La autoridad de Jesús
20 Jesús estaba en el templo enseñando a la gente y anunciando las buenas noticias. Los sacerdotes principales, los maestros de la Ley y los líderes del país se acercaron 2 y le preguntaron:
—¿Quién te dio autoridad para hacer todo esto?
3 Jesús les contestó:
—Yo también voy a preguntarles algo: 4 ¿Quién le dio autoridad a Juan el Bautista para bautizar? ¿Dios, o alguna otra persona?
5 Ellos comenzaron a discutir, y se decían unos a otros: «Si contestamos que fue Dios quien le dio autoridad a Juan, Jesús nos preguntará por qué no le creímos. 6 Y si decimos que fue un ser humano, la gente nos matará a pedradas, porque creen que Juan era un profeta enviado por Dios.» 7 Entonces respondieron:
—No sabemos quién le dio autoridad a Juan.
8 Jesús les dijo:
—Pues yo tampoco les diré quién me da autoridad para hacer todo esto.
La viña alquilada
9 Jesús le puso a la gente este ejemplo:
«El dueño de un terreno sembró una viña, luego la alquiló y se fue de viaje por largo tiempo. 10 Cuando llegó la época de la cosecha, envió a un sirviente para pedir la parte que le correspondía. Pero los hombres que alquilaron la viña golpearon al sirviente y lo enviaron con las manos vacías.
11 »El dueño envió a otro sirviente, pero también a éste lo golpearon, lo insultaron y lo enviaron sin nada. 12 Luego envió a otro, y a éste también lo hirieron y lo echaron fuera de la viña.
13 »Finalmente, el dueño se puso a pensar: “¿Qué puedo hacer?” Y se dijo: “Ya sé; enviaré a mi hijo que tanto quiero. Estoy seguro que a él sí lo respetarán.”
14 »Cuando aquellos hombres vieron que había llegado el hijo del dueño, se dijeron unos a otros: “Este muchacho es el que recibirá la viña cuando el dueño muera. Vamos a matarlo; así nos quedaremos con el terreno.”
15 »Entonces agarraron al muchacho, lo sacaron del terreno y lo mataron.»
Después Jesús preguntó:
—¿Qué piensan ustedes que hará el dueño con aquellos hombres? 16 Seguramente, cuando regrese, los matará y luego entregará la viña a otras personas.
Cuando la gente oyó eso, dijo:
—¡Eso, jamás!
17 Jesús miró a todos y les dijo:
—Entonces, cuando la Biblia dice:
“La piedra que rechazaron
los constructores del templo
es ahora la piedra principal”,
»¿qué quiso decir con eso? 18 Porque todo el que caiga sobre esa piedra quedará hecho pedazos. Y si la piedra cae sobre alguien, lo dejará hecho polvo.»
19 Los sacerdotes principales y los maestros de la Ley se dieron cuenta de que Jesús los estaba comparando con los hombres malos que alquilaron la viña. Entonces quisieron apresar a Jesús en ese mismo instante, pero no se atrevieron porque le tenían miedo a la gente.
Una trampa para Jesús
20 Los enemigos de Jesús querían arrestarlo y entregarlo al gobernador romano. Pero, como no tenían de qué acusarlo, enviaron a unos espías para que se hicieran pasar por personas buenas y vigilaran en qué momento Jesús decía algo malo.
21 Los espías le dijeron a Jesús:
—Maestro, sabemos que siempre dices la verdad. Tú enseñas que todos deben obedecer a Dios, y tratas a todos por igual. 22 Por eso te preguntamos: ¿Está bien que paguemos impuestos al emperador de Roma, o no?
23 Como Jesús sabía que ellos querían ponerle una trampa, les respondió:
24 —Muéstrenme una moneda. ¿De quién es la imagen que está en la moneda? ¿De quién es el nombre que tiene escrito?
Ellos contestaron:
—Del emperador de Roma.
25 Jesús les dijo:
—Pues denle al emperador lo que es del emperador, y a Dios lo que es de Dios.
26 Los espías no lograron que Jesús cayera en la trampa. Quedaron sorprendidos por su respuesta y no supieron decir nada más.
Los saduceos hablan con Jesús
27 Después, unos saduceos fueron a ver a Jesús. Como ellos no creían que los muertos pueden volver a vivir, 28 le preguntaron:
—Maestro, Moisés escribió que, si un hombre muere sin tener hijos con su esposa, el hermano de ese hombre debe casarse con esa mujer y tener hijos con ella. De acuerdo con la ley, esos hijos son del hermano muerto y llevan su nombre.
29 »Pues bien, aquí vivían siete hermanos. El hermano mayor se casó y, tiempo más tarde, murió sin tener hijos. 30 El segundo hermano se casó con la misma mujer, pero tiempo después también él murió sin tener hijos. 31 Lo mismo sucedió con el tercer hermano y con el resto de los siete hermanos. 32 El tiempo pasó y la mujer también murió.
33 »Ahora bien, cuando Dios haga que todos los muertos vuelvan a vivir, ¿de quién será esposa esta mujer, si estuvo casada con los siete?
34 Jesús contestó:
—Ahora los hombres y las mujeres se casan. 35 Pero Dios decidirá quiénes merecen volver a vivir. Cuando eso suceda, nadie se casará 36 ni morirá. Todos serán como los ángeles, y por haber vuelto a vivir serán hijos de Dios. 37 Hasta Moisés mismo nos demuestra que los muertos vuelven a vivir. En la historia del arbusto que ardía,[a] Moisés dijo que Dios es el Dios de sus antepasados Abraham, Isaac y Jacob. 38 Con eso, Moisés estaba demostrando que Dios no es Dios de muertos, sino de vivos, pues para Dios todos ellos están vivos.[b]
39 Algunos maestros de la Ley que estaban allí dijeron:
—¡Maestro, diste una buena respuesta!
40 Después de esto, ya nadie se atrevía a hacerle más preguntas.
La pregunta acerca del Mesías
41 Jesús preguntó a los que estaban allí:
—¿Por qué dice la gente que el Mesías será un descendiente del rey David? 42 Si en el libro de los Salmos el mismo David dice:
“Dios le dijo a mi Señor el Mesías:
‘Siéntate a la derecha de mi trono,
43 hasta que yo derrote a tus enemigos.’”
44 »Si David llama Señor al Mesías, ¿cómo puede ser el Mesías descendiente de David?
Advertencia
45 Delante de toda la gente, Jesús les dijo a sus discípulos:
46 —¡Cuídense de los maestros de la Ley! A ellos les gusta vestir como gente importante, y que los saluden en el mercado con mucho respeto. Cuando van a una fiesta o a la sinagoga, les gusta ocupar los mejores puestos. 47 Ellos les quitan a las viudas sus casas, y luego hacen oraciones muy largas para que todos piensen que son gente buena. Pero Dios los castigará más duro que a los demás.

20 Sucedió un día, que enseñando Jesús al pueblo en el templo, y anunciando el evangelio, llegaron los principales sacerdotes y los escribas, con los ancianos, 2 y le hablaron diciendo: Dinos: ¿con qué autoridad haces estas cosas?, ¿o quién es el que te ha dado esta autoridad? 3 Respondiendo Jesús, les dijo: Os haré yo también una pregunta; respondedme: 4 El bautismo de Juan, ¿era del cielo, o de los hombres? 5 Entonces ellos discutían entre sí, diciendo: Si decimos, del cielo, dirá: ¿Por qué, pues, no le creísteis? 6 Y si decimos, de los hombres, todo el pueblo nos apedreará; porque están persuadidos de que Juan era profeta. 7 Y respondieron que no sabían de dónde fuese. 8 Entonces Jesús les dijo: Yo tampoco os diré con qué autoridad hago estas cosas.
Los labradores malvados

9 Comenzó luego a decir al pueblo esta parábola: Un hombre plantó una viña,(A) la arrendó a labradores, y se ausentó por mucho tiempo. 10 Y a su tiempo envió un siervo a los labradores, para que le diesen del fruto de la viña; pero los labradores le golpearon, y le enviaron con las manos vacías. 11 Volvió a enviar otro siervo; mas ellos a este también, golpeado y afrentado, le enviaron con las manos vacías. 12 Volvió a enviar un tercer siervo; mas ellos también a este echaron fuera, herido. 13 Entonces el señor de la viña dijo: ¿Qué haré? Enviaré a mi hijo amado; quizá cuando le vean a él, le tendrán respeto. 14 Mas los labradores, al verle, discutían entre sí, diciendo: Este es el heredero; venid, matémosle, para que la heredad sea nuestra. 15 Y le echaron fuera de la viña, y le mataron. ¿Qué, pues, les hará el señor de la viña? 16 Vendrá y destruirá a estos labradores, y dará su viña a otros. Cuando ellos oyeron esto, dijeron: ¡Dios nos libre! 17 Pero él, mirándolos, dijo: ¿Qué, pues, es lo que está escrito:
La piedra que desecharon los edificadores
Ha venido a ser cabeza del ángulo?(B)
18 Todo el que cayere sobre aquella piedra, será quebrantado; mas sobre quien ella cayere, le desmenuzará.
La cuestión del tributo

19 Procuraban los principales sacerdotes y los escribas echarle mano en aquella hora, porque comprendieron que contra ellos había dicho esta parábola; pero temieron al pueblo. 20 Y acechándole enviaron espías que se simulasen justos, a fin de sorprenderle en alguna palabra, para entregarle al poder y autoridad del gobernador. 21 Y le preguntaron, diciendo: Maestro, sabemos que dices y enseñas rectamente, y que no haces acepción de persona, sino que enseñas el camino de Dios con verdad. 22 ¿Nos es lícito dar tributo a César, o no? 23 Mas él, comprendiendo la astucia de ellos, les dijo: ¿Por qué me tentáis? 24 Mostradme la moneda. ¿De quién tiene la imagen y la inscripción? Y respondiendo dijeron: De César. 25 Entonces les dijo: Pues dad a César lo que es de César, y a Dios lo que es de Dios. 26 Y no pudieron sorprenderle en palabra alguna delante del pueblo, sino que maravillados de su respuesta, callaron.
La pregunta sobre la resurrección

27 Llegando entonces algunos de los saduceos, los cuales niegan haber resurrección,(C) le preguntaron, 28 diciendo: Maestro, Moisés nos escribió: Si el hermano de alguno muriere teniendo mujer, y no dejare hijos, que su hermano se case con ella, y levante descendencia a su hermano.(D) 29 Hubo, pues, siete hermanos; y el primero tomó esposa, y murió sin hijos. 30 Y la tomó el segundo, el cual también murió sin hijos. 31 La tomó el tercero, y así todos los siete, y murieron sin dejar descendencia. 32 Finalmente murió también la mujer. 33 En la resurrección, pues, ¿de cuál de ellos será mujer, ya que los siete la tuvieron por mujer?
34 Entonces respondiendo Jesús, les dijo: Los hijos de este siglo se casan, y se dan en casamiento; 35 mas los que fueren tenidos por dignos de alcanzar aquel siglo y la resurrección de entre los muertos, ni se casan, ni se dan en casamiento. 36 Porque no pueden ya más morir, pues son iguales a los ángeles, y son hijos de Dios, al ser hijos de la resurrección. 37 Pero en cuanto a que los muertos han de resucitar, aun Moisés lo enseñó en el pasaje de la zarza, cuando llama al Señor, Dios de Abraham, Dios de Isaac y Dios de Jacob.(E) 38 Porque Dios no es Dios de muertos, sino de vivos, pues para él todos viven. 39 Respondiéndole algunos de los escribas, dijeron: Maestro, bien has dicho. 40 Y no osaron preguntarle nada más.
¿De quién es hijo el Cristo?

41 Entonces él les dijo: ¿Cómo dicen que el Cristo es hijo de David? 42 Pues el mismo David dice en el libro de los Salmos:
Dijo el Señor a mi Señor:
Siéntate a mi diestra,
43 Hasta que ponga a tus enemigos por estrado de tus pies.(F)
44 David, pues, le llama Señor; ¿cómo entonces es su hijo?
Jesús acusa a los escribas

Jesus talks about his authority
20 One day, Jesus was teaching people in the yard of the temple. He was telling people the good news about God. Then the leaders of the priests and the teachers of God's Law came to him. With them were some other important Jews. 2 They asked him, ‘Tell us what authority you have to do these things? Who gave you the authority to do them?’
3 Jesus replied, ‘I also will ask you a question. Tell me the answer. 4 John baptized people. Did God give him the authority to do this? Or did men tell him to do it?’
5 The Jewish leaders talked to each other about Jesus' question. ‘We could say that God gave John his authority. But if we say that, Jesus will say to us, “Then you should have believed John.” 6 But we do not want to say that only men gave John his authority. Then all the people would throw stones at us to kill us. They are sure that John really was a prophet from God.’ 7 So the Jewish leaders answered Jesus, ‘We do not know who gave John his authority.’
8 Jesus said to them, ‘You will not answer my question. So I will not tell you what authority I have to do these things.’
Jesus tells a story about farmers
9 Then Jesus began to tell this story to the people. He said, ‘A man planted vines in his garden to grow grapes there. He found some farmers to work in the garden for him. Then he went away to another country and he stayed there for a long time.
10 At the time for the harvest, the man sent a servant to speak to the farmers. He wanted them to give him some fruit from the garden.
But the farmers hit the servant with sticks and they sent him away with nothing.
11 The master sent another servant to go to the farmers. They hit him with sticks too, and they did other bad things to him. They also sent him away with nothing. 12 The master then sent a third servant to the farmers. They hurt him badly too, and they threw him out of the garden.
13 Then the master of the garden said to himself, “I know what I will do. I will send my own son to go to them. I love him very much. Perhaps they will respect him.” 14 But the farmers saw him coming. They said to each other, “This is the son of our master. When our master dies, the garden will belong to his son. So we should kill the son and then the garden will be ours.”
15 So they threw the son out of the garden and they killed him.’
Jesus went on to ask, ‘Then what will the master of the garden do to those farmers? 16 I tell you, he will come to those farmers and he will kill them. Then he will give the garden to other people to take care of it.’
When the people heard this, they replied, ‘That must never happen!’[a]
17 Jesus then looked at the people and he said, ‘You say that this must not happen. But you have read this in the Bible and you should know what it means:
“The builders refused to use a certain stone.
They thought that it had no value.
But now that stone has become the most important stone at the corner of the building.[b]
18 When a person falls onto that stone, it will break his body into pieces. When that stone falls on top of someone, it will destroy him completely.” ’
The leaders ask Jesus a question
19 The teachers of God's Law and the leaders of the priests knew that Jesus had told this story about them. They were the bad farmers in the story. So they wanted to take hold of Jesus immediately. But they did not do it, because they were afraid of the people.
20 So this is what they did to catch Jesus. They sent people to ask him difficult questions. These people pretended to be honest, but they wanted to deceive Jesus. They wanted to make him say something wrong. Then they would take him to the ruler of the city to punish him. 21 So these people went to Jesus. They said, ‘Teacher, everything that you say and everything that you teach is right. We know that. You teach everyone the same true message about what God wants us to do. You do not say something different to an important person to make him happy. 22 So tell us your answer to this question: Should we pay our taxes to the Roman ruler, Caesar? Is it right to give that money to him, or not?’
23 Jesus knew that those men were not really honest. They wanted to make him say the wrong thing. 24 So he said to them, ‘Show me a coin. Tell me, whose picture is on this coin? Whose name is on it?’ 25 The men replied, ‘It is Caesar's picture and Caesar's name.’ Jesus then said to them, ‘So you should give to Caesar the things that belong to him. And give to God the things that belong to God.’
26 So the Jewish leaders could not make Jesus say anything wrong. They were very surprised at his answer to their question. They could not say anything more against him. All the people who were there saw this.
The Sadducees ask Jesus a question
27 Then some of the Sadducees came to see Jesus. The Sadducees do not believe that anyone becomes alive again after they die.
28 They wanted to ask Jesus a question. ‘Teacher,’ they said to him, ‘Moses wrote this in the Bible for us: “A man may die and leave a wife but no children. Then that man's brother must marry the woman. Then their children will be called the children of the brother who died.” 29 But once there were seven brothers. The oldest brother married a woman. Then he died before they had any children. 30 So the second brother married this woman. But he also died without children. 31 Then the third brother married the woman. The same thing happened to all seven brothers. They all died but they had no children. 32 After all this, the woman also died. 33 You teach that one day dead people will become alive again. So, on that day, whose wife will the woman be? She had married all seven of those brothers.’
34 Jesus answered them, ‘Men and women who are alive on earth are the ones who get married. 35 But God has chosen some people to live again with him. He will raise them up after they have died. Those people will not marry. They will not have husbands or wives, 36 and they cannot die any more. This is because they will live as the angels live in heaven. They are children of God. He has made them alive again to live with him. 37 It is true that God makes dead people become alive again. Moses showed us this in his report about the bush in the wilderness. He told us that our Lord God is the God of Abraham. He is the God of Isaac. And he is the God of Jacob.[c] 38 But God is not the God of people who are dead. He is the God of people who are alive. For God, all people continue to be alive.’
39 Some of the teachers of God's Law agreed with Jesus. ‘Teacher,’ they said, ‘that was a very good answer.’ 40 After that, they were all afraid to ask Jesus any more questions.
The Messiah is someone that King David calls his Lord
41 Jesus said to them, ‘Why do people say that the Messiah will be King David's son? 42 David himself said this in the book called Psalms:[d]
“The Lord God said to my Lord,
Sit at my right side until I win against your enemies.
43 Then you will be able to put your feet on them.”
44 You see here that David calls the Messiah his Lord. So can you really say that the Messiah is David's son?’
Jesus speaks against the teachers of God's Law
45 All the people were listening to Jesus. Jesus then said to his disciples, 46 ‘Be careful not to do the same as the teachers of God's Law. They want people to think that they are important. So they walk about in beautiful long clothes. They like people to praise them in the market place. They choose to sit in the best seats in the meeting place. They like to sit in the most important places at special meals. 47 They take things away from women after their husbands have died, even their houses. Then they pray for a long time so that other people will praise them. Because they do these things, God will punish those men much more than other people.’

- 20:16 In this story, God is the master of the field and Jesus is his Son. The people are like the vines. And their leaders who refused to obey God are like the farmers. The servants are the men that received messages from God for his people. Jesus said that God would destroy those important leaders. Those leaders did not like it when he said that.

The Authority of Jesus Questioned(A)
20 One day as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple courts(B) and proclaiming the good news,(C) the chief priests and the teachers of the law, together with the elders, came up to him. 2 “Tell us by what authority you are doing these things,” they said. “Who gave you this authority?”(D)
3 He replied, “I will also ask you a question. Tell me: 4 John’s baptism(E)—was it from heaven, or of human origin?”
5 They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Why didn’t you believe him?’ 6 But if we say, ‘Of human origin,’ all the people(F) will stone us, because they are persuaded that John was a prophet.”(G)
7 So they answered, “We don’t know where it was from.”
8 Jesus said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”
The Parable of the Tenants(H)
9 He went on to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard,(I) rented it to some farmers and went away for a long time.(J) 10 At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants so they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 11 He sent another servant, but that one also they beat and treated shamefully and sent away empty-handed. 12 He sent still a third, and they wounded him and threw him out.
13 “Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my son, whom I love;(K) perhaps they will respect him.’
14 “But when the tenants saw him, they talked the matter over. ‘This is the heir,’ they said. ‘Let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ 15 So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.
“What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16 He will come and kill those tenants(L) and give the vineyard to others.”
When the people heard this, they said, “God forbid!”
17 Jesus looked directly at them and asked, “Then what is the meaning of that which is written:
18 Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed.”(N)
19 The teachers of the law and the chief priests looked for a way to arrest him(O) immediately, because they knew he had spoken this parable against them. But they were afraid of the people.(P)
Paying Taxes to Caesar(Q)
20 Keeping a close watch on him, they sent spies, who pretended to be sincere. They hoped to catch Jesus in something he said,(R) so that they might hand him over to the power and authority of the governor.(S) 21 So the spies questioned him: “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach what is right, and that you do not show partiality but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth.(T) 22 Is it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”
23 He saw through their duplicity and said to them, 24 “Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription are on it?”
“Caesar’s,” they replied.
25 He said to them, “Then give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s,(U) and to God what is God’s.”
26 They were unable to trap him in what he had said there in public. And astonished by his answer, they became silent.
The Resurrection and Marriage(V)
27 Some of the Sadducees,(W) who say there is no resurrection,(X) came to Jesus with a question. 28 “Teacher,” they said, “Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.(Y) 29 Now there were seven brothers. The first one married a woman and died childless. 30 The second 31 and then the third married her, and in the same way the seven died, leaving no children. 32 Finally, the woman died too. 33 Now then, at the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?”
34 Jesus replied, “The people of this age marry and are given in marriage. 35 But those who are considered worthy of taking part in the age to come(Z) and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage, 36 and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God’s children,(AA) since they are children of the resurrection. 37 But in the account of the burning bush, even Moses showed that the dead rise, for he calls the Lord ‘the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’[b](AB) 38 He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.”
39 Some of the teachers of the law responded, “Well said, teacher!” 40 And no one dared to ask him any more questions.(AC)
Whose Son Is the Messiah?(AD)
41 Then Jesus said to them, “Why is it said that the Messiah is the son of David?(AE) 42 David himself declares in the Book of Psalms:
“‘The Lord said to my Lord:
“Sit at my right hand
43 until I make your enemies
a footstool for your feet.”’[c](AF)
44 David calls him ‘Lord.’ How then can he be his son?”
Warning Against the Teachers of the Law
45 While all the people were listening, Jesus said to his disciples, 46 “Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.(AG) 47 They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.”
