

29 And Levi made him a great feast in his house, and there was a large company (DY)of tax collectors and others reclining at table with them. 30 And the Pharisees and (DZ)their scribes grumbled at his disciples, saying, (EA)“Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” 31 And Jesus answered them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 32 (EB)I have not come to call the righteous (EC)but sinners (ED)to repentance.”

A Question About Fasting

33 And they said to him, (EE)“The disciples of John (EF)fast often and (EG)offer prayers, (EH)and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink.” 34 And Jesus said to them, (EI)“Can you make wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? 35 (EJ)The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and (EK)then they will fast in those days.” 36 He also told them a parable: “No one tears a piece from a new garment and puts it on an old garment. If he does, he will tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old. 37 And no one puts new wine into old (EL)wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. 38 But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. 39 And no one after drinking old wine desires new, for he says, ‘The old is good.’”[h]

Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath

(EM)On a Sabbath,[i] while he was going through the grainfields, his disciples (EN)plucked and ate some heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands. But some of the Pharisees said, (EO)“Why are you doing (EP)what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?” And Jesus answered them, (EQ)“Have you not read (ER)what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: how he entered the house of God and took and ate (ES)the bread of the Presence, (ET)which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those with him?” And he said to them, (EU)“The Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.”

A Man with a Withered Hand

On another Sabbath, (EV)he entered the synagogue (EW)and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was withered. And the scribes and the Pharisees (EX)watched him, to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath, (EY)so that they might find a reason to accuse him. But (EZ)he knew their thoughts, and he said to the man with the withered hand, “Come and stand here.” And he rose and stood there. And Jesus said to them, “I ask you, (FA)is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to destroy it?” 10 And (FB)after looking around at them all he said to him, “Stretch out your hand.” And (FC)he did so, and his hand was restored. 11 But they were filled with (FD)fury and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus.

The Twelve Apostles

12 In these days (FE)he went out to the mountain to pray, and all night he continued in prayer to God. 13 And when day came, (FF)he called his disciples (FG)and (FH)chose from them twelve, whom he named (FI)apostles: 14 Simon, (FJ)whom he named Peter, and (FK)Andrew his brother, and (FL)James and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew, 15 and (FM)Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called (FN)the Zealot, 16 and (FO)Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

Jesus Ministers to a Great Multitude

17 And (FP)he came down with them and stood on a level place, with (FQ)a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the seacoast of (FR)Tyre and Sidon, 18 who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. (FS)And those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. 19 And all the crowd (FT)sought to touch him, for (FU)power came out from him and healed them all.

The Beatitudes

20 And (FV)he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, (FW)and said:

“Blessed are you who are poor, for (FX)yours is the kingdom of God.

21 (FY)“Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you shall be satisfied.

(FZ)“Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh.

22 “Blessed are you when (GA)people hate you and when they (GB)exclude you and revile you and (GC)spurn your name as evil, (GD)on account of the Son of Man! 23 (GE)Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for (GF)so their fathers did to the prophets.

Jesus Pronounces Woes

24 (GG)“But woe to you who are rich, (GH)for you (GI)have received your consolation.

25 “Woe to you who are full now, for (GJ)you shall be hungry.

“Woe to (GK)you who laugh now, (GL)for you shall mourn and weep.

26 “Woe to you, (GM)when all people speak well of you, for (GN)so their fathers did to (GO)the false prophets.

Love Your Enemies

27 “But I say to you who hear, (GP)Love your enemies, (GQ)do good to those who hate you, 28 (GR)bless those who curse you, (GS)pray for those who abuse you. 29 (GT)To one who (GU)strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from one who takes away your cloak do not withhold your tunic[j] either. 30 (GV)Give to everyone who begs from you, and from one who takes away your goods do not demand them back. 31 And (GW)as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.

32 (GX)“If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 And (GY)if you (GZ)lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to get back the same amount. 35 But (HA)love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and (HB)you will be sons of (HC)the Most High, for (HD)he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. 36 (HE)Be merciful, even as (HF)your Father is merciful.

Judging Others

37 (HG)(HH)“Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; (HI)forgive, and you will be forgiven; 38 (HJ)give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put (HK)into your lap. For (HL)with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”

39 He also told them a parable: (HM)“Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit? 40 (HN)A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is (HO)fully trained will be like his teacher. 41 (HP)Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but (HQ)do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother's eye.

A Tree and Its Fruit

43 “For (HR)no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit, 44 for (HS)each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. 45 (HT)The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces (HU)evil, (HV)for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

Build Your House on the Rock

46 (HW)“Why (HX)do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? 47 (HY)Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.[k] 49 (HZ)But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and (IA)the ruin of that house was great.”

Jesus Heals a Centurion's Servant

After he had finished all his sayings in the hearing of the people, (IB)he entered Capernaum. Now a centurion had a servant[l] who was sick and at the point of death, who was highly valued by him. When the centurion[m] heard about Jesus, (IC)he sent to him elders of the Jews, asking him to come and heal his servant. And when they came to Jesus, they pleaded with him earnestly, saying, (ID)“He is worthy to have you do this for him, for he loves our nation, and he is the one who built us (IE)our synagogue.” And Jesus went with them. When he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to him, “Lord, (IF)do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof. Therefore I did not presume to come to you. But (IG)say the word, and let my servant be healed. For I too am a man set under authority, with soldiers under me: and I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” When Jesus heard these things, (IH)he marveled at him, and turning to the crowd that followed him, said, “I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such (II)faith.” 10 And when those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the servant well.

Jesus Raises a Widow's Son

11 Soon afterward[n] he went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a great crowd went with him. 12 As he drew near to the gate of the town, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, (IJ)the only son of his mother, and she was a widow, and a considerable crowd from the town was with her. 13 And when the Lord saw her, (IK)he had compassion on her and (IL)said to her, “Do not weep.” 14 Then he came up and touched (IM)the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, “Young man, I say to you, (IN)arise.” 15 And the dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus[o] (IO)gave him to his mother. 16 Fear seized them all, and (IP)they glorified God, saying, (IQ)“A great prophet has arisen among us!” and (IR)“God has visited his people!” 17 And this report about him spread through the whole of Judea and all the surrounding country.

Messengers from John the Baptist

18 (IS)(IT)The disciples of John reported all these things to him. And John, 19 calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to the Lord, saying, “Are you the one (IU)who is to come, or (IV)shall we look for another?” 20 And when the men had come to him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to you, saying, ‘Are you the one (IW)who is to come, or (IX)shall we look for another?’” 21 In that hour (IY)he healed many people of diseases and plagues and evil spirits, and (IZ)on many who were blind he bestowed sight. 22 And he answered them, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: (JA)the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, (JB)lepers[p] are cleansed, and (JC)the deaf hear, (JD)the dead are raised up, (JE)the poor have good news preached to them. 23 And blessed is the one who is (JF)not offended by me.”

24 When John's messengers had gone, Jesus[q] began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go out (JG)into the wilderness to see? (JH)A reed shaken by the wind? 25 What then did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who are dressed in splendid clothing and live in luxury are in kings' courts. 26 What then did you go out to see? (JI)A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 27 This is he of whom it is written,

(JJ)“‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face,
who will prepare your way before you.’

28 I tell you, among those born of women none is greater than John. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” 29 ((JK)When all the people heard this, and (JL)the tax collectors too, they declared God just,[r] (JM)having been baptized with (JN)the baptism of John, 30 (JO)but the Pharisees and (JP)the lawyers (JQ)rejected (JR)the purpose of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.)

31 “To what then shall I compare the people of this generation, and what are they like? 32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another,

“‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge, and you did not weep.’

33 For John the Baptist has come (JS)eating no bread and (JT)drinking no wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ 34 The Son of Man has come (JU)eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, (JV)a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ 35 Yet (JW)wisdom is justified by all her children.”

A Sinful Woman Forgiven

36 (JX)One of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee's house and reclined at table. 37 (JY)And behold, a woman of the city, who was a sinner, when she learned that he was reclining at table in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster flask of ointment, 38 and standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears and (JZ)wiped them with the hair of her head and kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment. 39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If (KA)this man were (KB)a prophet, he (KC)would have known who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, for she is a sinner.” 40 And Jesus answering said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he answered, “Say it, Teacher.”

41 “A certain moneylender had two debtors. One owed five hundred (KD)denarii, and the other fifty. 42 (KE)When they could not pay, he (KF)cancelled the debt of both. Now which of them will love him more?” 43 Simon answered, “The one, I suppose, for whom he cancelled the larger debt.” And he said to him, “You have judged rightly.” 44 Then turning toward the woman he said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; (KG)you gave me no water for my feet, but (KH)she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 (KI)You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not ceased to (KJ)kiss my feet. 46 (KK)You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. 47 Therefore I tell you, her sins, (KL)which are many, are forgiven—for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little.” 48 And he said to her, (KM)“Your sins are forgiven.” 49 Then those who were at table with him began to say among[s] themselves, (KN)“Who is this, who even forgives sins?” 50 And he said to the woman, (KO)“Your faith has saved you; (KP)go in peace.”

Women Accompanying Jesus

Soon afterward he went on (KQ)through cities and villages, proclaiming and (KR)bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with him, and also (KS)some women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: (KT)Mary, called Magdalene, (KU)from whom seven demons had gone out, and (KV)Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod's household manager, and Susanna, and many others, who provided for them[t] out of their means.

The Parable of the Sower

(KW)And when a great crowd was gathering and people from town after town came to him, he said in a parable, (KX)“A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell along the path and was trampled underfoot, and the birds of the air devoured it. And some fell on the rock, and as it grew up, (KY)it withered away, because it had no moisture. And some fell among (KZ)thorns, and the thorns grew up with it and choked it. And some fell into good soil and grew and yielded (LA)a hundredfold.” As he said these things, he called out, (LB)“He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

The Purpose of the Parables

And when his disciples asked him what this parable meant, 10 he said, (LC)“To you it has been given to know (LD)the secrets of the kingdom of God, but for others they are in parables, so (LE)that ‘seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.’ 11 (LF)Now the parable is this: The seed is (LG)the word of God. 12 The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not (LH)believe and be saved. 13 And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it (LI)with joy. But these have no root; they (LJ)believe for a while, and in time of testing (LK)fall away. 14 And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but (LL)as they go on their way they are choked by the (LM)cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. 15 As for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and (LN)bear fruit (LO)with patience.

A Lamp Under a Jar

16 (LP)(LQ)“No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light. 17 (LR)For nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest, nor is anything secret that will not be known and come to light. 18 (LS)Take care then how you hear, (LT)for to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he thinks that he has will be taken away.”

Jesus' Mother and Brothers

19 (LU)Then his mother and (LV)his brothers[u] came to him, but they could not reach him because of the crowd. 20 And he was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see you.” 21 But he answered them, “My mother and my brothers are those (LW)who hear the word of God and do it.”

Jesus Calms a Storm

22 (LX)One day he got into a boat with his disciples, and he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side of (LY)the lake.” So they set out, 23 and as they sailed he fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on (LZ)the lake, and they were filling with water and were in danger. 24 And they went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And he awoke and (MA)rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, (MB)and there was a calm. 25 He said to them, “Where is your faith?” And they (MC)were afraid, and they (MD)marveled, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that (ME)he commands even winds and water, and they obey him?”

Jesus Heals a Man with a Demon

26 (MF)Then they sailed to the country of the Gerasenes,[v] which is opposite Galilee. 27 When Jesus[w] had stepped out on land, there met him a man from the city who had demons. For a long time he had worn no clothes, and he had not lived in a house (MG)but among the tombs. 28 When he saw Jesus, he (MH)cried out and fell down before him and said (MI)with a loud voice, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, (MJ)Son of (MK)the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me.” 29 For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many a time it had seized him. He was kept under guard and bound with chains and shackles, but he would break the bonds and be driven by the demon (ML)into the desert.) 30 Jesus then asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, (MM)“Legion,” for many demons had entered him. 31 And they begged him not to command them to depart into (MN)the abyss. 32 Now a large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, and they begged him to let them enter these. So he gave them permission. 33 Then the demons came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into (MO)the lake and drowned.

34 When the herdsmen saw what had happened, they fled and told it in the city and in the country. 35 Then people went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone, sitting (MP)at the feet of Jesus, (MQ)clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. 36 And those who had seen it told them how the demon-possessed[x] man had been healed. 37 Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gerasenes (MR)asked him to depart from them, for they were seized with great fear. So he got into the boat and returned. 38 The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, 39 “Return to your home, and (MS)declare how much God has done for you.” And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him.

Jesus Heals a Woman and Jairus's Daughter

40 Now when Jesus returned, the crowd (MT)welcomed him, for they were all waiting for him. 41 (MU)And there came a man named Jairus, who was (MV)a ruler of the synagogue. And falling at Jesus' feet, he implored him to come to his house, 42 for he had (MW)an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying.

As Jesus went, the people (MX)pressed around him. 43 And there was a woman (MY)who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, and though she had spent all her (MZ)living on physicians,[y] she could not be healed by anyone. 44 She came up behind him and touched (NA)the fringe of his garment, and (NB)immediately her discharge of blood ceased. 45 And Jesus said, “Who was it that touched me?” When all denied it, Peter[z] said, “Master, the crowds surround you and are pressing in on you!” 46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched me, for I perceive that (NC)power has gone out from me.” 47 And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. 48 And he said to her, “Daughter, (ND)your faith has made you well; (NE)go in peace.”

49 While he was still speaking, someone from (NF)the ruler's house came and said, “Your daughter is dead; (NG)do not trouble (NH)the Teacher any more.” 50 But Jesus on hearing this answered him, “Do not fear; only believe, and she will be well.” 51 And when he came to the house, he allowed no one to enter with him, except (NI)Peter and (NJ)John and James, and the father and mother of the child. 52 And all were weeping and (NK)mourning for her, but he (NL)said, “Do not weep, for (NM)she is not dead but (NN)sleeping.” 53 And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. 54 But (NO)taking her by the hand he called, saying, “Child, (NP)arise.” 55 And (NQ)her spirit returned, and she got up at once. And he directed that something should be given her to eat. 56 And her parents were amazed, but (NR)he charged them to tell no one what had happened.

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Apostles

(NS)And he called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, (NT)and he sent them out to (NU)proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal. (NV)And he said to them, “Take nothing for your journey, (NW)no staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money; and do not have two tunics.[aa] And whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart. And wherever they do not receive you, when you leave that town (NX)shake off the dust from your feet (NY)as a testimony (NZ)against them.” (OA)And they departed and went through the villages, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.

Herod Is Perplexed by Jesus

(OB)Now (OC)Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening, and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that (OD)John had been raised from the dead, (OE)by some that Elijah had appeared, and (OF)by others that one of the prophets of old had risen. Herod said, “John I beheaded, but who is this about whom I hear such things?” And (OG)he sought to see him.

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

10 On their return (OH)the apostles told him all that they had done. (OI)And he took them and withdrew apart to a town called Bethsaida. 11 When the crowds learned it, they followed him, and he (OJ)welcomed them and (OK)spoke to them of the kingdom of God and (OL)cured those who had need of healing. 12 Now (OM)the day began to wear away, and the twelve came and said to him, (ON)“Send the crowd away to go into the surrounding villages and countryside to find lodging and get provisions, for we are here in a desolate place.”

Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness(A)

Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit,(B) left the Jordan(C) and was led by the Spirit(D) into the wilderness, where for forty days(E) he was tempted[a] by the devil.(F) He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.

The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God,(G) tell this stone to become bread.”

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’[b](H)

The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world.(I) And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me,(J) and I can give it to anyone I want to. If you worship me, it will all be yours.”

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’[c](K)

The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. 10 For it is written:

“‘He will command his angels concerning you
    to guard you carefully;
11 they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’[d](L)

12 Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’[e](M)

13 When the devil had finished all this tempting,(N) he left him(O) until an opportune time.

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

14 Jesus returned to Galilee(P) in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside.(Q) 15 He was teaching in their synagogues,(R) and everyone praised him.

16 He went to Nazareth,(S) where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue,(T) as was his custom. He stood up to read,(U) 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me,(V)
    because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news(W) to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
19     to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”[f](X)

20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down.(Y) The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled(Z) in your hearing.”

22 All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” they asked.(AA)

23 Jesus said to them, “Surely you will quote this proverb to me: ‘Physician, heal yourself!’ And you will tell me, ‘Do here in your hometown(AB) what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.’”(AC)

24 “Truly I tell you,” he continued, “no prophet is accepted in his hometown.(AD) 25 I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land.(AE) 26 Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon.(AF) 27 And there were many in Israel with leprosy[g] in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed—only Naaman the Syrian.”(AG)

28 All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this. 29 They got up, drove him out of the town,(AH) and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff. 30 But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way.(AI)

Jesus Drives Out an Impure Spirit(AJ)

31 Then he went down to Capernaum,(AK) a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he taught the people. 32 They were amazed at his teaching,(AL) because his words had authority.(AM)

33 In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice, 34 “Go away! What do you want with us,(AN) Jesus of Nazareth?(AO) Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are(AP)—the Holy One of God!”(AQ)

35 “Be quiet!” Jesus said sternly.(AR) “Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him.

36 All the people were amazed(AS) and said to each other, “What words these are! With authority(AT) and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!” 37 And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area.(AU)

Jesus Heals Many(AV)(AW)

38 Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her. 39 So he bent over her and rebuked(AX) the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them.

40 At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one,(AY) he healed them.(AZ) 41 Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God!”(BA) But he rebuked(BB) them and would not allow them to speak,(BC) because they knew he was the Messiah.

42 At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving them. 43 But he said, “I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God(BD) to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.” 44 And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.(BE)

Jesus Calls His First Disciples(BF)

One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret,[h] the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God.(BG) He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.(BH)

When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”(BI)

Simon answered, “Master,(BJ) we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything.(BK) But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”

When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.(BL) So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.

When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!”(BM) For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners.

Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid;(BN) from now on you will fish for people.” 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.(BO)

Jesus Heals a Man With Leprosy(BP)

12 While Jesus was in one of the towns, a man came along who was covered with leprosy.[i](BQ) When he saw Jesus, he fell with his face to the ground and begged him, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”

13 Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” And immediately the leprosy left him.

14 Then Jesus ordered him, “Don’t tell anyone,(BR) but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded(BS) for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.”

15 Yet the news about him spread all the more,(BT) so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses. 16 But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.(BU)

Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralyzed Man(BV)

17 One day Jesus was teaching, and Pharisees and teachers of the law(BW) were sitting there. They had come from every village of Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was with Jesus to heal the sick.(BX) 18 Some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat and tried to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus. 19 When they could not find a way to do this because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.

20 When Jesus saw their faith, he said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.”(BY)

21 The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves, “Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”(BZ)

22 Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked, “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts? 23 Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 24 But I want you to know that the Son of Man(CA) has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” 25 Immediately he stood up in front of them, took what he had been lying on and went home praising God. 26 Everyone was amazed and gave praise to God.(CB) They were filled with awe and said, “We have seen remarkable things today.”

Jesus Calls Levi and Eats With Sinners(CC)

27 After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth. “Follow me,”(CD) Jesus said to him, 28 and Levi got up, left everything and followed him.(CE)

29 Then Levi held a great banquet for Jesus at his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors(CF) and others were eating with them. 30 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect(CG) complained to his disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”(CH)

31 Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”(CI)

Jesus Questioned About Fasting(CJ)

33 They said to him, “John’s disciples(CK) often fast and pray, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours go on eating and drinking.”

34 Jesus answered, “Can you make the friends of the bridegroom(CL) fast while he is with them? 35 But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them;(CM) in those days they will fast.”

36 He told them this parable: “No one tears a piece out of a new garment to patch an old one. Otherwise, they will have torn the new garment, and the patch from the new will not match the old. 37 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. 38 No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins. 39 And no one after drinking old wine wants the new, for they say, ‘The old is better.’”

Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath(CN)

One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and his disciples began to pick some heads of grain, rub them in their hands and eat the kernels.(CO) Some of the Pharisees asked, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”(CP)

Jesus answered them, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?(CQ) He entered the house of God, and taking the consecrated bread, he ate what is lawful only for priests to eat.(CR) And he also gave some to his companions.” Then Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man(CS) is Lord of the Sabbath.”

On another Sabbath(CT) he went into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was shriveled. The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely(CU) to see if he would heal on the Sabbath.(CV) But Jesus knew what they were thinking(CW) and said to the man with the shriveled hand, “Get up and stand in front of everyone.” So he got up and stood there.

Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?”

10 He looked around at them all, and then said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He did so, and his hand was completely restored. 11 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law were furious(CX) and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus.

The Twelve Apostles(CY)

12 One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God.(CZ) 13 When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles:(DA) 14 Simon (whom he named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, 15 Matthew,(DB) Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot, 16 Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

Blessings and Woes(DC)

17 He went down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of his disciples was there and a great number of people from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the coastal region around Tyre and Sidon,(DD) 18 who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Those troubled by impure spirits were cured, 19 and the people all tried to touch him,(DE) because power was coming from him and healing them all.(DF)

20 Looking at his disciples, he said:

“Blessed are you who are poor,
for yours is the kingdom of God.(DG)
21 Blessed are you who hunger now,
    for you will be satisfied.(DH)
Blessed are you who weep now,
    for you will laugh.(DI)
22 Blessed are you when people hate you,
when they exclude you(DJ) and insult you(DK)
and reject your name as evil,
because of the Son of Man.(DL)

23 “Rejoice in that day and leap for joy,(DM) because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their ancestors treated the prophets.(DN)

24 “But woe to you who are rich,(DO)
for you have already received your comfort.(DP)
25 Woe to you who are well fed now,
    for you will go hungry.(DQ)
Woe to you who laugh now,
for you will mourn and weep.(DR)
26 Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you,
for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets.(DS)

Love for Enemies(DT)

27 “But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,(DU) 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.(DV) 29 If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them. 30 Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back.(DW) 31 Do to others as you would have them do to you.(DX)

32 “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you?(DY) Even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you?(DZ) Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. 35 But love your enemies, do good to them,(EA) and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children(EB) of the Most High,(EC) because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. 36 Be merciful,(ED) just as your Father(EE) is merciful.

Judging Others(EF)

37 “Do not judge, and you will not be judged.(EG) Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.(EH) 38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap.(EI) For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”(EJ)

39 He also told them this parable: “Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into a pit?(EK) 40 The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher.(EL)

41 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

A Tree and Its Fruit(EM)

43 “No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. 44 Each tree is recognized by its own fruit.(EN) People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers. 45 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.(EO)

The Wise and Foolish Builders(EP)

46 “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’(EQ) and do not do what I say?(ER) 47 As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice,(ES) I will show you what they are like. 48 They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. 49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”

The Faith of the Centurion(ET)

When Jesus had finished saying all this(EU) to the people who were listening, he entered Capernaum. There a centurion’s servant, whom his master valued highly, was sick and about to die. The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant. When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, “This man deserves to have you do this, because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.” So Jesus went with them.

He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: “Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.(EV) For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”

When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.” 10 Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well.

Jesus Raises a Widow’s Son(EW)

11 Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him. 12 As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out—the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. 13 When the Lord(EX) saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, “Don’t cry.”

14 Then he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!”(EY) 15 The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.

16 They were all filled with awe(EZ) and praised God.(FA) “A great prophet(FB) has appeared among us,” they said. “God has come to help his people.”(FC) 17 This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country.(FD)

Jesus and John the Baptist(FE)

18 John’s(FF) disciples(FG) told him about all these things. Calling two of them, 19 he sent them to the Lord to ask, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”

20 When the men came to Jesus, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to you to ask, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?’”

21 At that very time Jesus cured many who had diseases, sicknesses(FH) and evil spirits, and gave sight to many who were blind. 22 So he replied to the messengers, “Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy[j] are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.(FI) 23 Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”

24 After John’s messengers left, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 25 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear expensive clothes and indulge in luxury are in palaces. 26 But what did you go out to see? A prophet?(FJ) Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 27 This is the one about whom it is written:

“‘I will send my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare your way before you.’[k](FK)

28 I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God(FL) is greater than he.”

29 (All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus’ words, acknowledged that God’s way was right, because they had been baptized by John.(FM) 30 But the Pharisees and the experts in the law(FN) rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.)

31 Jesus went on to say, “To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation? What are they like? 32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to each other:

“‘We played the pipe for you,
    and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge,
    and you did not cry.’

33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine,(FO) and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ 34 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’(FP) 35 But wisdom is proved right by all her children.”

Jesus Anointed by a Sinful Woman(FQ)(FR)

36 When one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, he went to the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table. 37 A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume. 38 As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.

39 When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet,(FS) he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner.”

40 Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.”

“Tell me, teacher,” he said.

41 “Two people owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii,[l] and the other fifty. 42 Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?”

43 Simon replied, “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt forgiven.”

“You have judged correctly,” Jesus said.

44 Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet,(FT) but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You did not give me a kiss,(FU) but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. 46 You did not put oil on my head,(FV) but she has poured perfume on my feet. 47 Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.”

48 Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”(FW)

49 The other guests began to say among themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”

50 Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you;(FX) go in peace.”(FY)

The Parable of the Sower(FZ)

After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God.(GA) The Twelve were with him, and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene)(GB) from whom seven demons had come out; Joanna the wife of Chuza, the manager of Herod’s(GC) household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means.

While a large crowd was gathering and people were coming to Jesus from town after town, he told this parable: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds ate it up. Some fell on rocky ground, and when it came up, the plants withered because they had no moisture. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown.”

When he said this, he called out, “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”(GD)

His disciples asked him what this parable meant. 10 He said, “The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God has been given to you,(GE) but to others I speak in parables, so that,

“‘though seeing, they may not see;
though hearing, they may not understand.’[m](GF)

11 “This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God.(GG) 12 Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. 13 Those on the rocky ground are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away.(GH) 14 The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches(GI) and pleasures, and they do not mature. 15 But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.

A Lamp on a Stand

16 “No one lights a lamp and hides it in a clay jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, they put it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light.(GJ) 17 For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open.(GK) 18 Therefore consider carefully how you listen. Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they think they have will be taken from them.”(GL)

Jesus’ Mother and Brothers(GM)

19 Now Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see him, but they were not able to get near him because of the crowd. 20 Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers(GN) are standing outside, wanting to see you.”

21 He replied, “My mother and brothers are those who hear God’s word and put it into practice.”(GO)

Jesus Calms the Storm(GP)(GQ)

22 One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and set out. 23 As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger.

24 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master,(GR) we’re going to drown!”

He got up and rebuked(GS) the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm.(GT) 25 “Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples.

In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.”

Jesus Restores a Demon-Possessed Man(GU)(GV)

26 They sailed to the region of the Gerasenes,[n] which is across the lake from Galilee. 27 When Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs. 28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me,(GW) Jesus, Son of the Most High God?(GX) I beg you, don’t torture me!” 29 For Jesus had commanded the impure spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places.

30 Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”

“Legion,” he replied, because many demons had gone into him. 31 And they begged Jesus repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss.(GY)

32 A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into the pigs, and he gave them permission. 33 When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake(GZ) and was drowned.

34 When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, 35 and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus’ feet,(HA) dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 36 Those who had seen it told the people how the demon-possessed(HB) man had been cured. 37 Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them,(HC) because they were overcome with fear. So he got into the boat and left.

38 The man from whom the demons had gone out begged to go with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, 39 “Return home and tell how much God has done for you.” So the man went away and told all over town how much Jesus had done for him.

Jesus Raises a Dead Girl and Heals a Sick Woman(HD)

40 Now when Jesus returned, a crowd welcomed him, for they were all expecting him. 41 Then a man named Jairus, a synagogue leader,(HE) came and fell at Jesus’ feet, pleading with him to come to his house 42 because his only daughter, a girl of about twelve, was dying.

As Jesus was on his way, the crowds almost crushed him. 43 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding(HF) for twelve years,[o] but no one could heal her. 44 She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak,(HG) and immediately her bleeding stopped.

45 “Who touched me?” Jesus asked.

When they all denied it, Peter said, “Master,(HH) the people are crowding and pressing against you.”

46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched me;(HI) I know that power has gone out from me.”(HJ)

47 Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed. 48 Then he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you.(HK) Go in peace.”(HL)

49 While Jesus was still speaking, someone came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader.(HM) “Your daughter is dead,” he said. “Don’t bother the teacher anymore.”

50 Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.”

51 When he arrived at the house of Jairus, he did not let anyone go in with him except Peter, John and James,(HN) and the child’s father and mother. 52 Meanwhile, all the people were wailing and mourning(HO) for her. “Stop wailing,” Jesus said. “She is not dead but asleep.”(HP)

53 They laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. 54 But he took her by the hand and said, “My child, get up!”(HQ) 55 Her spirit returned, and at once she stood up. Then Jesus told them to give her something to eat. 56 Her parents were astonished, but he ordered them not to tell anyone what had happened.(HR)

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve(HS)(HT)

When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons(HU) and to cure diseases,(HV) and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God(HW) and to heal the sick. He told them: “Take nothing for the journey—no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra shirt.(HX) Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town. If people do not welcome you, leave their town and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.”(HY) So they set out and went from village to village, proclaiming the good news and healing people everywhere.

Now Herod(HZ) the tetrarch heard about all that was going on. And he was perplexed because some were saying that John(IA) had been raised from the dead,(IB) others that Elijah had appeared,(IC) and still others that one of the prophets of long ago had come back to life.(ID) But Herod said, “I beheaded John. Who, then, is this I hear such things about?” And he tried to see him.(IE)

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand(IF)(IG)

10 When the apostles(IH) returned, they reported to Jesus what they had done. Then he took them with him and they withdrew by themselves to a town called Bethsaida,(II) 11 but the crowds learned about it and followed him. He welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God,(IJ) and healed those who needed healing.

12 Late in the afternoon the Twelve came to him and said, “Send the crowd away so they can go to the surrounding villages and countryside and find food and lodging, because we are in a remote place here.”
