^8 (A)Five of you shall chase a hundred, and a hundred of you shall chase ten thousand, and your enemies shall fall before you by the sword.

^10 (A)One man of you puts to flight a thousand, since it is the Lord your God ^(B)who fights for you, just as he promised you.

⁷ “The Lord ^(A)will cause your enemies who rise against you to be defeated before you. They shall come out against you one way and flee before you seven ways.

²⁰ Now Abishai, the brother of Joab, was chief of the thirty.^[a] And he wielded his spear against 300 men and killed them and won a name beside the three.

¹¹ This is an account of David's mighty men: ^(A)Jashobeam, a ^(B)Hachmonite, was ^(C)chief of the three.^[a] He wielded his spear against 300 whom he killed at one time.

⁴⁵ Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with ^(A)a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, ^(B)whom you have defied. ⁴⁶ This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head. ^(C)And I will give the dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day ^(D)to the birds of the air and to the wild beasts of the earth, ^(E)that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, ⁴⁷ and that all this assembly may know that ^(F)the Lord saves not with sword and spear. ^(G)For the battle is the Lord's, and he will give you into our hand.”

⁴⁸ When the Philistine arose and came and drew near to meet David, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet the Philistine. ⁴⁹ And David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone and slung it and struck the Philistine on his forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the ground.

⁵⁰ So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him. There was no sword in the hand of David. ⁵¹ Then David ran and stood over the Philistine ^(H)and took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him and cut off his head with it. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, ^(I)they fled. ⁵² And the men of Israel and Judah rose with a shout and pursued the Philistines as far as Gath^[a] and the gates of ^(J)Ekron, so that the wounded Philistines fell on the way from ^(K)Shaaraim as far as ^(L)Gath and Ekron.

Gideon Defeats Midian

¹⁹ So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the outskirts of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, when they had just set the watch. And they blew the trumpets and smashed the jars that were in their hands. ²⁰ Then the three companies blew the trumpets and broke the jars. They held in their left hands the torches, and in their right hands the trumpets to blow. ^(A)And they cried out, “A sword for the Lord and for Gideon!” ²¹ Every man stood in his place around the camp, ^(B)and all the army ran. They cried out and fled.

⁹ Only ^(A)do not rebel against the Lord. And ^(B)do not fear the people of the land, for ^(C)they are bread for us. Their protection is removed from them, and the Lord is with us; do not fear them.”
