Jesus Rejoices in the Father's Will

21 (A)In that same hour (B)he rejoiced (C)in the Holy Spirit and said, “I thank you, Father, (D)Lord of heaven and earth, that (E)you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and (F)revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for (G)such was your gracious will.[a] 22 (H)All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows who the Son is (I)except the Father, or who the Father is (J)except the Son and anyone (K)to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”

23 Then turning to the disciples he said privately, (L)“Blessed are the eyes that see what you see! 24 For I tell you (M)that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.”

Come to Me, and I Will Give You Rest

25 (A)At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, (B)Lord of heaven and earth, that (C)you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and (D)revealed them to little children; 26 yes, Father, for such was your (E)gracious will.[a] 27 (F)All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son (G)except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone (H)to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. 28 (I)Come to (J)me, all who labor and are (K)heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and (L)learn from me, for I am (M)gentle and lowly in heart, and (N)you will find rest for your souls. 30 For (O)my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Martha and Mary

38 Now as they went on their way, Jesus[a] entered a village. And a woman named (A)Martha (B)welcomed him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called (C)Mary, who (D)sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” 41 But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are (E)anxious and troubled about many things, 42 but one thing is necessary.[b] Mary has chosen (F)the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”

The Lord's Prayer

11 Now Jesus[c] was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, (G)as John taught his disciples.” And he said to them, (H)“When you pray, say:

(I)“Father, (J)hallowed be (K)your name.
(L)Your kingdom come.
(M)Give us (N)each day our daily bread,[d]
and (O)forgive us our sins,
for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us.
And (P)lead us not into temptation.”

And he said to them, “Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves, for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; and he will answer from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot get up and give you anything’? I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything (Q)because he is his friend, yet because of his impudence[e] he will rise and give him whatever he needs. And I tell you, (R)ask, and (S)it will be given to you; (T)seek, and you will find; (U)knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. 11 What father among you, if his son asks for[f] a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; 12 or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, (V)who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father (W)give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

True Blessedness

27 As he said these things, (A)a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, (B)“Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts at which you nursed!” 28 But he said, (C)“Blessed rather are those (D)who hear the word of God and (E)keep it!”

The Sign of Jonah

29 (F)When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, (G)“This generation is an evil generation. (H)It seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. 30 For as (I)Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. 31 (J)The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with the men of this generation and (K)condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, (L)something greater than Solomon is here. 32 (M)The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and (N)condemn it, for (O)they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, (P)something greater than Jonah is here.

The Light in You

33 (Q)“No one after lighting a lamp puts it in a cellar or under a basket, but on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light. 34 Your eye is (R)the lamp of your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light, but when it is (S)bad, your body is full of darkness. 35 (T)Therefore be careful lest the light in you be darkness. 36 If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, it will be wholly bright, (U)as when a lamp with its rays gives you light.”

Woes to the Pharisees and Lawyers

37 While Jesus[a] was speaking, (V)a Pharisee asked him to dine with him, so he went in and reclined at table. 38 The Pharisee was astonished to see (W)that he did not first wash before dinner. 39 And the Lord said to him, (X)“Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you are full of (Y)greed and wickedness. 40 (Z)You fools! (AA)Did not he who made the outside make the inside also? 41 But (AB)give as alms those things that are within, and behold, (AC)everything is clean for you.

42 (AD)“But woe to you Pharisees! For (AE)you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect (AF)justice and (AG)the love of God. (AH)These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. 43 Woe to you Pharisees! For (AI)you love the best seat in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. 44 Woe to you! (AJ)For you are like unmarked graves, and people walk over them without knowing it.”

45 One of (AK)the lawyers answered him, “Teacher, in saying these things you insult us also.” 46 And he said, “Woe to you (AL)lawyers also! For (AM)you load people with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers. 47 (AN)Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets whom your fathers killed. 48 (AO)So you are witnesses and you (AP)consent to the deeds of (AQ)your fathers, for they killed them, and you build their tombs. 49 Therefore also (AR)the Wisdom of God said, (AS)‘I will send them (AT)prophets and apostles, (AU)some of whom they will (AV)kill and persecute,’ 50 so that (AW)the blood of all the prophets, shed (AX)from the foundation of the world, may be (AY)charged against this generation, 51 from the blood of (AZ)Abel to the blood of (BA)Zechariah, who perished between (BB)the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it will be (BC)required of this generation. 52 Woe to you (BD)lawyers! (BE)For you have taken away the key of (BF)knowledge. You (BG)did not enter yourselves, and you hindered those who were entering.”

53 As he went away from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press him hard and to provoke him to speak about many things, 54 (BH)lying in wait for him, (BI)to catch him in something he might say.

Beware of the Leaven of the Pharisees

12 In the meantime, (BJ)when so many thousands of the people had gathered together that they were trampling one another, he began to say to his disciples first, (BK)“Beware of (BL)the leaven of the Pharisees, (BM)which is hypocrisy. (BN)Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. Therefore whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in (BO)private rooms shall be proclaimed on (BP)the housetops.

Have No Fear

“I tell you, my friends, (BQ)do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do. But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him (BR)who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell.[b] Yes, I tell you, fear him! Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies?[c] And (BS)not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, (BT)even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; (BU)you are of more value than many sparrows.

Acknowledge Christ Before Men

“And I tell you, (BV)everyone who acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man also will acknowledge (BW)before the angels of God, but (BX)the one who denies me before men (BY)will be denied (BZ)before the angels of God. 10 And (CA)everyone who speaks a word (CB)against the Son of Man (CC)will be forgiven, but the one who (CD)blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. 11 (CE)And when they (CF)bring you before the synagogues and (CG)the rulers and (CH)the authorities, (CI)do not be anxious about how you should defend yourself or what you should say, 12 (CJ)for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”

The Parable of the Rich Fool

13 (CK)Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” 14 But he said to him, (CL)“Man, (CM)who made me a judge or arbitrator over you?” 15 And he said to them, (CN)“Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” 16 And he told them a parable, saying, (CO)“The land of a rich man produced plentifully, 17 and he thought to himself, (CP)‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ 18 And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my (CQ)barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up (CR)for many years; relax, (CS)eat, drink, be merry.”’ 20 But God said to him, (CT)‘Fool! (CU)This night (CV)your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, (CW)whose will they be?’ 21 So is the one (CX)who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”
