³⁰ “‘A tithe^(A) of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the Lord; it is holy^(B) to the Lord.

¹² All Judah brought the tithes^(A) of grain, new wine and olive oil into the storerooms.^(B)

²² and^[a] this stone that I have set up as a pillar^(A) will be God’s house,^(B) and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth.^(C)”

²³ “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth^(A) of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness.^(B) You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.

⁸ “Will a mere mortal rob^(A) God? Yet you rob me.

“But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you?’

“In tithes^(B) and offerings. ⁹ You are under a curse^(C)—your whole nation—because you are robbing me. ¹⁰ Bring the whole tithe^(D) into the storehouse,^(E) that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates^(F) of heaven and pour out^(G) so much blessing^(H) that there will not be room enough to store it.^(I)

⁵ As soon as the order went out, the Israelites generously gave the firstfruits^(A) of their grain, new wine,^(B) olive oil and honey and all that the fields produced. They brought a great amount, a tithe of everything. ⁶ The people of Israel and Judah who lived in the towns of Judah also brought a tithe^(C) of their herds and flocks and a tithe of the holy things dedicated to the Lord their God, and they piled them in heaps.^(D)

Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.^(B)

⁵ Now the law requires the descendants of Levi who become priests to collect a tenth from the people^(A)—that is, from their fellow Israelites—even though they also are descended from Abraham. ⁶ This man, however, did not trace his descent from Levi, yet he collected a tenth from Abraham and blessed^(B) him who had the promises.^{(C) 7} And without doubt the lesser is blessed by the greater. ⁸ In the one case, the tenth is collected by people who die; but in the other case, by him who is declared to be living.^{(D) 9} One might even say that Levi, who collects the tenth, paid the tenth through Abraham,
