² he has driven and brought me
    into darkness without any light;

²⁶ But when I looked for good, evil came,
    and when I waited for light, darkness came.^(A)

¹⁸ Woe to you who desire the day of the Lord!
    Why do you want the day of the Lord?
It is darkness, not light,^(A)
19     as if someone fled from a lion
    and was met by a bear
or went into the house and rested a hand against the wall
    and was bitten by a snake.^(B)
20 Is not the day of the Lord darkness, not light,
    and gloom with no brightness in it?^(C)

⁵³ they flung me alive into a pit
    and hurled stones on me;^(A)
54 water closed over my head;
    I said, “I am lost.”^(B)

2 How the Lord in his anger
    has humiliated^[a] daughter Zion!
He has thrown down from heaven to earth
    the splendor of Israel;
he has not remembered his footstool
    in the day of his anger.^(A)

¹⁶ Give glory to the Lord your God
    before he brings darkness
and before your feet stumble
    on the mountains at twilight;
while you look for light,
    he turns it into gloom
    and makes it deep darkness.^(A)
