Misión de los doce discípulos(A)
9 Jesús reunió a sus doce discípulos y, después de darles poder y autoridad para expulsar a todos los demonios, y para sanar enfermedades, 2 los envió a predicar el reino de Dios y a sanar a los enfermos. 3 Les dijo:(B) «No lleven nada para el camino. Ni bastón, ni mochila, ni pan, ni dinero, ni dos túnicas. 4 En cualquier casa donde entren, quédense allí hasta que salgan. 5 Si en alguna ciudad no los reciben bien, salgan de allí y sacúdanse el polvo de los pies, como un testimonio contra ellos.»(C) 6 Los discípulos salieron y fueron por todas las aldeas, y por todas partes anunciaban las buenas noticias y sanaban enfermos.
Muerte de Juan el Bautista(D)
7 Herodes el tetrarca se enteró de todo lo que hacía Jesús, y estaba perplejo, pues algunos decían que Juan había resucitado de los muertos; 8 otros decían que Elías se había aparecido; y aún otros, que alguno de los antiguos profetas había resucitado.(E) 9 Pero Herodes dijo: «¡Yo mandé decapitar a Juan! Entonces, ¿quién es éste, de quien oigo decir tales cosas?» Y trataba de verlo.
Alimentación de los cinco mil(F)
10 Cuando los apóstoles regresaron, le contaron a Jesús todo lo que habían hecho. Entonces él los llevó a un lugar apartado de la ciudad llamada Betsaida. 11 Pero la gente lo supo y lo siguió, y él los recibió y les hablaba del reino de Dios, y sanaba a los que necesitaban ser sanados. 12 Cuando el día comenzó a declinar, los discípulos se acercaron a Jesús y le dijeron: «Despide a la gente, para que vayan a las aldeas y campos vecinos, y busquen comida y alojamiento, porque aquí no hay nada.» 13 Jesús les dijo: «Denles ustedes de comer.» Pero ellos respondieron: «No tenemos más que cinco panes y dos pescados, a no ser que vayamos a comprar alimentos para toda esta multitud.» 14 Allí había como cinco mil personas. Y Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: «Hagan que la gente se siente en grupos de cincuenta personas.» 15 Los discípulos lo hicieron así, y todos se sentaron. 16 Jesús tomó entonces los cinco panes y los dos pescados y, levantando los ojos al cielo, los bendijo, los partió, y se los dio a sus discípulos para que ellos los repartieran entre la gente. 17 Y todos comieron y quedaron satisfechos; y de lo que sobró recogieron doce cestas.
La confesión de Pedro(G)
18 Un día, mientras Jesús se apartó para orar, les preguntó a los discípulos que estaban con él: «¿Quién dice la gente que soy yo?» 19 Ellos respondieron: «Unos dicen que eres Juan el Bautista; otros, que Elías; y otros más, que eres alguno de los antiguos profetas que ha resucitado.(H)» 20 Entonces les preguntó: «¿Y ustedes, quién dicen que soy?» Y Pedro le respondió: «Tú eres el Cristo de Dios.»(I)
Jesús anuncia su muerte(J)
21 Jesús les mandó que de ninguna manera se lo dijeran a nadie. 22 También les dijo: «Es necesario que el Hijo del Hombre padezca muchas cosas, que sea desechado por los ancianos, por los principales sacerdotes y por los escribas, y que muera y resucite al tercer día.»
23 Y a todos les decía: «Si alguno quiere seguirme, niéguese a sí mismo, tome su cruz cada día, y sígame.(K) 24 Porque todo el que quiera salvar su vida, la perderá, y todo el que pierda su vida por causa de mí, la salvará.(L) 25 Porque ¿de qué le sirve a uno ganarse todo el mundo, si se destruye o se pierde a sí mismo? 26 Porque si alguno se avergüenza de mí y de mis palabras, el Hijo del Hombre se avergonzará de él cuando venga en su gloria, y en la gloria del Padre y de los santos ángeles. 27 Pero en verdad les digo, que algunos de los que están aquí no morirán hasta que vean el reino de Dios.»
La transfiguración(M)
28 Como ocho días después de que Jesús dijo esto, subió al monte a orar,(N) y se llevó con él a Pedro, Juan y Jacobo. 29 Y mientras oraba, cambió la apariencia de su rostro, y su vestido se hizo blanco y resplandeciente. 30 Aparecieron entonces dos hombres, y conversaban con él. Eran Moisés y Elías, 31 que rodeados de gloria hablaban de la partida de Jesús, la cual se iba a cumplir en Jerusalén. 32 Pedro y los que estaban con él tenían mucho sueño pero, como se quedaron despiertos, vieron la gloria de Jesús y a los dos hombres que estaban con él. 33 Mientras éstos se alejaban de Jesús, Pedro dijo: «Maestro, ¡qué bueno es para nosotros estar aquí! Vamos a hacer tres cobertizos; uno para ti, otro para Moisés, y otro para Elías.» Pero no sabía lo que decía. 34 Y mientras decía esto, una nube los cubrió, y tuvieron miedo de entrar en la nube. 35 Entonces, desde la nube se oyó una voz que decía: «Éste es mi Hijo amado.(O) ¡Escúchenlo!» 36 Cuando la voz cesó, Jesús se encontraba solo. Pero ellos mantuvieron esto en secreto y, durante aquellos días, no le dijeron a nadie lo que habían visto.
Jesús sana a un muchacho endemoniado(P)
37 Al día siguiente, cuando bajaron del monte, una gran multitud les salió al encuentro, 38 y con fuerte voz un hombre de la multitud le dijo: «Maestro, te ruego que veas a mi hijo. ¡Es el único hijo que tengo! 39 Sucede que un espíritu se apodera de él, y de repente lo sacude con violencia, y lo hace gritar y echar espuma por la boca. Cuando lo atormenta, a duras penas lo deja tranquilo. 40 Yo les pedí a tus discípulos que expulsaran al espíritu, pero no pudieron.» 41 Jesús dijo entonces: «¡Ay, gente incrédula y perversa! ¿Hasta cuándo tendré que estar con ustedes y soportarlos? ¡Trae acá a tu hijo!» 42 Mientras el muchacho se acercaba, el demonio lo derribó y lo sacudió con violencia, pero Jesús reprendió al espíritu impuro, sanó al muchacho, y se lo entregó a su padre. 43 Y todos se admiraban de la grandeza de Dios.
Jesús anuncia otra vez su muerte(Q)
Entre el asombro que causaba todo lo que Jesús hacía, dijo él a sus discípulos: 44 «Pongan mucha atención a estas palabras: El Hijo del Hombre será entregado a los poderes de este mundo.» 45 Pero ellos no las entendieron, pues les estaban veladas para que no las entendieran, y tenían miedo de preguntarle qué querían decir.
¿Quién es el mayor?(R)
46 En cierta ocasión, los discípulos comenzaron a discutir acerca de quién de ellos era el más importante.(S) 47 Cuando Jesús se dio cuenta de lo que estaban pensando, tomó a un niño y, poniéndolo junto a él, 48 les dijo: «Cualquiera que reciba a un niño así en mi nombre, me recibe a mí; y cualquiera que me recibe a mí, recibe al que me envió.(T) Porque el más insignificante entre todos ustedes, es el más grande de ustedes.»
El que no está contra nosotros, está a favor de nosotros(U)
49 Entonces Juan le dijo: «Maestro, hemos visto a uno que expulsaba demonios en tu nombre, pero se lo prohibimos, porque no anda con nosotros.» 50 Jesús le dijo: «No se lo prohíban, porque el que no está contra nosotros, está a favor de nosotros.»
Jesús reprende a Jacobo y a Juan
51 Se acercaba el tiempo en que Jesús había de ser recibido arriba, así que resolvió con firmeza dirigirse a Jerusalén. 52 Envió mensajeros delante de él, y ellos se fueron y entraron en una aldea samaritana para prepararle todo; 53 pero los de allí no lo recibieron porque se dieron cuenta de que su intención era ir a Jerusalén. 54 Al ver esto, sus discípulos Jacobo y Juan dijeron: «Señor, ¿quieres que mandemos que caiga fuego del cielo, como hizo Elías, para que los destruya?»(V) 55 Pero Jesús se volvió y los reprendió. [Y les dijo: «Ustedes no saben de qué espíritu son. 56 Porque el Hijo del Hombre no ha venido a quitarle la vida a nadie, sino a salvársela.»][a] Y se fueron a otra aldea.
Los que querían seguir a Jesús(W)
57 Mientras seguían su camino, alguien le dijo: «Señor, yo te seguiré adondequiera que vayas.» 58 Jesús le dijo: «Las zorras tienen guaridas, y las aves de los cielos tienen nidos, pero el Hijo del Hombre no tiene dónde recostar su cabeza.» 59 Y a otro le dijo: «Sígueme.» Aquél le respondió: «Señor, permíteme ir primero a enterrar a mi padre.» 60 Pero Jesús le dijo: «Deja que los muertos entierren a sus muertos. Tú, ve y anuncia el reino de Dios.» 61 Otro también le dijo: «Señor, yo te seguiré; pero antes déjame despedirme de los que están en mi casa.»(X) 62 Jesús le dijo: «Nadie que mire hacia atrás, después de poner la mano en el arado, es apto para el reino de Dios.»

The Twelve Disciples Sent Out
9 (A)And calling the twelve together, He gave them power and authority over all the demons and to heal diseases. 2 And He sent them out to (B)preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. 3 And He said to them, “(C)Take nothing for your journey, (D)neither a staff, nor a [a]bag, nor bread, nor money; nor have two [b]tunics apiece. 4 And whatever house you enter, stay there [c]until you leave that city. 5 And as for those who do not receive you, as you go out from that city, (E)shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.” 6 And departing, they were going [d]throughout the villages, (F)proclaiming the gospel and healing everywhere.
7 (G)Now (H)Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was happening, and he was greatly perplexed, because it was said by some that (I)John had risen from the dead, 8 and by some that (J)Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the prophets of old had risen again. 9 And Herod said, “I myself had John beheaded, but who is this man about whom I hear such things?” And (K)he kept trying to see Him.
10 (L)And when the apostles returned, they recounted to Him all that they had done. (M)Taking them with Him, He slipped away by Himself to a city called (N)Bethsaida. 11 But when the crowds became aware of this, they followed Him; and welcoming them, He began speaking to them about the kingdom of God and curing those who had need of healing.
Jesus Feeds Five Thousand
12 Now the day [e]was ending, and the twelve came and said to Him, “Send the crowd away, that they may go into the surrounding villages and countryside and obtain lodging and find provisions, for here we are in a desolate place.” 13 But He said to them, “You give them something to eat!” And they said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless perhaps we go and buy food for all these people.” 14 (For there were about five thousand men.) And He said to His disciples, “Have them [f]sit down (O)in groups of about fifty each.” 15 And they did so, and had them all [g]sit down. 16 Then He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed them. And He broke them and kept giving them to the disciples to set before the crowd. 17 And they all ate and were satisfied; and [h]the broken pieces which they had left over were picked up, twelve (P)baskets full.
Peter Confesses Jesus Is the Christ
18 (Q)And it happened that while He was (R)praying alone, the disciples were with Him, and He questioned them, saying, “Who do the crowds say that I am?” 19 And they answered and said, “John the Baptist, and others say Elijah, but others, that one of the prophets of old has risen again.” 20 And He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” And Peter answered and said, “(S)The [i]Christ of God.” 21 But He [j](T)warned them and directed them not to tell this to anyone, 22 (U)saying, “(V)The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed and be raised up on the third day.”
Take Up Your Cross
23 And He was saying to them all, “(W)If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me. 24 For (X)whoever wishes to save his [k]life will lose it, but whoever loses his [l]life for My sake, he is the one who will save it. 25 For what is a man profited if he gains the whole world, and (Y)loses or forfeits himself? 26 (Z)For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in His glory, and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. 27 But I say to you truthfully, (AA)there are some of those standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.”
The Transfiguration
28 (AB)Now it happened some eight days after these words, that taking along (AC)Peter and John and James, He (AD)went up on the mountain (AE)to pray. 29 And it happened that while He was (AF)praying, the appearance of His face (AG)became different, and His clothing became white and [m]gleaming. 30 And behold, two men were talking with Him, and they were Moses and Elijah, 31 who, appearing in [n]glory, were speaking of His [o](AH)departure which He was about to fulfill at Jerusalem. 32 Now Peter and his companions (AI)had been overcome with sleep, but when they were fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men standing with Him. 33 And it happened that as they were leaving Him, Peter said to Jesus, “(AJ)Master, it is good for us to be here; (AK)let us make three [p]booths: one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah”—(AL)not realizing what he was saying. 34 While he was saying this, a cloud [q]formed and began to overshadow them; and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 Then (AM)a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “(AN)This is My Son, My Chosen One; listen to Him!” 36 And when the voice [r]had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And (AO)they kept silent, and reported to no one in those days any of the things which they had seen.
Jesus Casts Out a Demon
37 (AP)Now it happened on the next day, that when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met Him. 38 And behold, a man from the crowd shouted, saying, “Teacher, I beg You to look at my son, for he is my [s]only one, 39 and behold, a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly screams, and it throws him into a convulsion with foaming at the mouth, and only with difficulty does it leave him, mauling him as it leaves. 40 And I begged Your disciples to cast it out, and they could not.” 41 And Jesus answered and said, “You unbelieving and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you and put up with you? Bring your son here.” 42 Now while he was still approaching, the demon [t]slammed him to the ground and threw him into a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit and healed the boy and gave him back to his father. 43 And they were all astonished at the (AQ)majesty of God.
Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection
(AR)But while everyone was marveling at all that He was doing, He said to His disciples, 44 “Put these words into your ears; (AS)for the Son of Man is going to be [u]delivered into the hands of men.” 45 But (AT)they [v]did not understand this statement, and it was concealed from them so that they would not perceive it, and they were afraid to ask Him about this statement.
Who Is the Greatest?
46 (AU)Now an argument [w]started among them as to which of them might be the greatest. 47 But Jesus, (AV)knowing [x]what they were thinking in their heart, took a child and stood him by His side, 48 and said to them, “(AW)Whoever receives this child in My name receives Me, and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me; (AX)for the one who is least among all of you, this is the one who is great.”
49 (AY)And John answered and said, “(AZ)Master, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name, and we tried to hinder him because he does not follow along with us.” 50 But Jesus said to him, “Do not hinder him, (BA)for he who is not against you is [y]for you.”
51 Now it happened that when the days for (BB)Him to be taken up were soon to be fulfilled, He set His face (BC)to go to Jerusalem; 52 and He sent messengers on ahead of Him, and they went and entered a village of the (BD)Samaritans to [z]make arrangements for Him. 53 But they did not receive Him, (BE)because [aa]He was journeying with His face toward Jerusalem. 54 And when His disciples (BF)James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do You want us to (BG)command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?” 55 But He turned and rebuked them, [ab][and said, “You do not know what kind of spirit you are of, 56 for the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them.”] And they went on to another village.
The Cost of Following Jesus
57 (BH)And as they were going along the road, (BI)someone said to Him, “I will follow You wherever You go.” 58 And Jesus said to him, “The foxes have holes and the birds of the [ac]air have [ad]nests, but (BJ)the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” 59 And He said to another, “(BK)Follow Me.” But he said, “Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father.” 60 But He said to him, “Allow the dead to bury their own dead; but as for you, go and (BL)proclaim everywhere the kingdom of God.” 61 Another also said, “I will follow You, Lord, but (BM)first permit me to say farewell to those at home.” 62 But Jesus said to him, “(BN)No one, after putting his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”

差遣十二使徒
9 耶稣召集了十二个使徒，赐他们能力和权柄可以医病赶鬼， 2 又差遣他们出去宣讲上帝国的福音、医治病人。 3 耶稣叮嘱他们：“出门的时候，什么也不要带，不要带手杖、背包、干粮、金钱，也不要带两件衣服。 4 有人家接待你们，就住下来，一直住到你们离开。 5 如果有人不欢迎你们，你们在离开那城的时候，就把脚上的尘土跺掉，作为对他们的警告。”
6 使徒领命出发，走遍各个乡村，到处宣扬福音，替人治病。
希律的困惑
7 耶稣的事迹很快便传到希律耳中，令他十分困惑，因为有人说：“约翰死而复活了”， 8 有人说：“以利亚显现了”，还有人说：“古代的某个先知复活了”。 9 希律说：“约翰已经被我斩首，这个行奇事的人到底是谁呢？”于是他想见耶稣。
五饼二鱼的神迹
10 使徒回来后，向耶稣报告了他们所行的事。随后耶稣带着他们悄悄地来到伯赛大城。 11 但百姓发现了耶稣的行踪，随即也赶来了。耶稣接待他们，向他们宣讲天国的福音，医好了有病的人。 12 黄昏将近，十二个使徒过来对耶稣说：“请遣散众人，好让他们到附近的村庄去借宿找吃的，因为这地方很偏僻。”
13 耶稣对他们说：“你们给他们吃的吧。”
使徒们说：“我们只有五个饼和两条鱼，除非我们去买食物才够这么一大群人吃。” 14 当时那里约有五千男人。
耶稣便对使徒说：“让这些人分组坐下，每组大约五十人。” 15 于是使徒安排众人都坐好。 16 耶稣拿起那五个饼、两条鱼，举目望着天祝谢后，掰开递给门徒，让他们分给众人。 17 大家都吃饱了，把剩下的零碎收拾起来，竟装满了十二个篮子。
彼得宣告耶稣是基督
18 有一次，耶稣独自祷告的时候，门徒也在旁边。
耶稣问他们：“人们说我是谁？”
19 他们答道：“有人说你是施洗者约翰，也有人说你是以利亚，或是一位复活的古代先知。”
20 耶稣对他们说：“那么，你们说我是谁？”
彼得回答说：“你是上帝所立的基督。”
21 耶稣郑重地吩咐他们不许泄露祂的身份， 22 又说：“人子必须受许多苦，被长老、祭司长和律法教师弃绝，杀害，但必在第三天复活。”
跟从主的代价
23 耶稣又教导众人说：“如果有人要跟从我，就应当舍己，天天背起他的十字架跟从我。 24 因为想救自己生命的，必失去生命；但为了我而失去生命的，必得到生命。 25 人若赚得全世界，却失去自己或丧掉自己，又有什么益处呢？ 26 如果有人以我和我的道为耻，将来人子在自己、天父和圣天使的荣耀中降临时，也必以这人为耻。 27 我实在告诉你们，有些站在这里的人在有生之年就必看见上帝的国。”
登山变象
28 讲完这些话后大约八天，耶稣带着彼得、约翰和雅各一同到山上祷告。 29 耶稣在祷告的时候，容貌改变了，衣裳洁白发光。 30 忽然，摩西和以利亚二人在跟耶稣交谈。 31 二人在荣光中显现，谈论有关耶稣离世的事情，就是祂在耶路撒冷将要成就的事。 32 彼得和两个同伴都困得睡着了，他们醒来后，看见了耶稣的荣光以及站在祂身边的两个人。 33 当摩西和以利亚要离开时，彼得对耶稣说：“老师，我们在这里真好！让我们搭三座帐篷，一座给你，一座给摩西，一座给以利亚。”其实彼得并不知道自己在说什么。 34 他的话还没说完，有一朵云彩飘来，笼罩他们，他们进入云彩中，都很害怕。 35 云彩中有声音说：“这是我的儿子，是我拣选的，你们要听从祂！” 36 声音消逝了，门徒只见耶稣独自在那里。那些日子，他们对这事都绝口不提，没有告诉任何人。
山下赶鬼
37 次日，他们来到山下，有一大群人迎接耶稣。 38 人群中有一个人高声喊叫：“老师，求求你看看我的儿子吧！他是我的独生子， 39 鬼控制着他，他常常突然狂喊乱叫、抽搐、口吐白沫，倍受折磨，无休无止。 40 我曾求过你的门徒把鬼赶出去，但他们都无能为力。”
41 耶稣回答说：“唉！这又不信又败坏的世代啊！我要跟你们在一起容忍你们多久呢？把你的儿子带来吧。”
42 那孩子走过来时，鬼又把他摔倒，使他抽搐，耶稣立刻斥责污鬼，把那孩子治好了，交给他父亲。 43 大家看见了上帝的大能，都很惊奇。
再次预言受难
他们正为耶稣所做的一切惊讶不已时，耶稣对门徒说： 44 “你们要牢记人子所说的话，因为祂将要被交到人的手里。” 45 但门徒不明白这句话的意思，因为还没有向他们显明，他们听不懂，又不敢追问耶稣。
论地位
46 门徒开始议论他们当中谁最伟大。 47 耶稣知道他们的心思，就叫了一个小孩子来，让他站在自己身旁， 48 然后对门徒说：“任何人为了我的缘故接待这样一个小孩子，就是接待我；接待我，就是接待差我来的那位。你们当中最卑微的其实是最伟大的。”
49 约翰说：“老师，我们看见有人奉你的名赶鬼，就阻止他，因为他不是和我们一起跟从你的。” 50 耶稣却对他说：“你不要阻止他，因为不反对你们的，就是支持你们的。”
不肯接待耶稣的村庄
51 耶稣被接回天家的日子快到了，祂决定前往耶路撒冷。 52 祂先派人到撒玛利亚的一个村庄去预备食宿， 53 但撒玛利亚人见他们是上耶路撒冷去的，不肯接待他们。 54 祂的门徒雅各和约翰见状，说：“主啊，你要我们[a]叫天上的火降下来烧死他们吗？” 55 耶稣转过身来责备他们[b]。 56 接着，一行人改道去另一个村子。
跟从主的代价
57 在路上有人对耶稣说：“无论你往哪里去，我都要跟从你。”
58 耶稣对他说：“狐狸有洞，飞鸟有窝，人子却没有安枕之处。”
59 耶稣又对另一个人说：“跟从我！”但是那人说：“主啊，请让我先回去安葬我的父亲。”

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve(A)(B)
9 When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons(C) and to cure diseases,(D) 2 and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God(E) and to heal the sick. 3 He told them: “Take nothing for the journey—no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra shirt.(F) 4 Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town. 5 If people do not welcome you, leave their town and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.”(G) 6 So they set out and went from village to village, proclaiming the good news and healing people everywhere.
7 Now Herod(H) the tetrarch heard about all that was going on. And he was perplexed because some were saying that John(I) had been raised from the dead,(J) 8 others that Elijah had appeared,(K) and still others that one of the prophets of long ago had come back to life.(L) 9 But Herod said, “I beheaded John. Who, then, is this I hear such things about?” And he tried to see him.(M)
Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand(N)(O)
10 When the apostles(P) returned, they reported to Jesus what they had done. Then he took them with him and they withdrew by themselves to a town called Bethsaida,(Q) 11 but the crowds learned about it and followed him. He welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God,(R) and healed those who needed healing.
12 Late in the afternoon the Twelve came to him and said, “Send the crowd away so they can go to the surrounding villages and countryside and find food and lodging, because we are in a remote place here.”
13 He replied, “You give them something to eat.”
They answered, “We have only five loaves of bread and two fish—unless we go and buy food for all this crowd.” 14 (About five thousand men were there.)
But he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.” 15 The disciples did so, and everyone sat down. 16 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them.(S) Then he gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people. 17 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah(T)(U)
18 Once when Jesus was praying(V) in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say I am?”
19 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist;(W) others say Elijah; and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life.”(X)
20 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
Peter answered, “God’s Messiah.”(Y)
Jesus Predicts His Death
21 Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this to anyone.(Z) 22 And he said, “The Son of Man(AA) must suffer many things(AB) and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law,(AC) and he must be killed(AD) and on the third day(AE) be raised to life.”(AF)
23 Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.(AG) 24 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.(AH) 25 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self? 26 Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them(AI) when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.(AJ)
27 “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.”
The Transfiguration(AK)
28 About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James(AL) with him and went up onto a mountain to pray.(AM) 29 As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. 30 Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. 31 They spoke about his departure,[a](AN) which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. 32 Peter and his companions were very sleepy,(AO) but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. 33 As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, “Master,(AP) it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what he was saying.)
34 While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and covered them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen;(AQ) listen to him.”(AR) 36 When the voice had spoken, they found that Jesus was alone. The disciples kept this to themselves and did not tell anyone at that time what they had seen.(AS)
Jesus Heals a Demon-Possessed Boy(AT)
37 The next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met him. 38 A man in the crowd called out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child. 39 A spirit seizes him and he suddenly screams; it throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. It scarcely ever leaves him and is destroying him. 40 I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they could not.”
41 “You unbelieving and perverse generation,”(AU) Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you and put up with you? Bring your son here.”
42 Even while the boy was coming, the demon threw him to the ground in a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the impure spirit, healed the boy and gave him back to his father. 43 And they were all amazed at the greatness of God.
Jesus Predicts His Death a Second Time
While everyone was marveling at all that Jesus did, he said to his disciples, 44 “Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you: The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.”(AV) 45 But they did not understand what this meant. It was hidden from them, so that they did not grasp it,(AW) and they were afraid to ask him about it.
46 An argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest.(AX) 47 Jesus, knowing their thoughts,(AY) took a little child and had him stand beside him. 48 Then he said to them, “Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.(AZ) For it is the one who is least among you all who is the greatest.”(BA)
49 “Master,”(BB) said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us.”
50 “Do not stop him,” Jesus said, “for whoever is not against you is for you.”(BC)
Samaritan Opposition
51 As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven,(BD) Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.(BE) 52 And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan(BF) village to get things ready for him; 53 but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. 54 When the disciples James and John(BG) saw this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them[b]?”(BH) 55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them. 56 Then he and his disciples went to another village.
The Cost of Following Jesus(BI)
57 As they were walking along the road,(BJ) a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.”
58 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man(BK) has no place to lay his head.”
59 He said to another man, “Follow me.”(BL)
But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”
60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”(BM)
61 Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.”(BN)
62 Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”
