29 Abraham said to him, (A)‘They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.’ 30 And he said, ‘No, father Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ 31 But he said to him, (B)‘If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, (C)neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.’ ”

Jesus Warns of Offenses(D)

17 Then He said to the disciples, (E)“It is impossible that no [a]offenses should come, but (F)woe to him through whom they do come! It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were thrown into the sea, than that he should [b]offend one of these little ones. Take heed to yourselves. (G)If your brother sins [c]against you, (H)rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. And if he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times in a day returns [d]to you, saying, ‘I repent,’ you shall forgive him.”

Faith and Duty(I)

And the apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.”

(J)So the Lord said, “If you have faith as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be pulled up by the roots and be planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you. And which of you, having a servant plowing or tending sheep, will say to him when he has come in from the field, ‘Come at once and sit down to eat’? But will he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare something for my supper, and gird yourself (K)and serve me till I have eaten and drunk, and afterward you will eat and drink’? Does he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded [e]him? I think not. 10 So likewise you, when you have done all those things which you are commanded, say, ‘We are (L)unprofitable servants. We have done what was our duty to do.’ ”

Ten Lepers Cleansed

11 Now it happened (M)as He went to Jerusalem that He passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee. 12 Then as He entered a certain village, there met Him ten men who were lepers, (N)who stood afar off. 13 And they lifted up their voices and said, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!”

14 So when He saw them, He said to them, (O)“Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And so it was that as they went, they were cleansed.

15 And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, returned, and with a loud voice (P)glorified God, 16 and fell down on his face at His feet, giving Him thanks. And he was a (Q)Samaritan.

17 So Jesus answered and said, “Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine? 18 Were there not any found who returned to give glory to God except this foreigner?” 19 (R)And He said to him, “Arise, go your way. Your faith has made you well.”

The Coming of the Kingdom(S)

20 Now when He was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, He answered them and said, “The kingdom of God does not come with observation; 21 (T)nor will they say, [f]‘See here!’ or ‘See there!’ For indeed, (U)the kingdom of God is [g]within you.”

22 Then He said to the disciples, (V)“The days will come when you will desire to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it. 23 (W)And they will say to you, [h]‘Look here!’ or ‘Look there!’ Do not go after them or follow them. 24 (X)For as the lightning that flashes out of one part under heaven shines to the other part under heaven, so also the Son of Man will be in His day. 25 (Y)But first He must suffer many things and be (Z)rejected by this generation. 26 (AA)And as it (AB)was in the (AC)days of (AD)Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man: 27 They ate, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the (AE)day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and (AF)destroyed them all. 28 (AG)Likewise as it was also in the days of Lot: They ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built; 29 but on (AH)the day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. 30 Even so will it be in the day when the Son of Man (AI)is revealed.

31 “In that day, he (AJ)who is on the housetop, and his [i]goods are in the house, let him not come down to take them away. And likewise the one who is in the field, let him not turn back. 32 (AK)Remember Lot’s wife. 33 (AL)Whoever seeks to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it. 34 (AM)I tell you, in that night there will be two [j]men in one bed: the one will be taken and the other will be left. 35 (AN)Two women will be grinding together: the one will be taken and the other left. 36 [k]Two men will be in the field: the one will be taken and the other left.”

37 And they answered and said to Him, (AO)“Where, Lord?”

So He said to them, “Wherever the body is, there the eagles will be gathered together.”

The Parable of the Persistent Widow

18 Then He spoke a parable to them, that men (AP)always ought to pray and not lose heart, saying: “There was in a certain city a judge who did not fear God nor [l]regard man. Now there was a widow in that city; and she came to him, saying, [m]‘Get justice for me from my adversary.’ And he would not for a while; but afterward he said within himself, ‘Though I do not fear God nor regard man, (AQ)yet because this widow troubles me I will [n]avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.’ ”

Then the Lord said, “Hear what the unjust judge said. And (AR)shall God not avenge His own elect who cry out day and night to Him, though He bears long with them? I tell you (AS)that He will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He really find faith on the earth?”

The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector

Also He spoke this parable to some (AT)who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee (AU)stood and prayed thus with himself, (AV)‘God, I thank You that I am not like other men—extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.’ 13 And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; (AW)for everyone who exalts himself will be [o]humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Jesus Blesses Little Children(AX)

15 (AY)Then they also brought infants to Him that He might touch them; but when the disciples saw it, they rebuked them. 16 But Jesus called them to Him and said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for (AZ)of such is the kingdom of God. 17 (BA)Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it.”

Jesus Counsels the Rich Young Ruler(BB)

18 (BC)Now a certain ruler asked Him, saying, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”

19 So Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but (BD)One, that is, God. 20 You know the commandments: (BE)‘Do not commit adultery,’ ‘Do not murder,’ ‘Do not steal,’ ‘Do not bear false witness,’ (BF)‘Honor your father and your mother.’

21 And he said, “All (BG)these things I have kept from my youth.”

22 So when Jesus heard these things, He said to him, “You still lack one thing. (BH)Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”

23 But when he heard this, he became very sorrowful, for he was very rich.

With God All Things Are Possible(BI)

24 And when Jesus saw that he became very sorrowful, He said, (BJ)“How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God! 25 For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

26 And those who heard it said, “Who then can be saved?”

27 But He said, (BK)“The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.”

28 (BL)Then Peter said, “See, we have left [p]all and followed You.”

29 So He said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you, (BM)there is no one who has left house or parents or brothers or wife or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, 30 (BN)who shall not receive many times more in this present time, and in the age to come eternal life.”

Jesus a Third Time Predicts His Death and Resurrection(BO)

31 (BP)Then He took the twelve aside and said to them, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all things (BQ)that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of Man will be [q]accomplished. 32 For (BR)He will be delivered to the Gentiles and will be mocked and insulted and spit upon. 33 They will scourge Him and kill Him. And the third day He will rise again.”

34 (BS)But they understood none of these things; this saying was hidden from them, and they did not know the things which were spoken.

A Blind Man Receives His Sight(BT)

35 (BU)Then it happened, as He was coming near Jericho, that a certain blind man sat by the road begging. 36 And hearing a multitude passing by, he asked what it meant. 37 So they told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by. 38 And he cried out, saying, “Jesus, (BV)Son of David, have mercy on me!”

39 Then those who went before warned him that he should be quiet; but he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”

40 So Jesus stood still and commanded him to be brought to Him. And when he had come near, He asked him, 41 saying, “What do you want Me to do for you?”

He said, “Lord, that I may receive my sight.”

42 Then Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; (BW)your faith has made you well.” 43 And immediately he received his sight, and followed Him, (BX)glorifying God. And all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God.

Jesus Comes to Zacchaeus’ House

19 Then Jesus entered and passed through (BY)Jericho. Now behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus who was a chief tax collector, and he was rich. And he sought to (BZ)see who Jesus was, but could not because of the crowd, for he was of short stature. So he ran ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see Him, for He was going to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up [r]and saw him, and said to him, “Zacchaeus, [s]make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house.” So he [t]made haste and came down, and received Him joyfully. But when they saw it, they all [u]complained, saying, (CA)“He has gone to be a guest with a man who is a sinner.”

Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the (CB)poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by (CC)false accusation, (CD)I restore fourfold.”

And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because (CE)he also is (CF)a son of Abraham; 10 (CG)for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

The Parable of the Minas(CH)

11 Now as they heard these things, He spoke another parable, because He was near Jerusalem and because (CI)they thought the kingdom of God would appear immediately. 12 (CJ)Therefore He said: “A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and to return. 13 So he called ten of his servants, delivered to them ten [v]minas, and said to them, ‘Do business till I come.’ 14 (CK)But his citizens hated him, and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We will not have this man to reign over us.’

15 “And so it was that when he returned, having received the kingdom, he then commanded these servants, to whom he had given the money, to be called to him, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading. 16 Then came the first, saying, ‘Master, your mina has earned ten minas.’ 17 And he said to him, (CL)‘Well done, good servant; because you were (CM)faithful in a very little, have authority over ten cities.’ 18 And the second came, saying, ‘Master, your mina has earned five minas.’ 19 Likewise he said to him, ‘You also be over five cities.’

20 “Then another came, saying, ‘Master, here is your mina, which I have kept put away in a handkerchief. 21 (CN)For I feared you, because you are [w]an austere man. You collect what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.’ 22 And he said to him, (CO)‘Out of your own mouth I will judge you, you wicked servant. (CP)You knew that I was an austere man, collecting what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow. 23 Why then did you not put my money in the bank, that at my coming I might have collected it with interest?’

24 “And he said to those who stood by, ‘Take the mina from him, and give it to him who has ten minas.’ 25 (But they said to him, ‘Master, he has ten minas.’) 26 ‘For I say to you, (CQ)that to everyone who has will be given; and from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him. 27 But bring here those enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, and slay them before me.’ ”

The Triumphal Entry(CR)

28 When He had said this, (CS)He went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 (CT)And it came to pass, when He drew near to [x]Bethphage and (CU)Bethany, at the mountain called (CV)Olivet, that He sent two of His disciples, 30 saying, “Go into the village opposite you, where as you enter you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat. Loose it and bring it here. 31 And if anyone asks you, ‘Why are you loosing it?’ thus you shall say to him, ‘Because the Lord has need of it.’ ”

32 So those who were sent went their way and found it just (CW)as He had said to them. 33 But as they were loosing the colt, the owners of it said to them, “Why are you loosing the colt?”

34 And they said, “The Lord has need of him.” 35 Then they brought him to Jesus. (CX)And they threw their own clothes on the colt, and they set Jesus on him. 36 And as He went, many spread their clothes on the road.

37 Then, as He was now drawing near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to (CY)rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen, 38 saying:

(CZ)‘Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!’
(DA)Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”

39 And some of the Pharisees called to Him from the crowd, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.”

40 But He answered and said to them, “I tell you that if these should keep silent, (DB)the stones would immediately cry out.”

Jesus Weeps over Jerusalem

41 Now as He drew near, He saw the city and (DC)wept over it, 42 saying, “If you had known, even you, especially in this (DD)your day, the things that (DE)make for your (DF)peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. 43 For days will come upon you when your enemies will (DG)build an embankment around you, surround you and close you in on every side, 44 (DH)and level you, and your children within you, to the ground; and (DI)they will not leave in you one stone upon another, (DJ)because you did not know the time of your visitation.”

Jesus Cleanses the Temple(DK)

45 (DL)Then He went into the temple and began to drive out those who [y]bought and sold in it, 46 saying to them, “It is written, (DM)‘My house [z]is a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a (DN)‘den of thieves.’

47 And He (DO)was teaching daily in the temple. But (DP)the chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people sought to destroy Him, 48 and were unable to do anything; for all the people were very attentive to (DQ)hear Him.

Jesus’ Authority Questioned(DR)

20 Now (DS)it happened on one of those days, as He taught the people in the temple and preached the gospel, that the chief priests and the scribes, together with the elders, confronted Him and spoke to Him, saying, “Tell us, (DT)by what authority are You doing these things? Or who is he who gave You this authority?”

But He answered and said to them, “I also will ask you one thing, and answer Me: The (DU)baptism of John—was it from heaven or from men?”

And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Why [aa]then did you not believe him?’ But if we say, ‘From men,’ all the people will stone us, (DV)for they are persuaded that John was a prophet.” So they answered that they did not know where it was from.

And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

The Parable of the Wicked Vinedressers(DW)

Then He began to tell the people this parable: (DX)“A certain man planted a vineyard, leased it to [ab]vinedressers, and went into a far country for a long time. 10 Now at [ac]vintage-time he (DY)sent a servant to the vinedressers, that they might give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the vinedressers beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 11 Again he sent another servant; and they beat him also, treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed. 12 And again he sent a third; and they wounded him also and cast him out.

13 “Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my beloved son. Probably they will respect him when they see him.’ 14 But when the vinedressers saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, ‘This is the (DZ)heir. Come, (EA)let us kill him, that the inheritance may be (EB)ours.’ 15 So they cast him out of the vineyard and (EC)killed him. Therefore what will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16 He will come and destroy those vinedressers and give the vineyard to (ED)others.”

And when they heard it they said, “Certainly not!”

17 Then He looked at them and said, “What then is this that is written:

(EE)‘The stone which the builders rejected
Has become the chief cornerstone’?

18 Whoever falls on that stone will be (EF)broken; but (EG)on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.”

19 And the chief priests and the scribes that very hour sought to lay hands on Him, but they [ad]feared the people—for they knew He had spoken this parable against them.

The Pharisees: Is It Lawful to Pay Taxes to Caesar?(EH)

20 (EI)So they watched Him, and sent spies who pretended to be righteous, that they might seize on His words, in order to deliver Him to the power and the authority of the governor.

21 Then they asked Him, saying, (EJ)“Teacher, we know that You say and teach rightly, and You do not show personal favoritism, but teach the way of God in truth: 22 Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”

23 But He perceived their craftiness, and said to them, [ae]“Why do you test Me? 24 Show Me a denarius. Whose image and inscription does it have?”

They answered and said, “Caesar’s.”

25 And He said to them, (EK)“Render[af] therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”

26 But they could not catch Him in His words in the presence of the people. And they marveled at His answer and kept silent.

The Sadducees: What About the Resurrection?(EL)

27 (EM)Then some of the Sadducees, (EN)who deny that there is a resurrection, came to Him and asked Him, 28 saying: “Teacher, Moses wrote to us that if a man’s brother dies, having a wife, and he dies without children, his brother should take his wife and raise up offspring for his brother. 29 Now there were seven brothers. And the first took a wife, and died without children. 30 And the second [ag]took her as wife, and he died childless. 31 Then the third took her, and in like manner the seven [ah]also; and they left no children, and died. 32 Last of all the woman died also. 33 Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife does she become? For all seven had her as wife.”

34 Jesus answered and said to them, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage. 35 But those who are (EO)counted worthy to attain that age, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; 36 nor can they die anymore, for (EP)they are equal to the angels and are sons of God, (EQ)being sons of the resurrection. 37 But even Moses showed in the burning bush passage that the dead are raised, when he called the Lord (ER)‘the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ 38 For He is not the God of the dead but of the living, for (ES)all live to Him.”

39 Then some of the scribes answered and said, “Teacher, You have spoken well.” 40 But after that they dared not question Him anymore.

Jesus: How Can David Call His Descendant Lord?(ET)

41 And He said to them, (EU)“How can they say that the Christ is the Son of David? 42 Now David himself said in the Book of Psalms:

(EV)‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at My right hand,
43 Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” ’

44 Therefore David calls Him ‘Lord’; (EW)how is He then his Son?”

Beware of the Scribes(EX)

45 (EY)Then, in the hearing of all the people, He said to His disciples, 46 (EZ)“Beware of the scribes, who desire to go around in long robes, (FA)love greetings in the marketplaces, the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts, 47 (FB)who devour widows’ houses, and for a (FC)pretense make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation.”

The Widow’s Two Mites(FD)

21 And He looked up (FE)and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury, and He saw also a certain (FF)poor widow putting in two (FG)mites.[ai] So He said, “Truly I say to you (FH)that this poor widow has put in more than all; for all these out of their abundance have put in offerings [aj]for God, but she out of her poverty put in (FI)all the livelihood that she had.”

Jesus Predicts the Destruction of the Temple(FJ)

(FK)Then, as some spoke of the temple, how it was [ak]adorned with beautiful stones and donations, He said, “These things which you see—the days will come in which (FL)not one stone shall be left upon another that shall not be thrown down.”

The Signs of the Times and the End of the Age(FM)

So they asked Him, saying, “Teacher, but when will these things be? And what sign will there be when these things are about to take place?”

And He said: (FN)“Take heed that you not be deceived. For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He,’ and, ‘The time has drawn near.’ [al]Therefore do not [am]go after them. But when you hear of (FO)wars and commotions, do not be terrified; for these things must come to pass first, but the end will not come immediately.”

10 (FP)Then He said to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. 11 And there will be great (FQ)earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven. 12 (FR)But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and (FS)prisons. (FT)You will be brought before kings and rulers (FU)for My name’s sake. 13 But (FV)it will turn out for you as an occasion for testimony. 14 (FW)Therefore settle it in your hearts not to meditate beforehand on what you will [an]answer; 15 for I will give you a mouth and wisdom (FX)which all your adversaries will not be able to contradict or [ao]resist. 16 (FY)You will be betrayed even by parents and brothers, relatives and friends; and they will put (FZ)some of you to death. 17 And (GA)you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. 18 (GB)But not a hair of your head shall be lost. 19 By your patience possess your souls.

The Destruction of Jerusalem(GC)

20 (GD)“But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation is near. 21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those who are in the midst of her depart, and let not those who are in the country enter her. 22 For these are the days of vengeance, that (GE)all things which are written may be fulfilled. 23 (GF)But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! For there will be great distress in the land and wrath upon this people. 24 And they will fall by the edge of the sword, and be led away captive into all nations. And Jerusalem will be trampled by Gentiles (GG)until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

The Coming of the Son of Man(GH)

25 (GI)“And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; 26 men’s hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, (GJ)for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27 Then they will see the Son of Man (GK)coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because (GL)your redemption draws near.”

The Parable of the Fig Tree(GM)

29 (GN)Then He spoke to them a parable: “Look at the fig tree, and all the trees. 30 When they are already budding, you see and know for yourselves that summer is now near. 31 So you also, when you see these things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near. 32 Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all things take place. 33 (GO)Heaven and earth will pass away, but My (GP)words will by no means pass away.

The Importance of Watching(GQ)

34 “But (GR)take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with [ap]carousing, drunkenness, and (GS)cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly. 35 For (GT)it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 (GU)Watch therefore, and (GV)pray always that you may [aq]be counted (GW)worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and (GX)to stand before the Son of Man.”

37 (GY)And in the daytime He was teaching in the temple, but (GZ)at night He went out and stayed on the mountain called Olivet. 38 Then early in the morning all the people came to Him in the temple to hear Him.

The Plot to Kill Jesus(HA)

22 Now (HB)the Feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called Passover. And (HC)the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might kill Him, for they feared the people.

(HD)Then Satan entered Judas, surnamed Iscariot, who was numbered among the (HE)twelve. So he went his way and conferred with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray Him to them. And they were glad, and (HF)agreed to give him money. So he promised and sought opportunity to (HG)betray Him to them in the absence of the multitude.

Jesus and His Disciples Prepare the Passover

(HH)Then came the Day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover must be [ar]killed. And He sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat.”

So they said to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare?”

10 And He said to them, “Behold, when you have entered the city, a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house which he enters. 11 Then you shall say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?” ’ 12 Then he will show you a large, furnished upper room; there make ready.”

13 So they went and (HI)found it just as He had said to them, and they prepared the Passover.

Jesus Institutes the Lord’s Supper

14 (HJ)When the hour had come, He sat down, and the [as]twelve apostles with Him. 15 Then He said to them, “With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; 16 for I say to you, I will no longer eat of it (HK)until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”

17 Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves; 18 for (HL)I say to you, [at]I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”

19 (HM)And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My (HN)body which is given for you; (HO)do this in remembrance of Me.”

20 Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, (HP)“This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you. 21 (HQ)But behold, the hand of My betrayer is with Me on the table. 22 (HR)And truly the Son of Man goes (HS)as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!”

23 (HT)Then they began to question among themselves, which of them it was who would do this thing.

The Disciples Argue About Greatness

24 (HU)Now there was also a dispute among them, as to which of them should be considered the greatest. 25 (HV)And He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called ‘benefactors.’ 26 (HW)But not so among you; on the contrary, (HX)he who is greatest among you, let him be as the younger, and he who governs as he who serves. 27 (HY)For who is greater, he who sits at the table, or he who serves? Is it not he who sits at the table? Yet (HZ)I am among you as the One who serves.

28 “But you are those who have continued with Me in (IA)My trials. 29 And (IB)I bestow upon you a kingdom, just as My Father bestowed one upon Me, 30 that (IC)you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, (ID)and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.”

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(IE)

31 [au]And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, (IF)Satan has asked for you, that he may (IG)sift you as wheat. 32 But (IH)I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, (II)strengthen your brethren.”

33 But he said to Him, “Lord, I am ready to go with You, both to prison and to death.”

34 (IJ)Then He said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster shall not crow this day before you will deny three times that you know Me.”

Supplies for the Road

35 (IK)And He said to them, “When I sent you without money bag, knapsack, and sandals, did you lack anything?”

So they said, “Nothing.”

36 Then He said to them, “But now, he who has a money bag, let him take it, and likewise a knapsack; and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one. 37 For I say to you that this which is written must still be [av]accomplished in Me: (IL)‘And He was numbered with the transgressors.’ For the things concerning Me have an end.”

38 So they said, “Lord, look, here are two swords.”

And He said to them, “It is enough.”

The Prayer in the Garden(IM)

39 (IN)Coming out, (IO)He went to the Mount of Olives, as He was accustomed, and His disciples also followed Him. 40 (IP)When He came to the place, He said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.”

41 (IQ)And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless (IR)not My will, but Yours, be done.” 43 [aw]Then (IS)an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. 44 (IT)And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

45 When He rose up from prayer, and had come to His disciples, He found them sleeping from sorrow. 46 Then He said to them, “Why (IU)do you sleep? Rise and (IV)pray, lest you enter into temptation.”

Betrayal and Arrest in Gethsemane(IW)

47 And while He was still speaking, (IX)behold, a multitude; and he who was called (IY)Judas, one of the twelve, went before them and drew near to Jesus to kiss Him. 48 But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a (IZ)kiss?”

49 When those around Him saw what was going to happen, they said to Him, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?” 50 And (JA)one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear.

51 But Jesus answered and said, “Permit even this.” And He touched his ear and healed him.

52 (JB)Then Jesus said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and the elders who had come to Him, “Have you come out, as against a (JC)robber, with swords and clubs? 53 When I was with you daily in the (JD)temple, you did not try to seize Me. But this is your (JE)hour, and the power of darkness.”

Peter Denies Jesus, and Weeps Bitterly(JF)

54 (JG)Having arrested Him, they led Him and brought Him into the high priest’s house. (JH)But Peter followed at a distance. 55 (JI)Now when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them. 56 And a certain servant girl, seeing him as he sat by the fire, looked intently at him and said, “This man was also with Him.”

57 But he denied [ax]Him, saying, “Woman, I do not know Him.”

58 (JJ)And after a little while another saw him and said, “You also are of them.”

But Peter said, “Man, I am not!”

59 (JK)Then after about an hour had passed, another confidently affirmed, saying, “Surely this fellow also was with Him, for he is a (JL)Galilean.”

60 But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are saying!”

Immediately, while he was still speaking, [ay]the rooster crowed. 61 And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then (JM)Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, (JN)“Before the rooster [az]crows, you will deny Me three times.” 62 So Peter went out and wept bitterly.

Jesus Mocked and Beaten(JO)

63 (JP)Now the men who held Jesus mocked Him and (JQ)beat Him. 64 [ba]And having blindfolded Him, they (JR)struck Him on the face and asked Him, saying, “Prophesy! Who is the one who struck You?” 65 And many other things they blasphemously spoke against Him.

Jesus Faces the Sanhedrin(JS)

66 (JT)As soon as it was day, (JU)the elders of the people, both chief priests and scribes, came together and led Him into their council, saying, 67 (JV)“If You are the Christ, tell us.”

But He said to them, “If I tell you, you will (JW)by no means believe. 68 And if I [bb]also ask you, you will by no means answer [bc]Me or let Me go. 69 (JX)Hereafter the Son of Man will sit on the right hand of the power of God.”

70 Then they all said, “Are You then the Son of God?”

So He said to them, (JY)“You rightly say that I am.”

71 (JZ)And they said, “What further testimony do we need? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth.”

Jesus Handed Over to Pontius Pilate(KA)

23 Then (KB)the whole multitude of them arose and led Him to (KC)Pilate. And they began to (KD)accuse Him, saying, “We found this fellow (KE)perverting [bd]the nation, and (KF)forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, saying (KG)that He Himself is Christ, a King.”

(KH)Then Pilate asked Him, saying, “Are You the King of the Jews?”

He answered him and said, It is as you say.”

So Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowd, (KI)“I find no fault in this Man.”

But they were the more fierce, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from (KJ)Galilee to this place.”

Jesus Faces Herod

When Pilate heard [be]of Galilee, he asked if the Man were a Galilean. And as soon as he knew that He belonged to (KK)Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time. Now when Herod saw Jesus, (KL)he was exceedingly glad; for he had desired for a long time to see Him, because (KM)he had heard many things about Him, and he hoped to see some miracle done by Him. Then he questioned Him with many words, but He answered him (KN)nothing. 10 And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused Him. 11 (KO)Then Herod, with his [bf]men of war, treated Him with contempt and mocked Him, arrayed Him in a gorgeous robe, and sent Him back to Pilate. 12 That very day (KP)Pilate and Herod became friends with each other, for previously they had been at enmity with each other.

Taking the Place of Barabbas(KQ)

13 (KR)Then Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests, the rulers, and the people, 14 said to them, (KS)“You have brought this Man to me, as one who misleads the people. And indeed, (KT)having examined Him in your presence, I have found no fault in this Man concerning those things of which you accuse Him; 15 no, neither did Herod, for [bg]I sent you back to him; and indeed nothing deserving of death has been done by Him. 16 (KU)I will therefore chastise Him and release Him 17 (KV)(for[bh] it was necessary for him to release one to them at the feast).

18 And (KW)they all cried out at once, saying, “Away with this Man, and release to us Barabbas”— 19 who had been thrown into prison for a certain rebellion made in the city, and for murder.

20 Pilate, therefore, wishing to release Jesus, again called out to them. 21 But they shouted, saying, “Crucify Him, crucify Him!”

22 Then he said to them the third time, “Why, what evil has He done? I have found no reason for death in Him. I will therefore chastise Him and let Him go.”

23 But they were insistent, demanding with loud voices that He be crucified. And the voices of these men [bi]and of the chief priests prevailed. 24 So (KX)Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they requested. 25 (KY)And he released [bj]to them the one they requested, who for rebellion and murder had been thrown into prison; but he delivered Jesus to their will.

The King on a Cross(KZ)

26 (LA)Now as they led Him away, they laid hold of a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, who was coming from the country, and on him they laid the cross that he might bear it after Jesus.

27 And a great multitude of the people followed Him, and women who also mourned and lamented Him. 28 But Jesus, turning to them, said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29 (LB)For indeed the days are coming in which they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren, wombs that never bore, and breasts which never nursed!’ 30 Then they will begin (LC)‘to say to the mountains, “Fall on us!” and to the hills, “Cover us!” ’ 31 (LD)For if they do these things in the green wood, what will be done in the dry?”

32 (LE)There were also two others, criminals, led with Him to be put to death. 33 And (LF)when they had come to the place called Calvary, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right hand and the other on the left. 34 [bk]Then Jesus said, “Father, (LG)forgive them, for (LH)they do not know what they do.”

And (LI)they divided His garments and cast lots. 35 And (LJ)the people stood looking on. But even the (LK)rulers with them sneered, saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ, the chosen of God.”

36 The soldiers also mocked Him, coming and offering Him (LL)sour wine, 37 and saying, “If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself.”

38 (LM)And an inscription also was [bl]written over Him in letters of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew:

THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

39 (LN)Then one of the criminals who were hanged blasphemed Him, saying, [bm]“If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us.”

40 But the other, answering, rebuked him, saying, “Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation? 41 And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done (LO)nothing wrong.” 42 Then he said [bn]to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.”

43 And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in (LP)Paradise.”

Jesus Dies on the Cross(LQ)

44 (LR)Now it [bo]was about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. 45 Then the sun was [bp]darkened, and (LS)the veil of the temple was torn in [bq]two. 46 And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, “Father, (LT)‘into Your hands I commit My spirit.’ (LU)Having said this, He breathed His last.

47 (LV)So when the centurion saw what had happened, he glorified God, saying, “Certainly this was a righteous Man!”

48 And the whole crowd who came together to that sight, seeing what had been done, beat their breasts and returned. 49 (LW)But all His acquaintances, and the women who followed Him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things.

Jesus Buried in Joseph’s Tomb(LX)

50 (LY)Now behold, there was a man named Joseph, a council member, a good and just man. 51 He had not consented to their decision and deed. He was from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, (LZ)who[br] himself was also waiting for the kingdom of God. 52 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 53 (MA)Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a tomb that was hewn out of the rock, where no one had ever lain before. 54 That day was (MB)the Preparation, and the Sabbath drew near.

55 And the women (MC)who had come with Him from Galilee followed after, and (MD)they observed the tomb and how His body was laid. 56 Then they returned and (ME)prepared spices and fragrant oils. And they rested on the Sabbath (MF)according to the commandment.

He Is Risen(MG)

24 Now (MH)on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they, [bs]and certain other women with them, came to the tomb (MI)bringing the spices which they had prepared. (MJ)But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb. (MK)Then they went in and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. And it happened, as they were [bt]greatly perplexed about this, that (ML)behold, two men stood by them in shining garments. Then, as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the earth, they said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen! (MM)Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, saying, ‘The Son of Man must be (MN)delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.’

And (MO)they remembered His words. (MP)Then they returned from the tomb and told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. 10 It was Mary Magdalene, (MQ)Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them, who told these things to the apostles. 11 (MR)And their words seemed to them like [bu]idle tales, and they did not believe them. 12 (MS)But Peter arose and ran to the tomb; and stooping down, he saw the linen cloths [bv]lying by themselves; and he departed, marveling to himself at what had happened.

The Road to Emmaus(MT)

13 (MU)Now behold, two of them were traveling that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was [bw]seven miles from Jerusalem. 14 And they talked together of all these things which had happened. 15 So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that (MV)Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. 16 But (MW)their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him.

17 And He said to them, “What kind of conversation is this that you have with one another as you [bx]walk and are sad?”

18 Then the one (MX)whose name was Cleopas answered and said to Him, “Are You the only stranger in Jerusalem, and have You not known the things which happened there in these days?”

19 And He said to them, “What things?”

So they said to Him, “The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, (MY)who was a Prophet (MZ)mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20 (NA)and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to be condemned to death, and crucified Him. 21 But we were hoping (NB)that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened. 22 Yes, and (NC)certain women of our company, who arrived at the tomb early, astonished us. 23 When they did not find His body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said He was alive. 24 And (ND)certain of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but Him they did not see.”

25 Then He said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! 26 (NE)Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His (NF)glory?” 27 And beginning at (NG)Moses and (NH)all the Prophets, He [by]expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.

The Disciples’ Eyes Opened

28 Then they drew near to the village where they were going, and (NI)He [bz]indicated that He would have gone farther. 29 But (NJ)they constrained Him, saying, (NK)“Abide with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent.” And He went in to stay with them.

30 Now it came to pass, as (NL)He sat at the table with them, that He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight.

32 And they said to one another, “Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?” 33 So they rose up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, 34 saying, “The Lord is risen indeed, and (NM)has appeared to Simon!” 35 And they told about the things that had happened on the road, and how He was [ca]known to them in the breaking of bread.

Jesus Appears to His Disciples(NN)

36 (NO)Now as they said these things, Jesus Himself stood in the midst of them, and said to them, “Peace to you.” 37 But they were terrified and frightened, and supposed they had seen (NP)a spirit. 38 And He said to them, “Why are you troubled? And why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39 Behold My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself. (NQ)Handle Me and see, for a (NR)spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see I have.”

40 [cb]When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet. 41 But while they still did not believe (NS)for joy, and marveled, He said to them, (NT)“Have you any food here?” 42 So they gave Him a piece of a broiled fish [cc]and some honeycomb. 43 (NU)And He took it and ate in their presence.

The Scriptures Opened

44 Then He said to them, (NV)“These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.” 45 And (NW)He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures.

46 Then He said to them, (NX)“Thus it is written, [cd]and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, 47 and that repentance and (NY)remission of sins should be preached in His name (NZ)to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 And (OA)you are witnesses of these things. 49 (OB)Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city [ce]of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.”

The Ascension(OC)

50 And He led them out (OD)as far as Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them. 51 (OE)Now it came to pass, while He blessed them, that He was parted from them and carried up into heaven. 52 (OF)And they worshiped Him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53 and were continually (OG)in the temple [cf]praising and blessing God. [cg]Amen.

29 “Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses(A) and the Prophets;(B) let them listen to them.’

31 “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’”

Sin, Faith, Duty

17 Jesus said to his disciples: “Things that cause people to stumble(D) are bound to come, but woe to anyone through whom they come.(E) It would be better for them to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around their neck than to cause one of these little ones(F) to stumble.(G) So watch yourselves.

“If your brother or sister[a] sins against you, rebuke them;(H) and if they repent, forgive them.(I) Even if they sin against you seven times in a day and seven times come back to you saying ‘I repent,’ you must forgive them.”(J)

The apostles(K) said to the Lord,(L) “Increase our faith!”

He replied, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed,(M) you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you.(N)

“Suppose one of you has a servant plowing or looking after the sheep. Will he say to the servant when he comes in from the field, ‘Come along now and sit down to eat’? Won’t he rather say, ‘Prepare my supper, get yourself ready and wait on me(O) while I eat and drink; after that you may eat and drink’? Will he thank the servant because he did what he was told to do? 10 So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.’”(P)

Jesus Heals Ten Men With Leprosy

11 Now on his way to Jerusalem,(Q) Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee.(R) 12 As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy[b](S) met him. They stood at a distance(T) 13 and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master,(U) have pity on us!”

14 When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.”(V) And as they went, they were cleansed.

15 One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God(W) in a loud voice. 16 He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan.(X)

17 Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? 18 Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?” 19 Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.”(Y)

The Coming of the Kingdom of God(Z)

20 Once, on being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come,(AA) Jesus replied, “The coming of the kingdom of God is not something that can be observed, 21 nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’(AB) because the kingdom of God is in your midst.”[c]

22 Then he said to his disciples, “The time is coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man,(AC) but you will not see it.(AD) 23 People will tell you, ‘There he is!’ or ‘Here he is!’ Do not go running off after them.(AE) 24 For the Son of Man in his day[d] will be like the lightning,(AF) which flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other. 25 But first he must suffer many things(AG) and be rejected(AH) by this generation.(AI)

26 “Just as it was in the days of Noah,(AJ) so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man. 27 People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all.

28 “It was the same in the days of Lot.(AK) People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building. 29 But the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all.

30 “It will be just like this on the day the Son of Man is revealed.(AL) 31 On that day no one who is on the housetop, with possessions inside, should go down to get them. Likewise, no one in the field should go back for anything.(AM) 32 Remember Lot’s wife!(AN) 33 Whoever tries to keep their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life will preserve it.(AO) 34 I tell you, on that night two people will be in one bed; one will be taken and the other left. 35 Two women will be grinding grain together; one will be taken and the other left.”(AP) [36] [e]

37 “Where, Lord?” they asked.

He replied, “Where there is a dead body, there the vultures will gather.”(AQ)

The Parable of the Persistent Widow

18 Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.(AR) He said: “In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared what people thought. And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, ‘Grant me justice(AS) against my adversary.’

“For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or care what people think, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won’t eventually come and attack me!’”(AT)

And the Lord(AU) said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says. And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out(AV) to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man(AW) comes,(AX) will he find faith on the earth?”

The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector

To some who were confident of their own righteousness(AY) and looked down on everyone else,(AZ) Jesus told this parable: 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray,(BA) one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood by himself(BB) and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast(BC) twice a week and give a tenth(BD) of all I get.’

13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast(BE) and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’(BF)

14 “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”(BG)

The Little Children and Jesus(BH)

15 People were also bringing babies to Jesus for him to place his hands on them. When the disciples saw this, they rebuked them. 16 But Jesus called the children to him and said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 17 Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child(BI) will never enter it.”

The Rich and the Kingdom of God(BJ)

18 A certain ruler asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”(BK)

19 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. 20 You know the commandments: ‘You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.’[f](BL)

21 “All these I have kept since I was a boy,” he said.

22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor,(BM) and you will have treasure in heaven.(BN) Then come, follow me.”

23 When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was very wealthy. 24 Jesus looked at him and said, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!(BO) 25 Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”

26 Those who heard this asked, “Who then can be saved?”

27 Jesus replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.”(BP)

28 Peter said to him, “We have left all we had to follow you!”(BQ)

29 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus said to them, “no one who has left home or wife or brothers or sisters or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God 30 will fail to receive many times as much in this age, and in the age to come(BR) eternal life.”(BS)

Jesus Predicts His Death a Third Time(BT)

31 Jesus took the Twelve aside and told them, “We are going up to Jerusalem,(BU) and everything that is written by the prophets(BV) about the Son of Man(BW) will be fulfilled. 32 He will be delivered over to the Gentiles.(BX) They will mock him, insult him and spit on him; 33 they will flog him(BY) and kill him.(BZ) On the third day(CA) he will rise again.”(CB)

34 The disciples did not understand any of this. Its meaning was hidden from them, and they did not know what he was talking about.(CC)

A Blind Beggar Receives His Sight(CD)

35 As Jesus approached Jericho,(CE) a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. 36 When he heard the crowd going by, he asked what was happening. 37 They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.”(CF)

38 He called out, “Jesus, Son of David,(CG) have mercy(CH) on me!”

39 Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”(CI)

40 Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him. When he came near, Jesus asked him, 41 “What do you want me to do for you?”

“Lord, I want to see,” he replied.

42 Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has healed you.”(CJ) 43 Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus, praising God. When all the people saw it, they also praised God.(CK)

Zacchaeus the Tax Collector

19 Jesus entered Jericho(CL) and was passing through. A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig(CM) tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way.(CN)

When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.

All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.”(CO)

But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord,(CP) “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything,(CQ) I will pay back four times the amount.”(CR)

Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham.(CS) 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”(CT)

The Parable of the Ten Minas(CU)

11 While they were listening to this, he went on to tell them a parable, because he was near Jerusalem and the people thought that the kingdom of God(CV) was going to appear at once.(CW) 12 He said: “A man of noble birth went to a distant country to have himself appointed king and then to return. 13 So he called ten of his servants(CX) and gave them ten minas.[g] ‘Put this money to work,’ he said, ‘until I come back.’

14 “But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, ‘We don’t want this man to be our king.’

15 “He was made king, however, and returned home. Then he sent for the servants to whom he had given the money, in order to find out what they had gained with it.

16 “The first one came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned ten more.’

17 “‘Well done, my good servant!’(CY) his master replied. ‘Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.’(CZ)

18 “The second came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned five more.’

19 “His master answered, ‘You take charge of five cities.’

20 “Then another servant came and said, ‘Sir, here is your mina; I have kept it laid away in a piece of cloth. 21 I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take out what you did not put in and reap what you did not sow.’(DA)

22 “His master replied, ‘I will judge you by your own words,(DB) you wicked servant! You knew, did you, that I am a hard man, taking out what I did not put in, and reaping what I did not sow?(DC) 23 Why then didn’t you put my money on deposit, so that when I came back, I could have collected it with interest?’

24 “Then he said to those standing by, ‘Take his mina away from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.’

25 “‘Sir,’ they said, ‘he already has ten!’

26 “He replied, ‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what they have will be taken away.(DD) 27 But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them—bring them here and kill them in front of me.’”

Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King(DE)(DF)

28 After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.(DG) 29 As he approached Bethphage and Bethany(DH) at the hill called the Mount of Olives,(DI) he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, 30 “Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it.’”

32 Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them.(DJ) 33 As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?”

34 They replied, “The Lord needs it.”

35 They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it. 36 As he went along, people spread their cloaks(DK) on the road.

37 When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives,(DL) the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen:

38 “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!”[h](DM)

“Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”(DN)

39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!”(DO)

40 “I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”(DP)

41 As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it(DQ) 42 and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. 43 The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side.(DR) 44 They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls.(DS) They will not leave one stone on another,(DT) because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming(DU) to you.”

Jesus at the Temple(DV)

45 When Jesus entered the temple courts, he began to drive out those who were selling. 46 “It is written,” he said to them, “‘My house will be a house of prayer’[i];(DW) but you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’[j](DX)

47 Every day he was teaching at the temple.(DY) But the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the leaders among the people were trying to kill him.(DZ) 48 Yet they could not find any way to do it, because all the people hung on his words.

The Authority of Jesus Questioned(EA)

20 One day as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple courts(EB) and proclaiming the good news,(EC) the chief priests and the teachers of the law, together with the elders, came up to him. “Tell us by what authority you are doing these things,” they said. “Who gave you this authority?”(ED)

He replied, “I will also ask you a question. Tell me: John’s baptism(EE)—was it from heaven, or of human origin?”

They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Why didn’t you believe him?’ But if we say, ‘Of human origin,’ all the people(EF) will stone us, because they are persuaded that John was a prophet.”(EG)

So they answered, “We don’t know where it was from.”

Jesus said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”

The Parable of the Tenants(EH)

He went on to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard,(EI) rented it to some farmers and went away for a long time.(EJ) 10 At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants so they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 11 He sent another servant, but that one also they beat and treated shamefully and sent away empty-handed. 12 He sent still a third, and they wounded him and threw him out.

13 “Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my son, whom I love;(EK) perhaps they will respect him.’

14 “But when the tenants saw him, they talked the matter over. ‘This is the heir,’ they said. ‘Let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ 15 So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.

“What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16 He will come and kill those tenants(EL) and give the vineyard to others.”

When the people heard this, they said, “God forbid!”

17 Jesus looked directly at them and asked, “Then what is the meaning of that which is written:

“‘The stone the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone’[k]?(EM)

18 Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed.”(EN)

19 The teachers of the law and the chief priests looked for a way to arrest him(EO) immediately, because they knew he had spoken this parable against them. But they were afraid of the people.(EP)

Paying Taxes to Caesar(EQ)

20 Keeping a close watch on him, they sent spies, who pretended to be sincere. They hoped to catch Jesus in something he said,(ER) so that they might hand him over to the power and authority of the governor.(ES) 21 So the spies questioned him: “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach what is right, and that you do not show partiality but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth.(ET) 22 Is it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”

23 He saw through their duplicity and said to them, 24 “Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription are on it?”

“Caesar’s,” they replied.

25 He said to them, “Then give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s,(EU) and to God what is God’s.”

26 They were unable to trap him in what he had said there in public. And astonished by his answer, they became silent.

The Resurrection and Marriage(EV)

27 Some of the Sadducees,(EW) who say there is no resurrection,(EX) came to Jesus with a question. 28 “Teacher,” they said, “Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.(EY) 29 Now there were seven brothers. The first one married a woman and died childless. 30 The second 31 and then the third married her, and in the same way the seven died, leaving no children. 32 Finally, the woman died too. 33 Now then, at the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?”

34 Jesus replied, “The people of this age marry and are given in marriage. 35 But those who are considered worthy of taking part in the age to come(EZ) and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage, 36 and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God’s children,(FA) since they are children of the resurrection. 37 But in the account of the burning bush, even Moses showed that the dead rise, for he calls the Lord ‘the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’[l](FB) 38 He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.”

39 Some of the teachers of the law responded, “Well said, teacher!” 40 And no one dared to ask him any more questions.(FC)

Whose Son Is the Messiah?(FD)

41 Then Jesus said to them, “Why is it said that the Messiah is the son of David?(FE) 42 David himself declares in the Book of Psalms:

“‘The Lord said to my Lord:
    “Sit at my right hand
43 until I make your enemies
    a footstool for your feet.”’[m](FF)

44 David calls him ‘Lord.’ How then can he be his son?”

Warning Against the Teachers of the Law

45 While all the people were listening, Jesus said to his disciples, 46 “Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.(FG) 47 They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.”

The Widow’s Offering(FH)

21 As Jesus looked up, he saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury.(FI) He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. “Truly I tell you,” he said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others. All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.”(FJ)

The Destruction of the Temple and Signs of the End Times(FK)(FL)

Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God. But Jesus said, “As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another;(FM) every one of them will be thrown down.”

“Teacher,” they asked, “when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?”

He replied: “Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ Do not follow them.(FN) When you hear of wars and uprisings, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.”

10 Then he said to them: “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.(FO) 11 There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.(FP)

12 “But before all this, they will seize you and persecute you. They will hand you over to synagogues and put you in prison, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name. 13 And so you will bear testimony to me.(FQ) 14 But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves.(FR) 15 For I will give you(FS) words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict. 16 You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers and sisters, relatives and friends,(FT) and they will put some of you to death. 17 Everyone will hate you because of me.(FU) 18 But not a hair of your head will perish.(FV) 19 Stand firm, and you will win life.(FW)

20 “When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies,(FX) you will know that its desolation is near. 21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city.(FY) 22 For this is the time of punishment(FZ) in fulfillment(GA) of all that has been written. 23 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people. 24 They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled(GB) on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

25 “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea.(GC) 26 People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken.(GD) 27 At that time they will see the Son of Man(GE) coming in a cloud(GF) with power and great glory. 28 When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”(GG)

29 He told them this parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees. 30 When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near. 31 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God(GH) is near.

32 “Truly I tell you, this generation(GI) will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.(GJ)

34 “Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life,(GK) and that day will close on you suddenly(GL) like a trap. 35 For it will come on all those who live on the face of the whole earth. 36 Be always on the watch, and pray(GM) that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.”

37 Each day Jesus was teaching at the temple,(GN) and each evening he went out(GO) to spend the night on the hill called the Mount of Olives,(GP) 38 and all the people came early in the morning to hear him at the temple.(GQ)

Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus(GR)

22 Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching,(GS) and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus,(GT) for they were afraid of the people. Then Satan(GU) entered Judas, called Iscariot,(GV) one of the Twelve. And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard(GW) and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. They were delighted and agreed to give him money.(GX) He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present.

The Last Supper(GY)(GZ)(HA)(HB)(HC)

Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.(HD) Jesus sent Peter and John,(HE) saying, “Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover.”

“Where do you want us to prepare for it?” they asked.

10 He replied, “As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, 11 and say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 12 He will show you a large room upstairs, all furnished. Make preparations there.”

13 They left and found things just as Jesus had told them.(HF) So they prepared the Passover.

14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles(HG) reclined at the table.(HH) 15 And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.(HI) 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.”(HJ)

17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you. 18 For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”

19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it,(HK) and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”

20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant(HL) in my blood, which is poured out for you.[n] 21 But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table.(HM) 22 The Son of Man(HN) will go as it has been decreed.(HO) But woe to that man who betrays him!” 23 They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this.

24 A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest.(HP) 25 Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. 26 But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest,(HQ) and the one who rules like the one who serves.(HR) 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.(HS) 28 You are those who have stood by me in my trials. 29 And I confer on you a kingdom,(HT) just as my Father conferred one on me, 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom(HU) and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.(HV)

31 “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked(HW) to sift all of you as wheat.(HX) 32 But I have prayed for you,(HY) Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”(HZ)

33 But he replied, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.”(IA)

34 Jesus answered, “I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.”
