Call to Repent

13 Now on that very occasion there were some present who reported to Him about the Galileans whose blood (A)Pilate had [a]mixed with their sacrifices. And Jesus responded and said to them, (B)Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans just because they have suffered this fate? No, I tell you, but unless you [b]repent, you will all likewise perish. Or do you think that those eighteen on whom the tower in (C)Siloam fell and killed them were worse [c](D)offenders than all the other people who live in Jerusalem? No, I tell you, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.”

And He began telling this parable: “A man had (E)a fig tree which had been planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and did not find any. And he said to the vineyard-keeper, ‘Look! For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree [d]without finding any. (F)Cut it down! Why does it even use up the ground?’ But he answered and said to him, ‘Sir, leave it alone for this year too, until I dig around it and put in fertilizer; and if it bears fruit next year, fine; but if not, cut it down.’”

Healing on the Sabbath

10 Now Jesus was (G)teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. 11 And [e]there was a woman who for eighteen years had had (H)a [f]sickness caused by a spirit; and she was bent over double, and could not straighten up at all. 12 When Jesus saw her, He called her over and said to her, “Woman, you are freed from your sickness.” 13 And He (I)laid His hands on her; and immediately she stood up straight again, and began (J)glorifying God. 14 But (K)the synagogue leader, indignant because Jesus (L)had healed on the Sabbath, began saying to the crowd in response, “(M)There are six days during which work should be done; so come during them and get healed, and not on the Sabbath day.” 15 But (N)the Lord answered him and said, “You hypocrites, (O)does each of you on the Sabbath not untie his ox or donkey from the stall and lead it away to water it? 16 And this woman, (P)a daughter of Abraham as she is, whom (Q)Satan has bound for [g]eighteen long years, should she not have been released from this restraint on the Sabbath day?” 17 And as He said this, all His opponents were being [h]humiliated; and (R)the entire crowd was rejoicing over all the glorious things being done by Him.

Parables of Mustard Seed and Leaven

18 So (S)He was saying, (T)What is the kingdom of God like, and to what shall I compare it? 19 It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and threw into his own garden; and it grew and became a tree, and (U)the birds of the sky nested in its branches.”

20 And again He said, (V)To what shall I compare the kingdom of God? 21 (W)It is like [i]leaven, which a woman took and hid in (X)three [j]sata of flour until it was all leavened.”

Teaching in the Villages

22 And He was passing through one city and village after another, teaching, and (Y)proceeding on His way to Jerusalem. 23 And someone said to Him, “Lord, are there just a few who are being saved?” And He said to them, 24 (Z)Strive to enter through the narrow door; for many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able. 25 Once the head of the house gets up and (AA)shuts the door, and you begin standing outside and knocking on the door, saying, ‘(AB)Lord, open up to us!’ and He then will answer and say to you, ‘(AC)I do not know where you are from.’ 26 Then you will (AD)begin saying, ‘We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets!’ 27 And yet He will [k]say, ‘(AE)I do not know where you are from; (AF)leave Me, all you [l]evildoers.’ 28 (AG)In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but yourselves being thrown out. 29 And they (AH)will come from east and west, and from north and south, and will recline at the table in the kingdom of God. 30 And behold, (AI)some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.”

31 At that very time some Pharisees approached, saying to Him, “Go away and leave this place, because (AJ)Herod wants to kill You.” 32 And He said to them, “Go and tell that [m]fox, ‘Behold, I am casting out demons and performing healings today and tomorrow, and on the third day I [n](AK)reach My goal.’ 33 Nevertheless (AL)I must go on My journey today and tomorrow and the next day; for it cannot be that a (AM)prophet would perish outside Jerusalem. 34 (AN)Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who have been sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, (AO)just as a hen gathers her [o]young under her wings, and you were unwilling! 35 Behold, your house is left to you desolate; and I say to you, you will not see Me until you say, ‘(AP)Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord!’”

Jesus Heals on the Sabbath

14 It happened that when He went into the house of one of the [p]leaders of the Pharisees on the Sabbath to eat bread, (AQ)they were watching Him [q]closely. And [r]there in front of Him was a man suffering from [s]edema. And Jesus responded and said to the [t](AR)lawyers and [u]Pharisees, (AS)Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath, or not?” But they kept silent. And He took hold of him and healed him, and sent him away. And He said to them, [v](AT)Which one of you will have a son or an ox fall into a well, and will not immediately pull him out on a Sabbath day?” (AU)And they could offer no reply to this.

Parable of the Guests

Now He began telling a parable to the invited guests when He noticed how (AV)they had been picking out the places of honor at the table, saying to them, “Whenever you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, (AW)do not [w]take the place of honor, for someone more distinguished than you may have been invited by him, and the one who invited you [x]both will come and say to you, ‘Give your place to this person,’ and then (AX)in disgrace you will proceed to occupy the last place. 10 But whenever you are invited, go and [y]take the last place, so that when the one who has invited you comes, he will say to you, ‘Friend, (AY)move up higher’; then you will have honor in the sight of all who are [z]dining at the table with you. 11 (AZ)For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

12 Now He also went on to say to the one who had invited Him, “Whenever you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers, your relatives, nor wealthy neighbors, otherwise they may also invite you to a meal in return, and that will be your [aa]repayment. 13 But whenever you give a [ab]banquet, invite people who are poor, who have disabilities, who are limping, and people who are blind; 14 and you will be blessed, since they [ac]do not have the means to repay you; for you will be repaid at (BA)the resurrection of the righteous.”

15 Now when one of those who were reclining at the table with Him heard this, he said to Him, “(BB)Blessed is everyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!”

Parable of the Dinner

16 But He said to him, (BC)A man was giving a big dinner, and he invited many; 17 and at the dinner hour he sent his slave to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, because everything is ready now.’ 18 And yet they all alike began to make excuses. The first one said to him, ‘I purchased a field and I need to go out to look at it; [ad]please consider me excused.’ 19 And another one said, ‘I bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to try them out; [ae]please consider me excused.’ 20 And another one said, ‘(BD)I took a woman as my wife, and for that reason I cannot come.’ 21 And the slave came back and reported this to his master. Then the head of the household became angry and said to his slave, ‘Go out at once into the streets and lanes of the city and bring in here those who are poor, those with disabilities, those who are blind, and those who are limping.’ 22 And later the slave said, ‘Master, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.’ 23 And the master said to the slave, ‘Go out into the roads and the hedges and press upon them to come in, so that my house will be filled. 24 For I tell you, none of those men who were invited shall taste my dinner.’”

Discipleship Tested

25 Now [af]large crowds were going along with Him, and He turned and said to them, 26 (BE)If anyone comes to Me and does not [ag]hate his own father, mother, wife, children, brothers, sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple. 27 Whoever does not (BF)carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. 28 For which one of you, when he wants to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost, to see if he has enough to complete it? 29 Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who are watching it will begin to ridicule him, 30 saying, ‘This person began to build, and was not able to finish!’ 31 Or what king, when he sets out to meet another king in battle, will not first sit down and (BG)consider whether he is strong enough with ten thousand men to face the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32 Otherwise, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and requests terms of peace. 33 So then, none of you can be My disciple who (BH)does not [ah]give up all his own possessions.

34 “Therefore, salt is good; but (BI)if even salt has become tasteless, with what will it be [ai]seasoned? 35 It is useless either for the soil or the manure pile, so it is thrown out. (BJ)The one who has ears to hear, [aj]let him hear.”

The Lost Sheep

15 Now all the (BK)tax collectors and [ak]sinners were coming near [al]Jesus to listen to Him. And both the Pharisees and the scribes began to complain, saying, “This man receives sinners and (BL)eats with them.”

And so He told them this parable, saying, (BM)What man among you, if he has a hundred sheep and has lost one of them, does not leave the other ninety-nine in the [am]open pasture and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it? And when he has found it, he puts it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, because I have found my sheep that was lost!’ I tell you that in the same way, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance.

The Lost Coin

“Or what woman, if she has ten [an]silver coins and loses one coin, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? And when she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, because I have found the coin which I had lost!’ 10 In the same way, I tell you, there is joy (BN)in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

The Prodigal Son

11 And He said, “A man had two sons. 12 The younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me (BO)the share of the estate that [ao]is coming to me.’ And so he divided his [ap](BP)wealth between them. 13 And not many days later, the younger son gathered everything together and went on a journey to a distant country, and there he squandered his estate in [aq]wild living. 14 Now when he had [ar]spent everything, a severe famine occurred in that country, and he began doing without. 15 So he went and [as]hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed pigs. 16 And he longed to have his fill of the carob pods that the pigs were eating, and no one was giving him anything. 17 But when he came to [at]his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired laborers have more than enough bread, but I am dying here [au]from hunger! 18 I will set out and go to my father, and will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven, and [av]in your sight; 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me as one of your hired laborers.”’ 20 So he set out and came to [aw]his father. But when he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion for him, and ran and [ax](BQ)embraced him and kissed him. 21 And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and [ay]in your sight; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ 22 But the father said to his slaves, ‘Quickly bring out (BR)the best robe and put it on him, and [az](BS)put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet; 23 and bring the fattened calf, slaughter it, and let’s eat and celebrate; 24 for this son of mine was (BT)dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.’ And they began to celebrate.

25 “Now his older son was in the field, and when he came and approached the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 And he summoned one of the servants and began inquiring what these things could be. 27 And he said to him, ‘Your brother has come, and your father has slaughtered the fattened calf because he has received him back safe and sound.’ 28 But he became angry and was not willing to go in; and his father came out and began pleading with him. 29 But he answered and said to his father, ‘Look! For so many years I have been serving you and I have never [ba]neglected a command of yours; and yet you never gave me a young goat, so that I might celebrate with my friends; 30 but when this son of yours came, who has devoured your [bb](BU)wealth with prostitutes, you slaughtered the fattened calf for him.’ 31 And he said to him, ‘Son, you [bc]have always been with me, and all that is mine is yours. 32 But we had to celebrate and rejoice, because this brother of yours was (BV)dead and has begun to live, and was lost and has been found.’”

The Unrighteous Manager

16 Now He was also saying to the disciples, “There was a rich man who had a manager, and this manager was [bd]reported to him as (BW)squandering his possessions. And he summoned him and said to him, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an accounting of your management, for you can no longer be manager.’ And the manager said to himself, ‘What am I to do, since my [be]master is taking the management away from me? I am not strong enough to [bf]dig; I am ashamed to beg. I know what I will do, so that when I am removed from the management people will welcome me into their homes.’ And he summoned each one of his [bg]master’s debtors, and he began saying to the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ And he said, ‘A hundred [bh]jugs of oil.’ And he said to him, ‘Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.’ Then he said to another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ And he said, ‘A hundred [bi]kors of wheat.’ He *said to him, ‘Take your bill, and write eighty.’ And his [bj]master complimented the unrighteous manager because he had acted shrewdly; for the sons of (BX)this age are more shrewd in relation to their own [bk]kind than the (BY)sons of light. And I say to you, (BZ)make friends for yourselves by means of the [bl](CA)wealth of unrighteousness, so that when it [bm]is all gone, (CB)they will receive you into the eternal dwellings.

10 (CC)The one who is faithful in a very little thing is also faithful in much; and the one who is unrighteous in a very little thing is also unrighteous in much. 11 Therefore if you have not [bn]been faithful in the use of unrighteous [bo](CD)wealth, who will entrust the true wealth to you? 12 And if you have not [bp]been faithful in the use of that which is another’s, who will give you that which is your own? 13 (CE)No [bq]servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and [br](CF)wealth.”

14 Now the Pharisees, who were (CG)lovers of money, were listening to all these things and (CH)were [bs]ridiculing Him. 15 And He said to them, “You are the ones who (CI)justify yourselves in the sight of people, but (CJ)God knows your hearts; because that which is highly esteemed among people is detestable in the sight of God.

16 (CK)The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John came; since that time (CL)the gospel of the kingdom of God [bt]has been preached, and everyone is forcing his way into it. 17 (CM)But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one [bu]stroke of a letter of the Law to fail.

18 (CN)Everyone who [bv]divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries one who is [bw]divorced from a husband commits adultery.

The Rich Man and Lazarus

19 “Now there was a rich man, and he habitually dressed in purple and fine linen, enjoying himself in splendor every day. 20 And a poor man named Lazarus (CO)was laid at his gate, covered with sores, 21 and longing to be fed from the scraps which fell from the rich man’s table; not only that, the dogs also were coming and licking his sores. 22 Now it happened that the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to [bx](CP)Abraham’s arms; and the rich man also died and was buried. 23 And in (CQ)Hades he raised his eyes, being in torment, and *saw Abraham far away and Lazarus in his [by]arms. 24 And he cried out and said, ‘(CR)Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus, so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am in agony in (CS)this flame.’ 25 But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that (CT)during your life you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus bad things; but now he is being comforted here, and you are in agony. 26 And [bz]besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set, so that those who want to go over from here to you will not be able, nor will any people cross over from there to us.’ 27 And he said, ‘Then I request of you, father, that you send him to my father’s house— 28 for I have five brothers—in order that he may (CU)warn them, so that they will not come to this place of torment as well.’ 29 But Abraham *said, ‘They have [ca](CV)Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’ 30 But he said, ‘No, (CW)father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent!’ 31 But he said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.’”

Instructions

17 Now He said to His disciples, (CX)It is inevitable that [cb]stumbling blocks come, but woe to one through whom they come! (CY)It is better for him if a millstone is hung around his neck and he [cc]is thrown into the sea, than that he may cause one of these little ones to [cd]sin. [ce]Be on your guard! (CZ)If your brother sins, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. And if he sins against you (DA)seven times a day, and returns to you seven times, saying, ‘I repent,’ you shall forgive him.”

(DB)The apostles said to (DC)the Lord, “Increase our faith!” But (DD)the Lord said, “If you [cf]had faith [cg]the size of (DE)a mustard seed, you could say to this (DF)mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and be planted in the sea’; and it would [ch]obey you.

“Now which of you, having a slave plowing or tending sheep, will say to him after he comes in from the field, ‘Come immediately and recline at the table to eat’? On the contrary, will he not say to him, ‘(DG)Prepare something for me to eat, and properly [ci]clothe yourself and serve me while I eat and drink; and [cj]afterward you [ck]may eat and drink’? He does not thank the slave because he did the things which were commanded, does he? 10 So you too, when you do all the things which were commanded you, say, ‘We are [cl]unworthy slaves; we have done only that which we ought to have done.’”

Ten Men with Leprosy Healed

11 While He was (DH)on the way to Jerusalem, (DI)He was passing [cm]between Samaria and Galilee. 12 And as He entered a village, ten men with leprosy who (DJ)stood at a distance met Him; 13 and they raised their voices, saying, “Jesus, (DK)Master, have mercy on us!” 14 When He saw them, He said to them, (DL)Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they were going, they were cleansed. 15 Now one of them, when he saw that he had been healed, turned back, (DM)glorifying God with a loud voice, 16 and he fell on his face at His feet, giving thanks to Him. And he was a (DN)Samaritan. 17 But Jesus responded and said, “Were there not ten cleansed? But the nine—where are they? 18 [cn]Was no one found who returned to (DO)give glory to God, except this foreigner?” 19 And He said to him, “Stand up and go; (DP)your faith has [co]made you well.”

Second Coming Foretold

20 Now He was questioned by the Pharisees (DQ)as to when the kingdom of God was coming, and He answered them and said, “The kingdom of God is not coming with [cp](DR)signs that can be observed; 21 nor will (DS)they say, ‘Look, here it is!’ or, ‘There it is!’ For behold, the kingdom of God is [cq]in your midst.”

22 And He said to the disciples, (DT)The days will come when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it. 23 (DU)And they will say to you, ‘Look there,’ or, ‘Look here!’ Do not leave, and do not run after them. 24 (DV)For just like the lightning, when it flashes out of one part [cr]of the sky, shines to the other part [cs]of the sky, so will the Son of Man be in His day. 25 (DW)But first He must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. 26 (DX)And just as it happened (DY)in the days of Noah, so will it also be in the days of the Son of Man: 27 people were eating, they were drinking, they were marrying, and they were being given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. 28 [ct]It was the same as happened in (DZ)the days of Lot: they were eating, they were drinking, they were buying, they were selling, they were planting, and they were building; 29 but on the day that Lot left Sodom, it rained fire and [cu]brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. 30 It will be [cv]just the same on the day that the Son of Man (EA)is revealed. 31 On that day, the one who will be (EB)on the [cw]housetop, [cx]with his goods in the house, must not go down to take them out; and likewise the one in the field must not turn back. 32 (EC)Remember Lot’s wife. 33 (ED)Whoever strives to [cy]save his [cz]life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will keep it. 34 I tell you, on that night there will be two in one bed; one will be taken and the other will be left. 35 (EE)There will be two women grinding at the same place; one will be taken and the other will be left. 36 [[da](EF)Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other will be left.”] 37 And responding, they *said to Him, “Where, Lord?” And He said to them, (EG)Where the body is, there also the [db]vultures will be gathered.”

Parables on Prayer

18 Now He was telling them a parable to show that at all times they (EH)ought to pray and not (EI)become discouraged, saying, “In a certain city there was a judge who did not fear God and did not (EJ)respect any person. Now there was a widow in that city, and she kept coming to him, saying, ‘Give me justice against my [dc]opponent.’ For a while he was unwilling; but later he said to himself, ‘Even though I do not fear God nor (EK)respect any person, yet (EL)because this widow is bothering me, I will give her justice; otherwise [dd]by continually coming she will (EM)wear me out.’” And (EN)the Lord said, “Listen to what the unrighteous judge *said; now, will God not (EO)bring about justice for His (EP)elect who cry out to Him day [de]and night, and will He (EQ)delay long for them? I tell you that He will bring about justice for them quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, (ER)will He find [df]faith on the earth?”

The Pharisee and the Tax Collector

Now He also told this parable to some people who (ES)trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and (ET)viewed others with contempt: 10 “Two men (EU)went up into the [dg]temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee (EV)stood and began praying this in regard to himself: ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other people: swindlers, crooked, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 I (EW)fast twice a week; I (EX)pay tithes of all that I get.’ 13 But the tax collector, (EY)standing some distance away, (EZ)was even unwilling to raise his eyes toward heaven, but (FA)was beating his chest, saying, ‘God, be [dh]merciful to me, the sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went to his house justified rather than the other one; (FB)for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

15 (FC)Now they were bringing even their babies to Him so that He would touch them; but when the disciples saw it, they began rebuking them. 16 But Jesus called for [di]the little ones, saying, “Allow the children to come to Me, and do not [dj]forbid them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 17 Truly I say to you, (FD)whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it at all.”

The Rich Young Ruler

18 (FE)A ruler questioned Him, saying, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 19 But Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me [dk]good? No one is [dl]good except God alone. 20 You know the commandments, ‘(FF)Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not give false testimony, Honor your father and mother.’” 21 And he said, “All these things I have kept since my youth.” 22 Now when Jesus heard this, He said to him, “One thing you still lack; (FG)sell all that you possess and distribute the money to the poor, and you will have (FH)treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” 23 But when he had heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely wealthy. 24 And Jesus looked at him and said, (FI)How hard it is for those who are wealthy to enter the kingdom of God! 25 For (FJ)it is easier for a camel to [dm]go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God!” 26 Those who heard Him said, “And so who can be saved?” 27 But He said, (FK)The things that are impossible with people are possible with God.”

28 Peter said, “Behold, (FL)we have left [dn]our own homes and followed You.” 29 And He said to them, “Truly I say to you, (FM)there is no one who has left house, or wife, or brothers, or parents, or children for the sake of the kingdom of God, 30 who will not receive many times as much at this time, and in (FN)the age to come, eternal life.”

31 (FO)Now He took the twelve aside and said to them, “Behold, (FP)we are going up to Jerusalem, and (FQ)all the things that have been written through the prophets about the Son of Man will be accomplished. 32 (FR)For He will be [do]handed over to the Gentiles, and will be ridiculed, and abused, and spit upon, 33 and after they have flogged Him, they will kill Him; and on the third day He will rise.” 34 [dp](FS)The disciples understood none of these things, and the meaning of this statement was hidden from them, and they did not comprehend the things that were said.

Bartimaeus Receives Sight

35 (FT)Now as [dq](FU)Jesus was approaching Jericho, a man who was blind was sitting by the road, begging. 36 But when he heard a crowd going by, he began inquiring what this was. 37 They told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by. 38 And he called out, saying, “Jesus, (FV)Son of David, have mercy on me!” 39 Those who led the way were sternly telling him to be quiet; but he kept crying out all the more, “(FW)Son of David, have mercy on me!” 40 And Jesus stopped and commanded that he be brought to Him; and when he came near, He asked him, 41 “What do you want Me to do for you?” And he said, “Lord, I want to regain my sight!” 42 And Jesus said to him, “Regain your sight; (FX)your faith has [dr]made you well.” 43 And immediately he regained his sight and began following Him, (FY)glorifying God; and when (FZ)all the people saw it, they gave praise to God.

Zaccheus Converted

19 Jesus (GA)entered Jericho and was passing through. And [ds]there was a man called by the name of Zaccheus; he was a chief tax collector and he was rich. Zaccheus was trying to see who Jesus was, and he was unable due to the crowd, because he was short in stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up a [dt](GB)sycamore tree in order to see Him, because He was about to pass through that way. And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and said to him, “Zaccheus, hurry and come down, for today I must stay at your house.” And he hurried and came down, and received Him [du]joyfully. When the people saw this, they all began to complain, saying, “He has gone in [dv]to be the guest of a man who is a sinner!” But Zaccheus stopped and said to (GC)the Lord, “Behold, Lord, half of my possessions I am giving to the poor, and if I have (GD)extorted anything from anyone, I am giving back (GE)four times as much.” And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he, too, is (GF)a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

Parable of the Ten Minas

11 Now while they were listening to these things, Jesus went on to tell a parable, because (GG)He was near Jerusalem and they thought that (GH)the kingdom of God was going to appear immediately. 12 So He said, (GI)A nobleman went to a distant country to receive a kingdom for himself, and then to return. 13 And he called ten of his own slaves and gave them ten [dw]minas, and said to them, ‘Do business with this money [dx]until I come back.’ 14 But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man to reign over us.’ 15 When he returned after receiving the kingdom, he ordered that these slaves, to whom he had given the money, be summoned to him so that he would learn how much they had made by the business they had done. 16 The first slave appeared, saying, ‘[dy]Master, your [dz]mina has made ten minas more.’ 17 And he said to him, ‘Well done, good slave; since you have been (GJ)faithful in a very little thing, you are to have authority over ten cities.’ 18 The second one came, saying, ‘Your [ea]mina, [eb]master, has made five minas.’ 19 And he said to him also, ‘And you are to be over five cities.’ 20 And then another came, saying, ‘Master, here is your mina, which I kept tucked away in a handkerchief; 21 for I was afraid of you, because you are a demanding man; you take up what you did not lay down, and reap what you did not sow.’ 22 He *said to him, ‘[ec]From your own lips I will judge you, you worthless slave. Did you know that I am a demanding man, taking up what I did not lay down, and reaping what I did not sow? 23 And so why did you not put my money in the bank, and when I came back, I would have collected it with interest?’ 24 And then he said to the other slaves who were present, ‘Take the mina away from him and give it to the one who has the ten minas.’ 25 And they said to him, ‘Master, he already has ten minas.’ 26 (GK)I tell you that to everyone who has, more shall be given, but from the one who does not have, even what he does have shall be taken away. 27 But as for (GL)these enemies of mine who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and (GM)slaughter them in my presence.’”

Triumphal Entry

28 After Jesus said these things, He (GN)was going on ahead, (GO)going up to Jerusalem.

29 (GP)When He approached Bethphage and (GQ)Bethany, near the [ed]mountain that is called (GR)Olivet, He sent two of the disciples, 30 saying, “Go into the village [ee]ahead of you; there, as you enter, you will find a colt tied, on which no one yet has ever sat; untie it and bring it here. 31 And if anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this: ‘[ef]The Lord has need of it.’” 32 So those who were sent left and found it just as He had told them. 33 And as they were untying the colt, its [eg]owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” 34 They said, “[eh]The Lord has need of it.” 35 And they brought it to Jesus, (GS)and they threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it. 36 Now as He was going, they were spreading their cloaks on the road. 37 And as soon as He was approaching, near the descent of (GT)the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of the disciples began to (GU)praise God [ei]joyfully with a loud voice for all the [ej]miracles which they had seen, 38 [ek]shouting:

(GV)Blessed is the (GW)King, the One who comes in the name of the Lord;
Peace in heaven and (GX)glory in the highest!”

39 (GY)And yet some of the Pharisees [el]in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples!” 40 Jesus replied, “I tell you, if these stop speaking, (GZ)the stones will cry out!”

41 When He approached Jerusalem, He saw the city and (HA)wept over it, 42 saying, “If you had known on this day, even you, the conditions for peace! But now they have been hidden from your eyes. 43 For the days will come upon you [em]when your enemies will (HB)put up a [en]barricade against you, and (HC)surround you and hem you in on every side, 44 and they will level you to the ground, and throw down your children within you, and (HD)they will not leave in you one stone upon [eo]another, because you did not recognize (HE)the time of your visitation.”

Traders Driven from the Temple

45 (HF)And Jesus entered the temple grounds and began to drive out those who were selling, 46 saying to them, “It is written: ‘(HG)And My house will be a house of prayer,’ (HH)but you have made it a den of robbers.”

47 And (HI)He was teaching daily in the temple; but the chief priests and the scribes and the leading men among the people (HJ)were trying to put Him to death, 48 and yet they could not find [ep]anything that they might do, for all the people were hanging on to [eq]every word He said.

Repent or Perish

13 Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate(A) had mixed with their sacrifices. Jesus answered, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way?(B) I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam(C) fell on them—do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? I tell you, no! But unless you repent,(D) you too will all perish.”

Then he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree growing in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it but did not find any.(E) So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, ‘For three years now I’ve been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any. Cut it down!(F) Why should it use up the soil?’

“‘Sir,’ the man replied, ‘leave it alone for one more year, and I’ll dig around it and fertilize it. If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down.’”

Jesus Heals a Crippled Woman on the Sabbath

10 On a Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues,(G) 11 and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years.(H) She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. 12 When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, “Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.” 13 Then he put his hands on her,(I) and immediately she straightened up and praised God.

14 Indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath,(J) the synagogue leader(K) said to the people, “There are six days for work.(L) So come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath.”

15 The Lord answered him, “You hypocrites! Doesn’t each of you on the Sabbath untie your ox or donkey from the stall and lead it out to give it water?(M) 16 Then should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham,(N) whom Satan(O) has kept bound for eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her?”

17 When he said this, all his opponents were humiliated,(P) but the people were delighted with all the wonderful things he was doing.

The Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Yeast(Q)(R)

18 Then Jesus asked, “What is the kingdom of God(S) like?(T) What shall I compare it to? 19 It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden. It grew and became a tree,(U) and the birds perched in its branches.”(V)

20 Again he asked, “What shall I compare the kingdom of God to? 21 It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds[a] of flour until it worked all through the dough.”(W)

The Narrow Door

22 Then Jesus went through the towns and villages, teaching as he made his way to Jerusalem.(X) 23 Someone asked him, “Lord, are only a few people going to be saved?”

He said to them, 24 “Make every effort to enter through the narrow door,(Y) because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to. 25 Once the owner of the house gets up and closes the door, you will stand outside knocking and pleading, ‘Sir, open the door for us.’

“But he will answer, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from.’(Z)

26 “Then you will say, ‘We ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.’

27 “But he will reply, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from. Away from me, all you evildoers!’(AA)

28 “There will be weeping there, and gnashing of teeth,(AB) when you see Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you yourselves thrown out. 29 People will come from east and west(AC) and north and south, and will take their places at the feast in the kingdom of God. 30 Indeed there are those who are last who will be first, and first who will be last.”(AD)

Jesus’ Sorrow for Jerusalem(AE)(AF)

31 At that time some Pharisees came to Jesus and said to him, “Leave this place and go somewhere else. Herod(AG) wants to kill you.”

32 He replied, “Go tell that fox, ‘I will keep on driving out demons and healing people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach my goal.’(AH) 33 In any case, I must press on today and tomorrow and the next day—for surely no prophet(AI) can die outside Jerusalem!

34 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings,(AJ) and you were not willing. 35 Look, your house is left to you desolate.(AK) I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’[b](AL)

Jesus at a Pharisee’s House(AM)

14 One Sabbath, when Jesus went to eat in the house of a prominent Pharisee,(AN) he was being carefully watched.(AO) There in front of him was a man suffering from abnormal swelling of his body. Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in the law,(AP) “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?”(AQ) But they remained silent. So taking hold of the man, he healed him and sent him on his way.

Then he asked them, “If one of you has a child[c] or an ox that falls into a well on the Sabbath day, will you not immediately pull it out?”(AR) And they had nothing to say.

When he noticed how the guests picked the places of honor at the table,(AS) he told them this parable: “When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for a person more distinguished than you may have been invited. If so, the host who invited both of you will come and say to you, ‘Give this person your seat.’ Then, humiliated, you will have to take the least important place. 10 But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, ‘Friend, move up to a better place.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all the other guests. 11 For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”(AT)

12 Then Jesus said to his host, “When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. 13 But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind,(AU) 14 and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”(AV)

The Parable of the Great Banquet(AW)

15 When one of those at the table with him heard this, he said to Jesus, “Blessed is the one who will eat at the feast(AX) in the kingdom of God.”(AY)

16 Jesus replied: “A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests. 17 At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’

18 “But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, ‘I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.’

19 “Another said, ‘I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I’m on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.’

20 “Still another said, ‘I just got married, so I can’t come.’

21 “The servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.’(AZ)

22 “‘Sir,’ the servant said, ‘what you ordered has been done, but there is still room.’

23 “Then the master told his servant, ‘Go out to the roads and country lanes and compel them to come in, so that my house will be full. 24 I tell you, not one of those who were invited will get a taste of my banquet.’”(BA)

The Cost of Being a Disciple

25 Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: 26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple.(BB) 27 And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.(BC)

28 “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? 29 For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, 30 saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.’

31 “Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Won’t he first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32 If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace. 33 In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples.(BD)

34 “Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?(BE) 35 It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile; it is thrown out.(BF)

“Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”(BG)

The Parable of the Lost Sheep(BH)

15 Now the tax collectors(BI) and sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus. But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”(BJ)

Then Jesus told them this parable:(BK) “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?(BL) And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’(BM) I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.(BN)

The Parable of the Lost Coin

“Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins[d] and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’(BO) 10 In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”(BP)

The Parable of the Lost Son

11 Jesus continued: “There was a man who had two sons.(BQ) 12 The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’(BR) So he divided his property(BS) between them.

13 “Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth(BT) in wild living. 14 After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. 15 So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs.(BU) 16 He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything.

17 “When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! 18 I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned(BV) against heaven and against you. 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’ 20 So he got up and went to his father.

“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.(BW)

21 “The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.(BX) I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’

22 “But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe(BY) and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger(BZ) and sandals on his feet. 23 Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. 24 For this son of mine was dead and is alive again;(CA) he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.(CB)

25 “Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on. 27 ‘Your brother has come,’ he replied, ‘and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.’

28 “The older brother became angry(CC) and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. 29 But he answered his father, ‘Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. 30 But when this son of yours who has squandered your property(CD) with prostitutes(CE) comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!’

31 “‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. 32 But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’”(CF)

The Parable of the Shrewd Manager

16 Jesus told his disciples: “There was a rich man whose manager was accused of wasting his possessions.(CG) So he called him in and asked him, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your management, because you cannot be manager any longer.’

“The manager said to himself, ‘What shall I do now? My master is taking away my job. I’m not strong enough to dig, and I’m ashamed to beg— I know what I’ll do so that, when I lose my job here, people will welcome me into their houses.’

“So he called in each one of his master’s debtors. He asked the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’

“‘Nine hundred gallons[e] of olive oil,’ he replied.

“The manager told him, ‘Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it four hundred and fifty.’

“Then he asked the second, ‘And how much do you owe?’

“‘A thousand bushels[f] of wheat,’ he replied.

“He told him, ‘Take your bill and make it eight hundred.’

“The master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly. For the people of this world(CH) are more shrewd(CI) in dealing with their own kind than are the people of the light.(CJ) I tell you, use worldly wealth(CK) to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.(CL)

10 “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much,(CM) and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. 11 So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth,(CN) who will trust you with true riches? 12 And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else’s property, who will give you property of your own?

13 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”(CO)

14 The Pharisees, who loved money,(CP) heard all this and were sneering at Jesus.(CQ) 15 He said to them, “You are the ones who justify yourselves(CR) in the eyes of others, but God knows your hearts.(CS) What people value highly is detestable in God’s sight.

Additional Teachings

16 “The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John.(CT) Since that time, the good news of the kingdom of God is being preached,(CU) and everyone is forcing their way into it. 17 It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for the least stroke of a pen to drop out of the Law.(CV)

18 “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.(CW)

The Rich Man and Lazarus

19 “There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day.(CX) 20 At his gate was laid a beggar(CY) named Lazarus, covered with sores 21 and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table.(CZ) Even the dogs came and licked his sores.

22 “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24 So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham,(DA) have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’(DB)

25 “But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things,(DC) but now he is comforted here and you are in agony.(DD) 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’

27 “He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, 28 for I have five brothers. Let him warn them,(DE) so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’

29 “Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses(DF) and the Prophets;(DG) let them listen to them.’

30 “‘No, father Abraham,’(DH) he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’

31 “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’”

Sin, Faith, Duty

17 Jesus said to his disciples: “Things that cause people to stumble(DI) are bound to come, but woe to anyone through whom they come.(DJ) It would be better for them to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around their neck than to cause one of these little ones(DK) to stumble.(DL) So watch yourselves.

“If your brother or sister[g] sins against you, rebuke them;(DM) and if they repent, forgive them.(DN) Even if they sin against you seven times in a day and seven times come back to you saying ‘I repent,’ you must forgive them.”(DO)

The apostles(DP) said to the Lord,(DQ) “Increase our faith!”

He replied, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed,(DR) you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you.(DS)

“Suppose one of you has a servant plowing or looking after the sheep. Will he say to the servant when he comes in from the field, ‘Come along now and sit down to eat’? Won’t he rather say, ‘Prepare my supper, get yourself ready and wait on me(DT) while I eat and drink; after that you may eat and drink’? Will he thank the servant because he did what he was told to do? 10 So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.’”(DU)

Jesus Heals Ten Men With Leprosy

11 Now on his way to Jerusalem,(DV) Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee.(DW) 12 As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy[h](DX) met him. They stood at a distance(DY) 13 and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master,(DZ) have pity on us!”

14 When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.”(EA) And as they went, they were cleansed.

15 One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God(EB) in a loud voice. 16 He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan.(EC)

17 Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? 18 Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?” 19 Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.”(ED)

The Coming of the Kingdom of God(EE)

20 Once, on being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come,(EF) Jesus replied, “The coming of the kingdom of God is not something that can be observed, 21 nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’(EG) because the kingdom of God is in your midst.”[i]

22 Then he said to his disciples, “The time is coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man,(EH) but you will not see it.(EI) 23 People will tell you, ‘There he is!’ or ‘Here he is!’ Do not go running off after them.(EJ) 24 For the Son of Man in his day[j] will be like the lightning,(EK) which flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other. 25 But first he must suffer many things(EL) and be rejected(EM) by this generation.(EN)

26 “Just as it was in the days of Noah,(EO) so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man. 27 People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all.

28 “It was the same in the days of Lot.(EP) People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building. 29 But the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all.

30 “It will be just like this on the day the Son of Man is revealed.(EQ) 31 On that day no one who is on the housetop, with possessions inside, should go down to get them. Likewise, no one in the field should go back for anything.(ER) 32 Remember Lot’s wife!(ES) 33 Whoever tries to keep their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life will preserve it.(ET) 34 I tell you, on that night two people will be in one bed; one will be taken and the other left. 35 Two women will be grinding grain together; one will be taken and the other left.”(EU) [36] [k]

37 “Where, Lord?” they asked.

He replied, “Where there is a dead body, there the vultures will gather.”(EV)

The Parable of the Persistent Widow

18 Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.(EW) He said: “In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared what people thought. And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, ‘Grant me justice(EX) against my adversary.’

“For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or care what people think, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won’t eventually come and attack me!’”(EY)

And the Lord(EZ) said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says. And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out(FA) to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man(FB) comes,(FC) will he find faith on the earth?”

The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector

To some who were confident of their own righteousness(FD) and looked down on everyone else,(FE) Jesus told this parable: 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray,(FF) one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood by himself(FG) and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast(FH) twice a week and give a tenth(FI) of all I get.’

13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast(FJ) and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’(FK)

14 “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”(FL)

The Little Children and Jesus(FM)

15 People were also bringing babies to Jesus for him to place his hands on them. When the disciples saw this, they rebuked them. 16 But Jesus called the children to him and said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 17 Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child(FN) will never enter it.”

The Rich and the Kingdom of God(FO)

18 A certain ruler asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”(FP)

19 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. 20 You know the commandments: ‘You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.’[l](FQ)

21 “All these I have kept since I was a boy,” he said.

22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor,(FR) and you will have treasure in heaven.(FS) Then come, follow me.”

23 When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was very wealthy. 24 Jesus looked at him and said, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!(FT) 25 Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”

26 Those who heard this asked, “Who then can be saved?”

27 Jesus replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.”(FU)

28 Peter said to him, “We have left all we had to follow you!”(FV)

29 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus said to them, “no one who has left home or wife or brothers or sisters or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God 30 will fail to receive many times as much in this age, and in the age to come(FW) eternal life.”(FX)

Jesus Predicts His Death a Third Time(FY)

31 Jesus took the Twelve aside and told them, “We are going up to Jerusalem,(FZ) and everything that is written by the prophets(GA) about the Son of Man(GB) will be fulfilled. 32 He will be delivered over to the Gentiles.(GC) They will mock him, insult him and spit on him; 33 they will flog him(GD) and kill him.(GE) On the third day(GF) he will rise again.”(GG)

34 The disciples did not understand any of this. Its meaning was hidden from them, and they did not know what he was talking about.(GH)

A Blind Beggar Receives His Sight(GI)

35 As Jesus approached Jericho,(GJ) a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. 36 When he heard the crowd going by, he asked what was happening. 37 They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.”(GK)

38 He called out, “Jesus, Son of David,(GL) have mercy(GM) on me!”

39 Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”(GN)

40 Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him. When he came near, Jesus asked him, 41 “What do you want me to do for you?”

“Lord, I want to see,” he replied.

42 Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has healed you.”(GO) 43 Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus, praising God. When all the people saw it, they also praised God.(GP)

Zacchaeus the Tax Collector

19 Jesus entered Jericho(GQ) and was passing through. A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig(GR) tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way.(GS)

When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.

All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.”(GT)

But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord,(GU) “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything,(GV) I will pay back four times the amount.”(GW)

Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham.(GX) 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”(GY)

The Parable of the Ten Minas(GZ)

11 While they were listening to this, he went on to tell them a parable, because he was near Jerusalem and the people thought that the kingdom of God(HA) was going to appear at once.(HB) 12 He said: “A man of noble birth went to a distant country to have himself appointed king and then to return. 13 So he called ten of his servants(HC) and gave them ten minas.[m] ‘Put this money to work,’ he said, ‘until I come back.’

14 “But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, ‘We don’t want this man to be our king.’

15 “He was made king, however, and returned home. Then he sent for the servants to whom he had given the money, in order to find out what they had gained with it.

16 “The first one came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned ten more.’

17 “‘Well done, my good servant!’(HD) his master replied. ‘Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.’(HE)

18 “The second came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned five more.’

19 “His master answered, ‘You take charge of five cities.’

20 “Then another servant came and said, ‘Sir, here is your mina; I have kept it laid away in a piece of cloth. 21 I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take out what you did not put in and reap what you did not sow.’(HF)

22 “His master replied, ‘I will judge you by your own words,(HG) you wicked servant! You knew, did you, that I am a hard man, taking out what I did not put in, and reaping what I did not sow?(HH) 23 Why then didn’t you put my money on deposit, so that when I came back, I could have collected it with interest?’

24 “Then he said to those standing by, ‘Take his mina away from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.’

25 “‘Sir,’ they said, ‘he already has ten!’

26 “He replied, ‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what they have will be taken away.(HI) 27 But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them—bring them here and kill them in front of me.’”

Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King(HJ)(HK)

28 After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.(HL) 29 As he approached Bethphage and Bethany(HM) at the hill called the Mount of Olives,(HN) he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, 30 “Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it.’”

32 Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them.(HO) 33 As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?”

34 They replied, “The Lord needs it.”

35 They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it. 36 As he went along, people spread their cloaks(HP) on the road.

37 When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives,(HQ) the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen:
